Overall Civ Elimination Thread

Why does Portugal's UU give me a measly 200 something gold for its special ability, but takes navigation to get it?

Hmm? Portugal's UU is the Nau, a caravel replacement that you get at astronomy. The extra gold is nice, but the main aspect of it is +1 movement and +1 sight for it. This allows you to explore the world faster and get up your intercontinental trade routes faster, which provides a lot of additional money with the UA. It also allows you to meet city states across the continents, which is nice once you get Navigation for the Feitoria. Build that on every city state and you never need to worry about happiness or gold ever again.

I don't know how these work but I'll put my 2 cents in.

+ Celts because religion can make peace very easy and with peace comes building stuff. The hall's happiness is a big help at that point in the game too. Also, the pictish warriors are nice for faith-bump.
- Venice because I prefer how Austria does it.

Coincidentally, I loathe organized religion in my real life. Good for some people, not for me.

Now, if they say, got a free prophet when they discovered philosophy, that'd be a different story.

upvote venice. They are very powerful. I think the point that they can be disabled by embargo in the WC is irrelevant, since as Venice you have a bigger chance than most to be the one in control of the WC.

Goodbye, India. I think you're an awesome civ with some interesting history, but you're just not that well represented in the game. The UA is finicky, the UU isn't anything great, and the UB requires a prequisite and isn't that great either. You're awesome, but you definitely deserve to go out before Venice.

Meanwhile, Venice. Definitely think they need to hang on a little longer. I think people are taking way too much into account the negative side of their UA - but unlike India, they have massive massive boosts to compensate. All the money I could ever want? Being able to gain new cities with almost all their infrastructure and tile improvements complete? Being able to raise an army within 2 or 3 turns under an attack? Being able to control the world congress with ease and coast to the easiest diplo victory you'll ever have? Super capital thanks to internal trade routes? Come on! All of these put together make Venice far more viable than people here give them credit for!

Venice- 4 I had a couple of bad games with them that pretty much soured my opinion of them completely. Got locked out of iron in one game, I'll admit it was weird and uncommon that no CSs had iron but I guess it can happen. I can handle not having iron on land but being a sea based civ without frigates is just frustrating. Worst part was there was an iron plot 6 tiles away but my stupid UA wouldn't allow me to get it. The other bad experience was probably just bad luck too, I started on the opposite side of a continent from everybody that had a coastal city both CS and civ alike. I had close neighbors but none that I could get any sea routes to for almost half the game. I bought a CS on the other side of the continent and set up some routes over there which required almost my entire military to protect from barbs and left my capital and only city really worth protecting almost completely unprotected. The only luck I did have in that game was that my neighbors were cultural based Siam, Brazil and Byzantium so threat of invasion was kind of low. It may have been bad luck but then again you don't need much luck when you can expand how you want. I'll admit that their buying power is impressive in the late game but then again I can produce everything Venice can buy with a nice big order civ, yes even CS allies, wealth production and trading post spam can generate plenty of gold if I need it. Their late game power doesn't justify their early weakness imo. Sorry for the longwinded post but apparently downvotes for Venice need more justification than ones for other civs.
