Is there a way to sort City States by type or even by Allies, friends, etc. doing a search gave a list too long

Don't think so, however you with Enhanced User Interface you kind of see it on the main playing field instead of having to go into the Diplomatic OVerview or that smaller menu or what not.

With Enhanced User Interface, you see them listed on the main field, sorted according to influence.
