I started playing last night and got to -2000. I typically do not post till I build Marco and know the map but this is a known map. My hut luck has been amazing in this game and certainly unprecedented. It started very disappointingly by giving me Warrior Code from the first hut. But then it took off to unbelievable levels:
Advanced tribe (before I had a chance to make a size 1 settler), None archer, pottery (not good but who is complaining), Advanced tribe, archer, empty, 50g, chariot, 50g, nomad, currency (this was great because I was researching it then), archer, advanced tribe, archer, 4xempty, 50g, 2xarcher, 50g
In summary: 6 archers, 1 chariot, 3 techs (one desired, two not), 4x50g, 5xempty, 3 advanced tribes, and one nomad.

At -2000 I have 10 cities, 4 from huts.

Log follows

Date Notes

-4000 Americans are in the game. My tentative strategy is to either ally with them or conquer them and then go for space. Move one tile SE and build Little Bighorn on grass.
-3950 -> Alphabet.
-3800 Warrior produced. Size 1 settler started.
-3700 Alphabet -> Code of Laws.
-3650 Hut yields Warrior code.
-3550 Advanced tribe founds Wounded Knee at 221, 63. This is great but now I have to scrap the size 1 settler plan.
-3350 None archer from hut near Americans.
-3300 American warrior stops by Wounded Knee and offers Bronze for warrior code. I refuse. Sign peace.
-3200 First settler produced.
-3100 Code of Laws -> Ceremonial Burial. Pottery from hut; good thing I waited a turn before doing this. Cedar Creek founded between my two existing cities.

-2950 Advanced tribe founds Slim Buttes at the shore of Lake Erie (226, 54). I do not recall two advanced tribes this close to each other ever.
-2900 Archer from hut.
-2800 Empty hut.
-2700 50g from hut.
-2650 Three Forks founded.
-2550 Burial -> Bronze. Pottery, Laws -> American (1) -> Bronze, writing. Asked for tribute and the Americans gave me Writing which they had already traded. This extra nonsensical act counted as a tech acquisition and bumped the counter making Monarchy not a choice the next turn as well. Frustrating new discovery. Chariot from hut.
-2500 -> Currency. 50g and Nomad from huts.
-2450 Nomad builds Stony Lake.
-2400 Killdeer founded. Currency from hut.
-2350 -> Monarchy. Archer from hut. Bear Paw founded.
-2300 Advanced tribe founds Big Mound.
-2250 Archer from hut. Empty hut.
-2200 Empty hut
-2100 2xEmpty hut, 50g from hut.
-2050 Archer from hut.
-2000 Archer from hut. Wood Lake founded. 50g from hut.

Compared to yours, my hut luck was rather mediocre. I rather had gold and techs, some undesired, some very desired, especially monarchy one turn before oedo.

Initial thoughts: We will not go chasing respawns on this map, so it will be landing. Nice SSC-location at 107,53

I really would have liked to build Pyramids ourselves on this plainy terrain, but there was no chance to beat them to it.

My nephew asks about the computer game I play and I explain it was written a long time ago, is very well designed and has lots of replay value, doesn't depend on hand/eye, and is very robust. But this enormous map one (that'll be because it's Christmas) won't work in my normal version. So let's try in MGE, but don't be too surprised if a few things don't work so well.

Now nephew, there are normally a number of ways to play this. Just building one city (that never fails to surprise), or conquering without guns for example. But I'm not too sure about either of those in this case (OCC and MGE?), so we'll look to build and grow. Yes it's generally known that building cities as quickly as possible is the way to go, leaving improvements to later.

These huts we can see can give various outcomes, and I'm sure we'll get some good stuff, but you may hear me groan, especially when I learn something I don't want yet. What like hearing bad news he says! The general course will be OK, but how we fare in particular may depend a lot of luck, so cross your fingers, as we say in this country. We are aiming to become a monarchy.

Tell you what, despite building cities being the way to go, let's hold off building the first city, so any units we get from the huts are "free" of ongoing cost. I bet we get some units we keep right to the end of the game. And because this will be a long game we should have time to make up for not starting on cities straight away.

No monarchy yet and discoveries are expensive with so many learned already and so few cities, but we do have trade to help with wonders.

I evaluated 5 potential sites for science city (all map editor coordinates):
(111,49) 3 whales and wheat
(109,51) whale, 2 wheat, silk
(107,53) wheat, silk, 7 rivers
(102,45) wheat, silk, wine, 8 rivers
(108,64) 2 buffalo, 2 pheasant, 13 rivers

The difficult choice was between the third and the fourth one. Third is what Major picked; fourth was my first inclination. In the short term the fourth one is better as its arrows are concentrated but its growth will be slow. I eventually decided to go with 107,53 like Major and even named it Chicago!

