9.0.1 We are a Backwards people. Population increased by 133,000.
+2 Settlers, +1 Warrior, +2 Spears, +3 Swords, +2 Cats, -1 Army :(, -1 A/C :(
-1 Greek city :D

That's bad luck with the AC army, but let's make sure we have 3 units in the army next time.

Without Thermopylae, I think the Greeks will be ironless unless they can hook up the northern iron, which they should not be able to do. They do have horses, so watch out for horsemen.

Ah, you're right. I wrote that I joined the A/C with the ACA, but I hadn't loaded it. Bummer.

Too bad about the ACA. I've never actually had one in a game play (and I guess I still won't! :D). But it looks like our land development is starting to move along and we've got twice the number of cities as thirty turns before, so that's definately a move in the right direction!

I'd feel better with a second source of iron. The one by Barc is just to vulnerable to invasion and culture. :sad: But destroying Greece will give us some nice iron deposits. We should make sure to hook one up ASAP.

I think this is where we are at:

Very nice! Looks like I get to play with an AC army after all! I've got the save.

And I made it fully loaded too. On a hill in a town, even a regular hoplite defends like a musket, so the previous ones loss is understandable. Have fun drubbing on our prostrate foe!

Will do. I see we are 1 turn from republic. :eek: That will be a tough storm to weather but it will make destroying Greece all the more sweet . . .

Turn 140 (250AD)

Preflight

Take a look around at diplo. Looks like just about everyone is up on us for techs except for Arabia – they have currency but not republic. Hopefully we can leverage that next turn. We are strong to everyone, so that’s good.

Our core is much improved and we have 12 cities, which is a huge improvement over last time! :D

Mayan: 9 cities
Babs: 8 cities
China: 3 cities
Dutch: 8 cities
Hittites: 8 cities
Arabia: 6 cities

Not to shabby even if several of our cities are only size 1 or in resistance. :)

I’m not inclined to change anything. Hit enter.

IBT – Greek archer retreats from sword on iron source. Another archer steps out of Pharsalos – guess he doesn’t want to die with the hoplite.
We kick a bunch of Spartans into the pit of death; Sparta is now size 3 on short rations.
Hittites start building the AoW.

Turn 141 (260AD)

We pick up Republic. I order that our people descend into anarchy while we start currency. We are now a nation of whiny jerks. Madrid riots; other cities riots are headed off, not that it much matters.

Battle for Pharsalos – cats go 1/6 and harm a single hoplite to 2/3. Its time for our swords to earn their pay. 13/13 GSA vs 3/3 hoplite – a cat defensive take a point and then the hoplite takes us to 9/13. 9/13 GSA vs 2/3 hoplite – win, down to 7/13 and capture city, cat & 2 workers. 5 resisters. Start a worker. Greek cat fires on retreating archer and misses. 5/5 AC vs 3/3 archer – clean kill.

Park everyone in Pharsalos to help quell some resisters.

IBT – Greece advances an archer and a MDI towards Sparta.
Sparta starves to size 2.

Turn 142 (270AD)

We are a Republic. We need luxury of a 40% to keep Seville happy. Swap from a sword to a settler.
Trade Arabia Republic for Currency & 1gp.
Start Feud, even at 10% science we are at -33gpt. I rush a settler at Seville for 72gp so we can drop the lux rate.

15/15 2nd Cav vs 3/3 MDI – win, -2hp but promote elite. 14/16 2nd Cav vs 3/3 archer – win, -1hp. 5/5 AC vs 3/3 archer – win, -1hp.

Swap Murcia to a barracks.

IBT – no movement by the Greek.
Dutch warrior is moving around the Greek wasteland.
Dutch are building KT :mad:

Turn 143 (280AD)

Barc: Sword=>Sword & cultural boarders expand – but we don’t get our iron back. :sad:
Seville: Settler=>Sword
Pharsalos riots, make scientists.

Drop science to 30%.
Build Pamplona. Start a worker.
Shuffle units.

IBT – 2 greek archers advance from their northern holdings.

Turn 144 (290AD)

Resistance in Sparta ends.
Madrid: AC
Argos: Cat=>Library
Salamanca: Barracks=>Sword

Move units on Knossos and uncover the city and silks!
Advance stack on Knossos and Athens.

IBT – Greece advances an archer on Sparta.

Turn 145 (300AD)

Miss a riot at Sparta – make taxmen.
Resistance ends at Pharsalos; city starves to size 3.

5/5 AC vs 3/3 archer – win -2hp.
Move archer to give the Grand Spear a defensive shot at incoming archer.

IBT – Mayans are building Sistines & KT. :sad:
Greek advance archer on Pamplona.
Greek archer by Seville retreats (away from grand spear backed by archer).

Turn 146 (310AD)

Sparta starves to size 1.
Pharsalos starves to size 2.

