New IGN preview

Constantinople was renamed to istanbul in 1930 in a postal law by Ataturk.

i still don't get why you need to rename a city because of some postal law....

Yeah, I'm with you there. So unless the Byzantines are in the game or planned to be in the expansions, The Turks capital should be Constantinople.

I think it sounds pretty good. Perhaps less micromanagement as well, since the choices will be limited, and from the sound of it, more obvious.

It doesn't sound good to me... limited, more obvious choices can't be good in a TBS game! We expect varied, relevant choices!
So far I don't like this feature as it seems to remove important strategical choices, but I'll wait to hear more about it.

you get many, many more tiles to work as well as optimising the city. If you love micro, you'll be happy with this

i wonder.. how does a city defend if there are no units in it? the best guess i have is town militia or the police or even the national guard. its not like the theater will come to like and smack the enemy out of town... right?

I'm happy that the Songhaiese are in instead of the Zulus, they (or the Malians) really deserve the place as the African civ. The addition of the Ottomans also soudns pretty interesting, as well as the city-states.

Looks like this is getting better and better.

If population rises faster than culture expands your radius, you will have to make specialists (or more settlers). If culture is faster, you will have excess tiles to choose from. This is what happens in civ4 in fewer steps, but culture expands much further than city radius. The concern about production oriented cities is valid. Perhaps this can be circumvented by letting the city expand to tiles similar to those already being worked (i.e. if you work one forest, the radius will expand to another one) or by prioritising expansion to tiles that are being improved (meaning the player wants to work them).

Possibly this mechanic could work a little like the governor...you can set your city to prioritize production tiles or food tiles or whatever, or you could manually "work" tiles that you want to gain...you "build" culture on that tile, as it were...imo that would make more sense than it being entirely automatic as seems to be implied...

Probably the walls, castles, and maybe the intro of towers will defend the cities.

Oh and can you say FLAMING ARROWS!!!!!

Newcomer24 - Maybe that didn't come out right. I meant just the city governor functions, i.e. deciding which tiles to work. You pretty much have already made your choice which tile(s) to work when you expand your borders, so less micro on the city front perhaps. Or maybe the same, the city governors never seem to understand the best way to do things, so you'll probably still have to go back and micro everything if you slave or have pop growth, or if you want to squeeze every last yield out of your cities like I do.

CTP had ballista towers that gave +10%...probably that stuff will be drawn upon...and of course go on to things like anti-aircraft, trenches, etc.

The Zulu might still be in.

Oh no. So far Greeks have not been confirmed and the Civ slots are slowly dwindling.
Not only that but Florence appears to be a confirmed City State.

Will the Greeks be reduced to a scattering of City States? I hope not.

Greece will almost certainly not be turned into a bunch of city-states, I 10000% guarantee you that. Greece is one of those big civs that will never ever be left out of the game, like Rome, Egypt, or China.

Well I was a little let down when we found out about only one leader per Civ, but this preview has certainly heightened my spirits. :)

This in particular I found enticing...

Sound will also reinforce the culture of the civs themselves. Each civ has lists of licensed music from its own culture (Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and America), and you'll hear either the war playlist or the peace playlist depending on how you're behaving. There are also unique orchestral scores for war and peace in the diplomacy screens each based on actual melodies from the civilization they represent.

I've always enjoyed the music in Civ, but have found that it gets boring and repetitive quickly. Also, I'm glad to see that you'll have unique scores based on cultural affiliation (something I believe they partially implemented in Civ3).

how's naval warfare conducted.. are there any details already?

Nope...but now that you mentioned it I'm suddenly hungry for details on that...;)

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I loved the new infos!!!! thanks for posting it up. :D

the walls, castles and towers still need people to operate.