-1950 T6L0S4 in preparation for Monarchy in -1850.
-1900 Dead Buffalo founded.
-1850 Monarchy -> Trade. T3L0S7. Feudalism, Nomad, and 50g from huts.
-1800 Chicago founded at 215, 53 with access to wheat, silk, and 7 rivers. It will be the science city.
-1750 Raging Brook founded.
-1700 Barbarian legion from hut kills my archer the next turn.
-1600 Running Bear and Silver Moon founded.
-1500 6 barbarians from hut will surely kill my chariot the next turn. Horseman and 50g from huts. Production in nearby city switched to diplomat.
-1450 Barbarian legion bribed for 82g to save my city. T7L0S3
-1400 Trade -> Mysticism. 50g from hut.
-1350 Legion survives barbarian horseman and turns vet.
-1300 Wildcat Valley founded. Advanced tribe founds Great River in central America. Nomad and Barbarian horseman from huts.
-1250 Archer survives barbarian legion. Nomad from hut. (Two nomads in as many turns! Is there something about this map or am I being uncharacteristically lucky with huts in this game?)
-1200 Seven Brothers founded.
-1150 Snake Canyon founded.
-1050 Mapmaking and Horseback riding from hut.
-1000 First Wind founded.

Same site for SSC - Little Bighorn in my case. Not the same experience with huts, but did get a lot of barbarian uprisings compared to usual.

1950-
1900-
1850- Found Three Forks.
1800- Sneak attack by Americans. Our archer becomes vet.
1750- Little Bighorn completes MPE. Peace, Iron, CB to Celts.
Spanish acquire Masonry.
1700-
1650- Miss discovery of monarchy as we become Mighty. French(6) give 150g for peace.
Babyls develop Pottery.
1600- Discover Monarchy -> Mysticism, as the French tribute makes us Supreme. We are poised on 8 huts...
Hut: Nomads. Hut: 50g. Hut: Republic. Hut: Barbs(horse). Hut: 50g. Hut:25g. Hut: Barbs(horse). Hut: 50g.
French do not want to swap techs.
Greeks swap Pottery and Wheel for Iron and CB, agree peace, and give 150g tribute.
Give Literacy to Babyls, make peace, then get Mysticism for Trade, and they give 150g.
Barbs appear in North-east. Horse lost to Barbs.
1550- French develop Republic.
1500- Revolution.

1450- Become Republic. Make peace with Americans. Hut: Legion (Three Forks).
Hut: Horse (Three Forks - so disband immed.)
1400- Hut: 50g. Give Republic, Pottery, Monarchy to Ams.

Two nomads in as many turns! Is there something about this map or am I being uncharacteristically lucky with huts in this game?
I guess if you play enough (which you do) you should get the odd fortunate streak with huts, even though it might feel so out of character. But, you can reassure yourself that to 1000BC although you had only popped 35 huts to my 49, you had unluckily got barbs the same number of times (twice) and weeds five times to my once.

I think these numbers are right, but as ever with counting from logs they may be slightly out, even if we all get our logs exactly correct.

Code:
                    Ali Ink Maj
Total 35 49 27
Tribes 7 2 3
Tech 6 11 7
Money 7 14 6
Unit 8 19 4
Weeds 5 1 4
Barbs 2 2 3

Of course tech discoveries are very far from equal. The Major got Monarchy from a hut 10 turns befoe I discovered it, which no doubt produced a loud cheer, but also Feudalism, which will have produced an even louder groan.

Having just completed a long build to a space ship, I will probably go for conquest (I guess it won't be EC) even though the map is huge. With almost all civs on the same continent, trade will be somewhat limited. Maybe the distance factor will help make up for the same continent penalty.

My Hut outcome was pretty good. Like Ali, I also got an Advanced Tribe before I could finish the size 1 settler. Warrior Code in -2300 wasn't great, but did not really affect the arrival of Monarchy. In the -2200 thru -2050 time period, I waited on a few huts to make sure Monarchy wasn't delayed. Then I hit the trifecta getting Writing, Currency and Trade in 2050.