Battle for Athens: Cats go 3/7 and reveal 3 vet hoplites. This is going to suck. The city is size 3. 16/16 2nd Cav vs 3/4 hoplite – dodges a defensive shot and cleanly kills the hoplite. So far so good. 16/16 2nd Cav vs 3/4 hoplite – win, -1hp. Wow. 15/16 2nd Cav vs 3/4 hoplite – win, -2hp. 13/13 GSA vs 3/3 archer – clean win, capture city. City size 2, 2 resisters. Start a worker.

Horse are connected by Sparta.
Battle for Knossos – 5/5 AC vs 3/3 Hoplite – win, -2hp. 5/5 AC vs 3/3 hoplite – win, -1hp. 4/4 sword vs 3/3 archer – clean kill, promote elite. Capture city, 6 slaves :eek: and silks! Start a cat.

Drop lux to 20%, now at -2gpt.
Swap Zaragoza to a barracks.

IBT – 3/3 archer attacks a 4/4 spear in Pamplona, wins with -1hp. Promotes vet.
Dutch are building Sistines.

Turn 147 (320AD)

Valencia: Spear=>Sword
Santiago: Sword=>Library

4/4 sword vs 3/4 archer – lose, redline archer. 4/4 sword finishes him off.

Advance on Corinth, the new Greek capital city.

IBT - zzz

Turn 148 (330AD)

Madrid: Library=>Market
Resistance in Athens ends.
Toledo: Sword=>Sword

Battle for Corinth: cats go 4/7, reveal 3 hoplites now 2/4, 2/3, 2/3. 13/16 2nd Cav vs 2/4 Hoplite – win, -4hp. 9/16 2nd Cav vs 2/3 hoplite – win, - 1hp. 8/16 2nd Cav vs 2/3 hoplite – flawless win. Capture city & 1 cat. Start a worker. Size 2, 1 resister.

Mycene is now the new capital.
Swap Athens to a Cat and starve the city.

5/5 AC out of Knossos vs 3/3 archer – flawless win.

IBT – See Dutch knight. :sad:
Babs are building Sistines & KT.

Turn 149 (340AD)

Madrid: AC
Barc: Sword=>Sword

Units are advanced on the last two Greek cities.

IBT -

Turn 150 (350AD)

Resistance ends in Corinth. Corinth riots. Make some scientists. Swap to Cat.
Pamplona: Worker=>Cat

Decide that the cities are less important than ending the war with Greece.

Battle for Mycenae – 13/13 GSA vs 3/3 hoplite – win, -4hp after defensive cat shot. 9/13 GSA vs 3/3 hoplite – win, -1hp. Destroy city. Capture cat & 1 slave.

Battle for Herakleia – 5/5 AC vs 4/4 hoplite – win, -redline, promote elite. 4/4 sword vs 3/3 hoplite – lose, -1hp. 4/4 sword vs 2/3 hoplite – win, -2hp. Destroy city, capture 1 slave.

Greece is destroyed. :woohoo:

Lux to 10%, put people back to work. Science to 20%, Feud in 10t @ -2gpt.

We need to DOW on Babs. Dial up Hammurabi. He’s a bit annoyed with us for put up a road and a mine on his source of iron. He’s even more annoyed when we DOW on him.

And off we go!

As a reminder, now that we are war with the Babylonians, China is up next followed by the Mayans.

We have a settler over by the last two destroyed Greek cities to fill in some land. The Dutch have a curragh mapping the old Greek coast. Cats are in route to the battle front but with all the hills it will be hard for them to get into action.

We are trailing in techs but we now have twice the number of cities of the next largest civ and we still have room to grow into our newly conquered territory if the AI doesn’t beat us to it. Our armies are making short work of city defenders. Conquering the babs will also give us gems and wine. :D

That's bad luck with the AC army, but let's make sure we have 3 units in the army next time.

it was said already, but really there is no especial bad luck involved here. a 10/10 2-unit ACav-army really should not attack a fortified hoplite on a hill, the odds are not too good. even with a third unit in that army (i understood it was mistakenly not fully loaded, well that paid bitter) i probably would not let it attack all alone, because it very probably will be highly damaged even if it wins.

good you got rid of the Greeks later (Europa is still working on that! :D).

i am sure it was mentioned somewhere, but why on earth are you changing into a Republic? i think a Monarchy was just fine for your variant, and it cost you a fortune of research beakers which i fear you will never get back from another revolution.

We agreed in the set up of the game (OP) to play as a Republic in a NOW game. :) Playing in Monarchy would just be too easy! Or we just like torturing ourselves. :dunno:

I think a Monarchy is too easy, which is why Republic, more challenging. As it is, I think we are on the cusp of a romp, getting Maces and Pikes will make things even easier. As we gain land and grow, our unit costs should shrink, as inland cities need no defenders. Also, no MP's means no troops sitting there just keeping cities happy. Then there are luxes that we can capture too. With efficient warfare, we can win before 1500AD. In fact, that can be my challenge to the team: Let's win this before that date.

