i dont think this has been posted before. But newsweek came out with the top 10 countries, i wondered what you guys thought. here they are with a short description...

1) Sweden - High marks for health care and innovation

2) America - Geopolitical and entreprenurial powerhouse

3) Norway - Tops on the UN development index in 2003 and 2004

4) Japan - Little country that could: industrial titan, major donor

5) Holland - Combines a healthy liberal ethic with business savvy

6) Australia - Drawing energy from recent immmigration influx

7) France - Culture, cuisine... and still the catalyst for Europe

8) Ireland - Transformed itself from backwater to outsourcing center

9) Singapore - City-state with a corporate mind-set, clean government

10) Canada - Quiet, but a model for the open, well-rounded society

Obviously, these are not the worlds most powerful countries, but tops in certain criteria (whatever that is). They also gave marks for other things such as best country to be a student and so forth, and it seems the Scandinavia/Iceland seemed to come out with surprisingly high marks.

Alright, top spot! The interesting thing is while we were a Great Power in Europe, everything within the empire was in chaos and turmoil. But THAT would have placed us in any Civ game...

So what innovations come from Sweden? Just to let me know.

How do I climb the ladder on the UN development index? Having many oil-rigs?

Yes...Holland has always been great at topping in unknown criteria.

Any unknown criteria you can think of, we will be the best. (almost)

has anyone ever created a civ gov't to model those of scandinavia and holland and such. u know, with huge taxes but free top of the line health care and education?

somehow i find the reason for australia to be dubious. it's a description that doesn't mean anything. like professional athletes that say "we'll take it one day at a time and see how far we can go"

Sounds like theyre using them as a source of energy, like in the Matrix.

Thats stupid, if Sweden is there I dont see why Denmark shouldn't be there too. And they say Japan is small :dubious:, compared to the US, yes. But compared to the average country its very big, and with a high population too.

Stupid question perhaps, but what is Newsweek? And how does they weigh the different criterias against each other?
Did Norway end on third only because we're #1 in the UN development index since 2000?
What innovations did Sweden make that is much more important than what other countries made?
How much better is Swedens health care than the rest of us?
What is Netherlands healthy liberal ethic?
Since it mentions french cuisine and culture, I take it that this is not a top 10 for only 2003/2004?
What is different between, say, Norways, Irelands and Canadas model for the open, well-rounded society?

^^^Newsweek is a magazine in US that...tells the news, basically. It also comes every week. Very sensible name indeed.

First off, America isn't a country.
Second, what criteria is this from?

Yet another "study" which gives Sweden ridiculously high scores. What are the criteria this time?

Sweden is a failed collectivist economy with low wages, high prices and the highest taxes in the world, which will not survive in the long run.

If it doesn't get any better than that, I propose a worldwide suicide.

This is probably true of Darkshade at least.

Yes. British M.Ps need to look to singapore for ideas about personal hygiene. The new so called anti-terrorist shield on the strangers gallery is as much about terrorism as about stopping tourists gagging on the smell of the back-benchers.

settle down boys, im just reporting what it said. heres the link, but it only gives like a tenth of the story, i have the mag in print. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3037881/

anyway, read that bit and see if u can make sense of it.

edit: nevermind, u can scroll down to find other parts of this "special report" i have yet to find the top 10 table that is in the printed version though.

How can you Americans tolerate such blatant left-wing bias in your media!?!?

Just listen to this -
"While big countries like the United States like to tout their achievements, it is the smaller nations of northern Europe that can boast the greatest success in solving the problems of balancing competition and cooperation, capitalism and social security."
"Balancing"? Clearly socialist nonsense - Sweden is probably the farthest to the left in the entire developed world.

You seriously need to question what your media tells you - is equality really more important than absolute wealth?