I played without to see the posts:)),good sites and others, more mistakes, because I played last time Civ II in 2010 I think, more Civ IV BTS,more times I press insert to go in a city, must F1:).
Is 1540 AD,Americans destroyed more turns before, more troops lost, city walls destroyed with big efforts in Washington, more diplomats lost,2 cities revolt, but with more gold,I have barracks and city wall in the last city,Boston.
Wonders:
Gardens lost, big mistake,Lighthouse lost, but I think not need more navy.
Great Library(hurried with more gold and a troop disbanded in the last turns,Babylonians too making the wonder),Pyramids,Colossus in Little Bighorn,Marco Polo's embassy,Copernicus ob,Leonardo workshop,Sun Tzu w.a,and SURE:)) Michelangelo and now Statue of Liberty.
Revolution, communism, now expanding, must erase forests to make cities in good places, etc
Maybe I will loose the map space race,I will see.
Good luck all !

Glad to see you are playing. Why did you want Great Library particularly when you have Marco? The library offers little advantage overall and less so when you already have Marco. I always share Literacy with rivals to entice them to switch away from wonders I want to Great Library which they love.

I like to make wonders, and can't play perfect after a pause 3-4 years maybe, too in Civ IV BTS loose maps for too much wonders.
But,in this case, the difficulty is emperor, not deity,I understand is a very huge map.In my country is an aphorism, proverb :'What is in hand not a lie',not sure sub OK.I don't know what kind of map is,can't risk, all my advanced tech to be stolen by GL.Have Marco Polo, but AI not always accept the offer.

During the next segment, I tried to concentrate on expansion. Huts were ok, but several Barb huts were encountered (and I immediately got huts full of barbs, no single barbs for me). Also Feudalism in -1300 was not a good surprise.
I got a little tribute from the Americans and I think I found Philadelphia on the turn after it was founded. Even though it was pretty close to Washington, it was cheap.

There is something about this map. 3 of the 6 Celtic cities are deep in central Russia and all 3 are at a hut location. Babylonian empire is two disjoint pieces: 2 cities in their homeland, and the other 3 in Pakistan and northern India. Just about everyone else has at least one city that is likely founded by an advanced tribe or nomad.

I don't know to make this, with more details, maybe I will learn, and sorry for bad english..
I quit sometime the game for a little Civ 4 BTS :) but too against AI.I said, more time lost without studying the map with editor, permitted, but the fun is important...

1942 AD
In my game was a turning point more more turns ago in Spain, then in map all without Celts and Americans,a big big mistake,no attention or tired, space not occupied, sure enemy spies, french and spanish, tech stolen, more allied against me, just with Chinese peace and Babylonians, quick changing tech, revolt in a city ..in revolt with my 50 % howitzers, etc,my luck no howitzers attack, red and yellow more,AI ...waiting,and a spy to re-incite revolt,my howitzers and other good troops back.

Now,me,Babylonians and Chinese on the map,Babylonians can be conquered now(can be 'reasonable' few turns ago,but waiting to make all railroads ,for howitzers and the next trade).
3 cities now Babylonians,Uruk(57,77) new capital, size 18,disorder,have SAM battery, few turn ago they mobile warfare researched,no police station, democratic president Ishtari did not police stations in cities, airport in production,3 turns,3 trade routes now with my cities,a freight from a little city in Alaska with airport(167,33) in Uruk,hides,74 gold:),Kish(34,48) too 3 trade routes with my cities more turns ago,no garrison, howitzers in fortress(32,44) attacks, because tries to make 'bad things' after alpine, fighter, tank, not airport like Uruk:).Maybe I will keep Kish for trade by 2019,I will wait to see if Uruk completes airport, can change for spy or bomber,etc.Larsa(53,63) will be erased next turn, bad placed, founded previous turn city in (56,64),2 pheasant, gold, river.Too,Boston, the last city of Americans bribed(212,76)was erased with efforts and settlers lost, now (213,77) Snake Canyon to have whale, now spice(216,78),desert oil (210,76).2 engineers irrigation in swamp preparing New Alexandria(21,77).An engineer swamp irrigation in South America(247,45),3 bananas and wine.
Chinese 4 cities,were 5,a 'strange' city in (40,110),Xinjian,revolt 100 gold more time ago,just size 1 then,need to keep.
Sure 4 AEGIS and a battleship in the range of missiles to have they an occupation ,'we should build a cruise missile':)),now position changed to Xinjian, escort for transports,in 3,4 turns all troups I think will be ready to go to Chinese territories from Australia...
Sure climate changed,90 % my fault,novice...,and too hurried,jungle,desert,swamp....,more engineers irrigations in new bad tiles and transform terrain,a former city of the Babylonians,Nippur(28,48) now placed in swamp with spices, not too bad...but Cardiff(sea port) and other placed now in swamp:(.
Tanks, alpines, spies and partisans, fanatics, riflemen bribed cleans the huts,in Africa just 2 huts to take now, next turn cleaned all,a city founded recently in (13,183),plains river, wheat, whale, wine, with the help of the airport from Xinjian and transports.South America,Alaska cleaned,Siberia partially,I wait for the next rich russian huts and territories.More new cities founded recently in good places near Babylonians, aprox 2,3,4 cities in a turn.In a huge map Civ 2 played more time ago I 'learned' this, max 144 cities can be founded,in this 'unusually' map too,144?
More mistakes, troops lost for nothing, mouse jump or forgetting that must be in a city in this turn, planes without fuel:)),2 bombers,a fighter, old fighter this turn for an idiot thing near Uruk, inoffensive marines sabotaged in a mountain (54,76) lost, shields wasted...
Communism,I will try maybe a short revolution to fundamentalism to make money after 10-25 turns,I prepare this, courthouse all, etc(I hope to be just a turn..),I have a bad experience with Stalin in WW II map(GOTM 159),no engineers lost, after this if most troops OK in garrissons democracy.
Tech all,future tech 2 now,8 turns discoveries,taxes 70-10-20,income 2375/cost 975.
Wonders all, without Manhattan, sure, nuclear devices not necesarry and can't risk to receive a nuke.

