How close do you build your cities to one another?

San Francisco, baby!
When playing Civ3, I usually build my cities so that their initial boundries just touch one another, unless there's a great resource or place to build further away. I'm wondering if other people do this, or perhaps some other strategy for placing cities...

depends what map and if your aiming for a top score
archipelgio-close build possible ICS
continents- bit further apart
pangae-as far apart so that they will tough when the borders expand

five squares apart. you should have made this a poll.

Five is optimal; sometimes six depending on the terrain and my goals.

I usually put them connecting each other.Occasionally I'll space them if an opponent is about to get an important square that I want.
