[new interview] Civilization Online: MMO/real-time

I don't know how to feel about this. It takes the iconic Turn-based strategy out of Civ, something I fell in love with: have yet to find another strategy game implementing turn-based so well.

And, people who seek to get introduced into the Civ series by playing this MMO, will get something totally different when they actually start playing Civ 5 or 4.

Alright, a chance to found a communist empire without the CIA assassinating or couping the democratically elected socialist party out of power!

considering it's being developed by a third party (XLGames) as opposed to Firaxis, it might be a stretch to say 2K is "throwing money" at this instead of working on the "canon" Civ franchise. my guess is that the game is primarily intended for release in Korea for now, where there is a considerable MMORPG user base (also leveraging XLgames' renown for Archeage and Lineage). At the same time I suppose it wouldn't hurt to draw more "traditional" civ users into the MMO scene (and vice versa), if it's possible.

looks interesting enough for me either way

I *so* want to be a worker. Build a farm today, a mine tomorrow, and a railroad the next day. Woohoo.

So Civilization on Facebook and now this? I seriously hope it will get canceled. But it probably will not. Oh well another low population mmo on the market. I know I'm being cynical here, but given how much this differs from a regular Civ gameplay, I don't think many Civ players will just switch into it. And folk who usually playing mmo games, will give it a go for 1 or 2 months and quit afterward. It's happening to almost every mmo on the market.

What about people who were playing since Civ 1? :)