113 engineers,1 fanatics,4 partisans bribed,72 alpine,1 marines(ex-french,bribed Paris),4 paratroopers(1 lost too for nothing,to be veteran from a hard combat with a Babylonian partisan :(,8 mech infantry,4 cavalry from 'horde of barbarians' in huts and cities bribed,29 tanks,23 howitzer,8 fighter,10 bomber,1 helicopter(just for fun...'we should build a mobile attack force of Helicopters...' :)),6 stealth fighter,4 stealth bomber,1 destroyer(going to chinese island in a little exploration),5 AEGIS,2 battleship,2 carrier,15 transport,13 spy,1 freight(16 in production).Transports carry mercenaries to new small cities for disband.
Casualties:5 engineers,2 legion,2 musketeers,2 alpine,4 riflemen,1 paratroopers(I cry for this...,they nice troops),6 horsemen,7 chariot,5 elephant,5 crusaders,1 dragoons,1 cavalry,3 armor,2 howitzer,5 fighter(+1 fuel...),2 bomber(+2 fuel..),2 Stealth Fighter,1 caravel,3 ironclad,2 destroyer,3 transport,4 spy,3 explorer.
My spaceship partially,20 structural etc,I will launch in 2000 years, shields too wasted just for fun,I will take the last Babylonian city in 2019.
Good luck and more fun all ! :)

1944 AD -begin,no moves
I will keep the last babylonian city for trade Kish(34,48),Uruk not airport, engineers, size 20 is OK,hungry now,but my engineers irrigations and farms for this city, now one engi in (32,46),wheat,fortress, farmland this turn finished.Direction: navies to Chinese, just 4 cities,Tsingtao sea port(109,195),Shanghai(114,192),Beijing(117,182),Canton capital(117,179),I will see if make new cities,Apollo.Samarra(38,80) transport this turn, tanks, spies, engineers, etc from the 'Babylonian war' :) will carry,Xinjian ex-chinese(40,110) have airport, some troops and engineers for colonization in the Chinese continent,Australia..Other option a small island with airport,(217,131),a battleship and one AEGIS garrison and transports aligned for 'the passage' (222,114),city here.
Wu Zhao consul, republic, this turn researched automobile, maybe I will meet a battleship, have too combustion and electricity, but now research chivalry, funny:).I will make a city maybe in (97,165),fish and buffalo,53 hexes distance,8-12 turns to come.Treasury weak,in the end of turns always aprox 0,hurry productions markets, banks, freights, engi, etc. Can't risk a revolution, every engineer is important, not enough courth, colloseum, garissons, etc, maybe is a mistake.Trade increased, but not enoughhhhhh gold:(.

on the watch for Americans to break peace so I can conquer Washington and hopefully get a respawn in Australia.
Good Luck with that. I am well into the game. I have eliminated the Americans (Persians respawn in China), Spanish (Egyptians respawn in West Central Africa), French (Germans respawn in South America, probably Argentina, I found that amusing), and Germans (Vikings in Eastern Africa). I just eliminated the Babylonians, but haven't contacted the Japanese (I usually wait for their capital to be built).

BTW:
I looked (through exchange of maps) at all the respawned capitals within a turn or 2 of their founding. In all cases, there is a visible Settler outside the city, a garrison flag in the city and the 6 squares immediatley surrounding the city are irrigated if possible (including hills).
Persepolis size 3, Thebes and Berlin size 5, Trondheim size 7.