Right, I'm back. Sorry I disappeared like that, but I have a reasonable (personal) explanation. If you want to know, PM me.

I like the progress! And I agree with Overseer, let's get Republic.

Good to have you back! Good timing too. You can slip right back into the roster after CKS is done with his turn.

@Overseer - Winning by 1500AD give us 140 more turns to win? That seems very doable. :goodjob:

Turn 0 (350 AD)
Swap a few builds - mostly worker and catapult builds, so that we don't end up wasting shields while our population grows enough to build a worker. Swap Madrid and Argos to settlers. Get Seville another shield so it builds a sword in 2 turns instead of 3. Things look pretty good with Greece gone. Advance on Babylon.
IBT: See a bowman. Madrid builds a settler, starts a marketplace. We get a palace expansion, which I don't build.

Turn 1:
Continue advancing.
IBT: Seville Sword to horse, Salamanca sword to settler.
Mayans show up on our doorstep. If they come farther, I'll see what I can pay them gpt for.

Turn 2:
Vet sword 3/4 kills bowman. 2/4 sword kills longbow. Continue advancing. 5/5 AC dies redlining reg. bowman. E* archer kills bowman. Spears cover. Build Vitona.
IBT: Longbow shows up, redlines killing our spear. Knight kills spear near Akkad. Lots of Mayans around, but they don't exactly advance.

Turn 3:
Kill longbow. Advance on Akkad and Uruk. Do nothing with Mayans; I think that they are in a situation where they will advance before declaring.
IBT: Mayans advance. Warrior suicides promoting our sword to elite. Pikemen coming to Uruk pass through it.

Turn 4:
Trade Mayans 78 gpt for Monotheism and Engineering. Ask them to leave, and they declare.
Near Barcelona: Bombard with cats. Vet sword redlines killing longbow. Vet sword dies to longbow.
Near Uruk: Vet ACs are perfect killing 2 pikes. 2/4 sword kills longbow to take town. 2/4 sword kills bowman outside of town.
Near Toledo: Vet sword dies redlining Mayan pike. E sword finishes it off and we get a leader. :) It makes an army, which will get filled with AC. We can build the pentagon now.
IBT: Mayan forces scatter. Longbow kills exposed, redlined sword.

Turn 5:
Trade Engineering to Arabia for Feudalism. Start Chivalry, due in 10 turns.
Cats hit two wandering pikes, Sword army kills them. Load 2 AC into army. Move army to Barcelona. Barcelona AC redlines killing longbow, then joins army. E* sword kills javelin thrower. Vet sword redlines killing javelin thrower. 2/4 sword kills JT. 2/4 sword kills longbow. 3/4 archer kills longbow. Upgrade E* sword. First AC army kills Babylonian knight, longbow.
IBT: Nothing much.

Turn 6:
Build Santander. Heal and advance.
IBT: Dutch build Sin tzu's. Mayans appear to north.

Turn 7:
Advance. AC army kills longbow.
IBT: Nothing of interest.

Turn 8:
Bomb Akkad, AC armies kill 2 pikes and a bowman to take the city. Move around.
IBT: Nothing.

Turn 9:
AC armies kill three longbows on mountains. MDI dies redlining JT. Lose 2 swords turning it into a 2/5 JT with 2 workers. :( 4/5 sword kills redlined pike on mountain. 6/6 AC dies attacking redlined knight; sword army kills it.
IBT: Hittites build KT

Turn 10:
Build Asturias. Cut off Babylon's gems. Advance on Eridu. Leave some units with movement.

We are 4 turns from Chivalry. The Mayans have been mostly running back and forth; they have a galley off our eastern coast.

When we get another leader, we probably want a knight army. After that, though, we might consider the pentagon. 4AC armies are pretty nice, especially when we don't need to send them overseas.

Nice work on the army and getting our iron back! Also, excellent trade with the Mayans! What a steal! Do we want to delay some of the MDI builds to make them knights? Maybe swap them to buildings for the extra turn. Looks like a handful are due in 3 turns with knights at 4 turns. I'd rather have knights than MDI.

We also need to put up our FP somewhere.

Toxicman007 - the game is yours if you are ready to jump back in. We are gaining momentum! Just remember that China is next, then the Mayans. No offensive actions against the Mayan lands until it is their turn. It might be tricky because China is just a handful of cities in the middle of everything.

It also sounds like both the Babylonians and Mayans are now in their GA.

We agreed in the set up of the game (OP) to play as a Republic in a NOW game. :) Playing in Monarchy would just be too easy! Or we just like torturing ourselves. :dunno:

i see. both are very good reasons!
