So it seems that AIs on another continent cant do anything to you? They are happy to just sit and let me tech to an easy victory...admitted im only playing on king at the moment but they cant seem to figure out how to launch an invasion across the ocean.

That depends on the civ and several other factors. Peaceful civs will generally sit there and try to beat you at science or any other peaceful victory conditions. Warring civs are more likely to decide to attack you, but that depends on many factors including how much they hate you and how much they are in need of expansions (and your territories are the only option).

Even then the AI is notoriously bad at naval warfare and that's why island maps tend to be a lot easier to play. You just need to keep a lookout and have a moderate naval and you'll probably slaughter the incoming army before they can reach your coasts.

On emporer, you will start to find runaway civs on other continents, especially civs like Rome/Inca which have domiantion flavours, but also science/culture flavours so they are able to build up then attack, not be a early rusher like the axetecs and fall behind.

the AIs do initiate intercontinental war sometimes, but if you have a moderate navy/air force, it is barely a threat. I think the reason easy wins like that happens is because while us as players feel the need to keep AIs in check, and make sure none run away with the game, the AIs don't feel threatened by other players getting close to a win.

I rarely see the AI commit to intercontinental wars. Save for the caravels that roam the map.

The AI tends to make big decisions with this even when they do attack overseas.
Some will send a large embarked force but only one escort so you can slaughter their invasion force at sea.
Others will send a large naval force with one embarked unit attached (this is the why did they bother with that one land unit at all)

Note that the AI isn't that good making a invasion even if there is no ocean to cross either.

Have any of you experienced the AI being successful in an overseas invasion?

I have experienced Naval Attacks and Amphibious Landings occasionally. Most AI's prefer to wage War as close to home as possible, so if you are far away you are usually not their first choice for Conquest.

I actually had more cities lost to AI naval armies than land ones. That being said either event is very rare, but the lack of choke points makes it easier and faster for the AI to conquer a city when they have a large force.
Even so most of those cases happened when the enemy territory was very close to the conquered city and never in more than 2 turns of fighting (only on the sea the AI can be so fast).

While I enjoy Continents maps, I think this is a good argument for playing on a Pangaea.

The problem with pangae is that you have very limited sea resources/trade routes/etc availabl. Plus you can just turtle and stop any invasion with ease, its just harder/more annoying.

I'm playing a game as the Aztecs, Emperor, on Continents with Rome to the south, Babylon to the north, and Ottomans on the other continent (to just mention the relevant civs for this post). Rome expanded like wildfire early game and took away any potential for me to expand and have a coastal city. I did early war with them with the intent of razing and reclaiming my coastal territory, but I ended up settling for peace and taking a much stronger food/science city (lots of jungle tiles right as I was building Universities).

All of that about Rome to say that I don't have ANY naval units. Hindsight, I probably should have razed their coastal city then sued for peace, but whatever. Now I'm at war with Babylon and I've dedicated most of my army to taking their capital. The Ottomans, who have the largest army in the game currently, declared war on me. Astonishingly, I have actually seen 1 unit of theirs on my continent. Luckily for me, and perhaps unfortunately for Suleiman, if he wanted to embark all his units and land on my continent, I wouldn't be able to do anything about it at this point. First time I've seen the AI sail the ocean to attack.

As if the AI will ever commit to a full scale invasion.

Hiawatha of Gods n Kings did once against me.

He lost hundreds of ships XD But I lost as much as well.. Sea invasion ended in stalemate for both of us.

Well William (dutch) did invade me by sea in last immortal game. He come with huge land army and did naval invasion same time (Naval invasion consisted of 2 screens of ships, mostly destroyers.

Map was pangea. Licky I was playing ottoman, so even if my original fleet was 4 destroyed and 2 subs I won

I rarely see AI mount successful invasions across sea, they dont have issues with the coastal cities, but when it comes to landing troops they simply can't do it.

I saw an Byzantine invasion fleet heading to one of my coastal cities once. I got paranoid and started building a bunch of units to defend. All that work for nothing....

That's because its very rare for teh AI to decide to launch an sea invasion in force, they only bring enough forces for like 1-2 cities and if you muster enough defence then they will just abandon their invasion plans instead of going all in and attempt to conquer your whole empire by producing alot of units.

Basically put, when Humans do an sea invasion, its a friggin D-Day Operation.

When AIs do an sea invasion, its an tiny puny expedition on a vacation targeting 1-2 of your cities.

Most of the times anyways cuz what happened to me against hiawatha during gods n kings was the exception to the rule, he tried to pull a d-day on me but failed.

Maybe I gotta step it up to Prince. Then the AI might just step up their invasions.

Nah. Best they will send is auto exploring caravels to my borders!

Yeah that would be why, warlord and below is crap for war. AIs is neutered there.

Prince, they will start to send small group of units after you.

King is where it's at. Its way better for war than prince is. I don't even play on prince anymore. If you go above king difficulty then the science cheats is just too great and ruins the fun of playing the game.
