Honestly I think "Orthodox" is a fitting name, but doesn't cover all of the area.

"Balkan" and "Caucasus" have the same problem.

This is only a problem because it's the reason we're replacing "Slavic".

Yeah, Orthodox neglects to mention the fact that Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, etc. are mostly Catholic.
 
From what I've seen, you use one word as the "title" of the group, but then you have a three-word subtitle. So I would propose "Eastern" as opposed to "Western". This works in EU4: everything defaults to "European", so you have two tech groups there, Western and Eastern, and Eastern encompasses the Ottomans as well. There are more European groups in this mod here, so "Northern"/"Clan" and "Central" would have to be added. To be honest "Imperial" and "Continental" don't mean anything - even Russia fits both those adjectives :p But I get the meaning behind them. I agree about "Orthodox" - not because it excludes some civs, but because I think we agreed to steer clear of religious references - as the player can found any religion in game.

Subtitles:

"East of Rome"

"Walls of Europe"

"Bastion of Faith" (as you proposed)

"Squatting club"

What about a Font Icon next to the Leaders' name? something simple and minimal, not too exaggerated.

Icons from Tomatekh's Religion mod could fit many of the groups here - only Europe would need some new ones for Western, Central, Eastern and Colonial (catholic, protestant and orthodox crosses don't really apply to all of the civs within these groups I think). I could make symbols out of crowns of the nations from each group - i.e. Eastern group would get the Russian Imperial crown, western would get the British crown, central - the Imperial diadem of Ottonian dynasty, HRE - the Imperial crown etc. In fact, I could make such icons for all groups, but if using Tomatekhs's symbol would be appropriate and not against his will, it would save a lot of work.

So, which groups could use which icon:

Graeco - Roman: Hellenism
Clan: Druidism / Forn Sidr
Crescent: Islam
Bharata: Hindu
Mandala: Buddhism
Oriental: Confucianism
Japanese: Shinto
Oceanian: Manaism
African: Amatongo / Nzambiism
High American: Tlateomatiliztli
Tribal American: Hawenneyu / Pohakantenna
Steppe: Tengriism
Mesopotamian: Chaldeanism
Papal: Catholic cross / Papal tiara
 
And we make a flag for Colonial (I think there's even some flag fonticons unused within the core files)
 
I think that's an excellent proposition. I'll speak with Tomatekh about using what he's got. But if you could do those ones that would be precluded (the European ones, as you said), Jan, that would be great.
 
That was quick. And they're beautiful. I wonder if you could provide larger versions as well? I may find a place to use the regular 128x128 alphas (just in case, anyway).
 
Excellent. Down the line I'll want to make the UI more decorative and I think these icons will be core to this.
 
Heh, they look so very chess-like. 2 options for Colonial:



First one is laurels and stars; most Latin American states adopted such symbols at least once; but it wouldn't fit so much with America and Canada I think... The other one is more generic, a simple flag.
 
In terms of icons... I have founds something cool. Basically there are so nice icons here that even such artistically disabled man as me could do something acceptable from this site - of course I am pretty sure janboruta alone can create 10x more wonderful things :D but still, maybe something here can be useful? Also, you Civilisation Modders can find few interesting things here in terms of flag/icons ;).
