Tomatekh's New Civilizations

Well, ok, as you said, if it isn't vital then you can wait and see if someone volunteers. As is too unfair to ask janboruta to do all the icons for the mods. I'm not THAT skilled drawer, but if I manage to, by some miracle, do a good icon I'll post it.

About the Brazil mod: ok, don't worry, you're always helping us, so, wait a week more for something that no one more would do, and that you volunteered to do isn't a problem for me.

Here's a quick icon for the bloomery I just threw together.. I'm still working on how to make more professional looking buttons (I think I got the flag/symbol stuff down though :D)
If you'd like to use it, at least until someone makes a better looking one, I'll convert it to DDS or you can do so yourself..

Thanks for adding many new unique civilizations. I have a question, can you create the Chola civilization? Chola was a small tamil kingdom in South India that later developed under the rule of Rajendra Chola I to a mighty overseas empire. It would be great if you can. :D

Here are some infos about the Chola empire.

Leader: Rajendra Chola I

I have a few civs on my list at the moment. I'll definitely look into the Chola once I work through them, though.

Nice touch adding the Zambezi in :goodjob:

@janboruta: I would imagine there will still be 'Great Zimbabwe at the time of...', as well as a key given the colours, so I think the scale should be fine. Not sure though.

Maybe add in a couple Zimbabwean / Rhodesian postage stamps too?

Both maps look amazing!

I had a bunch of problems with the Zimbabwe map. First, I couldn't, and still can't, find any accurate maps of the actual area of the Zimbabwe kingdoms, which is why the scale is off. The areas I ended up making were different from what I initially thought when I started the map. They're probably not even that accurate. I did the best I could looking up the major archeological sites and using them to make rough borders. Second, the map shows four kingdoms but only two are contemporaneous with each other; Mapungubwe was the predecessor of Great Zimbabwe which then split into Mutuapa and Butua. They all represent one cultural lineage, but on their own none of them really had the land area or known details to make their own map. So the map is going to say something like "Major Pre-Colonial Kingdoms of the Zimbabwe Plateau c. 1220-1720", which is a somewhat ridiculous 500 year span for a map. So I have to add arrows or a legend with dates or something. I also had trouble finding symbols to fill the map. The three I used are sort of the de-facto symbols of the three major kingdoms (golden rhino of Mapungubwe, the stone Zimbabwe bird, and the coat of arms of Mutuapa), but relatively simple on their own.

The Mali map also has a problem with scale, but it was somewhat intentional as I wanted to mirror the Songhai map which shows almost all of West Africa (the Songhai map also exaggerates Songhai's area a bit, but whatever). Then, after I decided on the gold Timbuktu astronomical charts, I also wanted to add more water into the image to stretch that effect. I actually think the two giant kanaga silhouettes I used are incredibly lazy, but I think it actually kind of works in the final image.

Both look really great :goodjob:

For Mali: maybe keep only one of the silhouettes? The Sahara is a pretty empty place after all, and with the text in the Atlantic (which I like), it's already quite a busy map.

The "occupied" region in the Zimbabwe map does look relatively small compared to others, but if you zoom in further it would take away the perspective of where in Africa it is located, so I'd say keep it like this. The labels will also take up considerable space I assume.

Why isn't the Hittites on Civfanatics? Your first post only lists a Steam download.

It'll be posted here in the near future once it's in a more final form. I'm still working some things out with the civ. On the workshop this is less of a problem as it will notify you of an update on the mod menu, but on civfanatics I prefer to post it when its more stable.

Oh, okay. I see your reasoning. :goodjob:

I was actually hoping for a central Asian civ since I made a map of central asia, so I'm glad to see it was already done :) I tried two games as the Timurids. The UA and UU didn't seem strong enough the first time around, so I tried altering the UA to +2 :c5culture: and +3 :c5science:. I went for a science victory, so I built the Great Library and National College while I has 2 cities. Samarqand was also next to a mountain so I also got to build an observatory.

In terms of balance, I figure that civs that have yield-increase UA's generally get about +5-10 :commerce: per city, so with the +175% modifier I had towards the end, it comes out to about +8.5 :c5science: per city, plus additional culture. The culture seemed to be appropriate though. I think using +2 :c5science: and +2 :c5culture: would work well.

I like the tumen, but I think the gold yield from combat should be higher. Also, I think it breaks the game if you don't get Holy Warriors. Maybe you could have them available for purchase with faith even without Holy Warriors?

Also, woot on the Almohads, another civ to go with a map I made :D

Hi Tomatekh

Your civilizations look fantastic (!) and I'm thinking about including some of them in my upcoming game. As I recall, however, you alter some lua files which I fear may conflict with other mods, e.g. GEM/CivUP.

Do you know if this is the case?

If so are there any of your civilizations that do not have this problem (Goths don't, do they?)?

Goths, Benin, Garamantes don't (though Benin will with the next update). The upcoming Zimbabwe and Mali won't either. It really is only a few lines added to the CityView and Civlopedia lua files in order to make dummy buildings invisible. When I have time next week, it should be really quick to make combined versions of the files that you can replace.

Great - looking forwards to it :)

Also, the edits made to the CityView.lua and CivilopediaScreen.lua files are for purely aesthetic reasons. For the time being, if you simply delete these two files from the mod folders the civs should be fully compatible. You'll just see the dummy buildings in your city and civlopedia.
