UU&UB or UU&UU elimination thread

I'll double check when I'm not at work (being a ficticious prince is HARD!) but I would say that still doesn't make up for the celts inability to defend from horsies, even if it is true, and free pillage ain't worth much when you can only move two.

Just to bring it all together:

"It has a combat bonus outside of friendly territory (Foreign Land Bonus 20%) and can pillage enemy improvements at no additional movement cost. Earns 50% of opponents' strength as Faith for kills."

And I don't know, I slightly disagree that they are a weak early game unit. And if you sense a horsie threat coming then if you can hold them off then pikeman isn't so far away. Other than the faith bonus, at least they retain their bonuses - the 20% outside of friendly territory is no slouch - which can't be said for every unit.

Even though I don't think they are weak, I actually don't like using them. I would have preferred a pictish warrior replacing the warrior or even swordsman.

Norwegian Ski Infantry:

A fan of Denmark, help me out, because I've only played them once or twice over the years.

"In Snow, Tundra, Hills: +25% Combat Bonus
(if Forest or Jungle is not present) and Double Movement."

Does this include any hills? As in hills without tundra?

Probably both snow, tundra and any hills

+China: Cho-Ko-Nu can be highly promoted early and are able to retain its promotions upon upgrades. Paper maker is awesome. Early extra gold helps a lot.

-Babylon: Wall UB are terrible. You probably won't build them in most of your cities. Bowmen have a rather short life-span because CB can quickly replace them.

France: two great units on the same upgrade path right after your ability times out? Feels like christmas.

Egypt: yet again, a building that increases the need for efficient defense and a unit designed for quick attack? What's the dealio?

Inca: Slingers are a decent early game unit but they are the least appealing aspect of the this entire civ. I don't see why it was necessary to give them less combat strength than the archer but even if it had the same strength I'm not a big risk taker so I can't appreciate the withdraw perk. Terrace farm is fine. It's hard for me to say negative things about the UU/UB/UI combos, I kind of like them all in their own ways.

Maya: Pyramid alone makes this civ better than most. The atlatlist is a far more appealing early archer unit than any of its counterparts simply because you don't have to research archery and can crank them out quickly without losing ground on other buildings you want to build.

Persia: The Immortal isn't the greatest UU, granted, but I absolutely love the economic power of Satrap's Court. The happiness boost can help a ton - especially if you're building wide and you don't want to take any maintenance hit for Colosseums/haven't the access for Circuses.

Egypt: Just no love for this combination. Chariot Archers, for me, are pretty obsolete, and as people have stated already, the Burial Tomb has great upsides but just makes you/Ramesses more appetising for picking off in the early game.

Honestly, the crappy UU, the wonder-hoarding UA, and the Bonus looting form UB makes Egypt an appetising target for every minute, every day, every year.

Too true. Though to date, I struggle to remember ever coming up against a truly formidable Ramesses, a wonder-hoarder like he's supposed to be. Wonder why.

+Spain: I like all horse UUs that don't have penalty vs cities because they can escape from the city range after attacking it. On top of that, conquistadors have +2 sight, defensive embarkation and city settling ability. Those abilities are all very useful, and they also make conquistador a nice complement for seven cities of gold. Tercios dominate renaissance battle field. The main treats of musketmen are always knights and lancers but tercios eat them like breakfast.

-Russia: bonus versus injured units is nice but cavalries are generally too weak to do anything because of Gatling Guns. Krepost isn't great too. Barracks are not necessary to be built in every city.

Not to be that guy but "they also make conquistador a nice compliment for seven cities of gold."

However tempting it is to talk about the UA, let's keep it focused on the UU/UBs only, since this is what the thread is about

Even if you voted without the UA in mind: This is a reminder for everyone to try to not to let your experiences with a civ as a whole persuade you into voting for the civ. One or two people have done that already. Just sayin'

Korea: Same reasons as before. Both UU are downgrades compared to their normal counterparts, and are only good for defense, which really doesn't help them.

Mongolia: The only UGP in the game so far, the Khan is an awesome GP and really helps the mongolian horsies. And the Keshiks..... simply awesome. The ability to attack a city and units with them and get far away is simply awesome. The hit and run ability is awesome, and together, the Keshiks and the Khan make Mongolia one of the most powerful mid-game threats

Inca: yet again, the terrace farm is what seals the deal. It has awesome powers, and makes your city both productive AND large very early (early on you usually have to choose). Slingers get powerful when you upgrade them.

Austria: the Hussar is an inferior cossack that requires a lot more effort and spare units to get its ability going. The coffee house comes when great people are needed least and is WEAKER than the windmill.

+England: It has the best UUs in the game. Lbm are medieval artilleries and the powerful promotion can be carried on when they become Gatling guns or machine guns. Ship of the Lines are stronger AND cheaper. Ranged navy is always useful in a game.

-Polynesia: Maori Warriors are pretty useless since the 10% bonus is not enough to support an early warrior rush. Moai improvement also sucks. If you want to get a higher culture with Moai, you need to build lots of them, which means you'll have no spaces to build other improvements.

Germany: the landskencht is very nice and gives you decent defense for a VERY long time (late renniassance) and the Panzer makes my airborne flank tactics a truly brutal tactic, and allow me to crush any opposition before knocking a city to bits.

Huns. These units have such a short expiration date and can be countered so easily that it really doesn't matter how good they are in the first 40-60 turns.
