No Treasure for Pirates

I noticed another glitch in the biq, while looking up the capabilities of the Ships of the Line:
the Ship of the Line 1st Rate has bombardment range of 50... I'm sure this is not intended... :D

Should we make a house rule, that we don't shoot at targets further away than 2 tiles?

Also the Ship of the Line 3rd Rate has lethal land bombardment, while 2nd and 1st rate don't have that capability. This looks like a mistake as well, but nothing we can do about (unless we find someone who is able to change unit attributes in a .sav file. I think it is possible somehow, Eclipse may remember that we once had a member of the GOTM staff do this for us in one of our PBEMs. Don't recall the details anymore. Or we just live with it.

Yes will be a rule; no ship, canon or unit may shoot more than 2 tiles, gunpowder units/soldiers may not shoot more than one tile.

I can understand why it might have lethal bombardment but the others should also have it. I'm guessing that this is (B) for bombing but it doesn't stop until one or the other is dead, likely the land target. I think we will have to allow this because bombing land and sea units is what these ships do. It will be our strategy to keep this 3rd rate or upgrade to a 2nd rate and then 1st, both being capable of sinking a 3rd rate ship.

I can try to open a save file this weekend and see if it appears editable but I have a bad feeling any changes made to it will crash our game

And another eventless month for the Peglegs, yawn...

PS: in case you do try to modify the Ships of the Line, be sure to keep a backup of the file. I think, the scenario is still a bit "fragile" and one slight hickup in a modification might make it unplayable, so we should mess with it as little as possible... If necessary, we can live with it: just keep a small number of 3rd rate ships around and use them last in a bombardment, i.e. use 2nd and 1st rate ships to reduce the hitpoints of the target, and when the target is down to 1 HP, use the 3rd rate ship "for the kill".

Captain Scarlett discovers better late than never that Spain had sunk or captured one of his ships (F3). But has nothing to report.

T006, August 1656 AD

France notices that Spain is still at war with the Swashbucklers, If it wasn't for a term of agreed peace we would be too

Frigate Faucon fires and damages a ship

Corvette Celebre fires and damages a ship (maybe the same ship

Frigate Beaufort fires and Redlines that ship (2/?)

Frigate Mercoeur fires and Redlines that ship (1/?)

Cutthroat island is still Undead

Yes I will be very careful, I'm not even sure if it can be done (by me)

I found a save game editor but it claims it doesn't work with our most current game version so not being someone that knows about files I feel we are stuck with these errors but I will make a note/quote in post#1 in case others want to play this.

Other news, I'm starting a 7 day Holiday to Atlantic City but I will have my laptop with me but no clue how much laptop I'll have

Captain Scarlett discovers better late than never that Spain had sunk or captured one of his ships (F3). But has nothing to report.

After thorough investigation, we learned that indeed one of pirates' ship has been sunk in Cuban waters. The report on the event came in rather late because traveling routes are unsafe because of the damned pirates (not to mention that our courier had stuck in one of Cadiz's brothels first).

-------

I obviously failed to report this. Sorry about that.

T007, Aug. 1656:

Meanwhile the English Guns continue the bombardment of Cutthroat Island. They are right on the mark, no misses, several undead batteries and buccaneers are damaged. (Obviously the French took good care of the undead ships: no more ships were hit by us.)

BTW: as there is no obligation to report pirate actions, I think there should also not be an obligation to report actions against pirates, should there? So Spain should be fine, even if they keep silent about the sunk pirate ship...?!

You are correct, if you attack a Pirate ship, unit or city you need not report it. I merely discovered it but idea how long ago it occurred, I have remedied that.

Also things I report from the Pirates are things I think a pirate would speak of like things you'd hear in a Brothel

It was simply my oversight, and I would normaly report what happend as we had not rule in place saying that I don't have to report it.

I am not sure what rule should be introduced regarding pirate and counter-pirate actions. If we keep silent about it, I am afraid there will be too much going on without proper reporting (we should think about lurkers).

On the other hand strict reporting rule could limit freedom of action for pirate factions because they are tied up to France or England.

Maybe we could leave it to the faction to brag about their deeds if they want, and if we ever manage to get new players into the game, then we should return to strict reporting rule.

Looks like our Foreign Affairs Department is in complete mess. No one there is able to find any document from those pirates offering peace. Anyway we wrote one such documents ourselves and sent it to the pirates. Let's hope there will be folks there capable of reading it.

We also wanted to remind Black Henry that, before entering Cadiz, he should check list of entrance fees with our coastal batteries.

Nothing else to report except that wine is finaly cooled to the right temperature and we can enjoy it properly.

BTW: let me point out that even though some work has been done on the Civilopedia since then, the following old quote (2009) from againsttheflow is still basically correct:
Anyway, to your original question on the pedia Eclipse, I'm afraid its seriously lacking. Hopefully you guys can get away with referencing the .biq every once in a while for now. :)

Some features of the game are still undocumented in the Civilopedia, while others are even documented wrong... Just found this out during my England turn, when I wondered, why after 8 turns my Cotton Plantation in Jamestown still hasn't produced a treasure. The Civilopedia says:
"Creates a treasure unit every 5 turns."

So I opened the biq file in the editor and checked it out: in the editor the frequency of the Cotton Plantation's unit auto-production is set to 10. :mischief:

So what I wanted to tell you: if you are unsure about the exact properties of this or that building or unit, open the .biq file (just double-click on it, and the C3CEditor will open) and go to "Rules -> Edit -> ..." and check it out. The written words in the Civilopedia may "lie", the hard facts in the .biq won't... ;)

I'm afraid that this will be necessary for you every once in a while, if you really want to appreciate the richness of this scenario and take full advantage of all of its features.
(For example, I always wondered, why there are so many different types of ships in the game, until I noticed that not every type of ship can transport every type of land unit: some ships can carry foot units, some can carry cannons/mortars etc. I haven't yet completely figured out, which ship can carry which and how this is implemented in the biq, but the creator of the scenario must have used some pretty neat tricks. E.g. the Marine unit is marked as "Tactical missile" in the biq, which at first didn't make any sense to me at all, untill I noticed that some ships (Ship of the Line for England/France/Netherlands, War Galleon for Spain/Portugal) are marked as "Transports Only Tactical Missiles"... :mischief:)

So I guess there is still lots of fun lying ahead of us, experimenting with this kind of stuff in a trial and error way... :D

The Swashbucklers find a safe harbor to heal their wounded and repair their ships. Black Henry receives a Peace treaty offer from the King of Spain and it is accepted. This locks in Peace with France and Spain for many years, in these years we know many ships and soldiers will be built and trained

Swashbucklers have NETR

French turn

The Frigate Foucon is given orders to fire on Cutthroat Island
it hits a partially repaired ship, it now appears to be 3/7

Corvette Celebre then fires
It too hits a very damaged ship wcich is now 1/?

Frigate Mercoeur fires
It hit one of their Undead Pirates, it looked like 5/6

Frigate Beaufort fires
and injured their Undead Pirates, it looked like 4/6

T008, Sep. 1656:
The English ships continue the work of the Frenchmen: two Undead Pirates and a Battery are further damaged, one miss.

Lord Lindsay, commander of the expedition to Cutthroat Island, asks for reinforcements from the main fleet. Governour Wilberforce promises a Ship of the Line 3rd rate to be sent south. Her specialized guns will hopefully help with sinking the damaged undead ships, even if hiding inside their harbour, and with finally getting rid of the undead defenders.

Since those pirates have settled down we can also sit down and relax.

Hey, the Froggs better take better aim! We might well have had a good use for that after we will have captured this nest... :( Cadiz is far... ;)

The storm on the last remaining Dutch Colony now begins: A Frigate and a Corvette bombard Namibia, destroying the Fortress and the Stone Walls. An English Line Infantry then charges, defeating a Dutch Matchlock Musketmen regiment. But the settlement appears heavily defended.

As no man appears to be left standing in Cutthroat Island, the English Fleet ceases fire, so as to not damage the brothel, and patiently waits for the specialists for these cases.
