Well, I started my first game of FFH2 today. Wow. It totally rocks. However, I totally suck. Here’s a small story…

I selected Hemispheres, Random everything, Standard Size. I got the Amurites, and their Philo/Arc. Leader, whose name I don’t know at all (sad, huh?). I was looking at the position the map gave me. I moved up 1NW to get an Entropy Node, 2 Dyes, and a Corn in my fat cross. After scouting a bit, I found tons of good city sites, and my neighbors, the Malakim. I played through a few turns, getting techs and founding cities. Finally, my first battle:

The team of Warriors moved slowly through the Forests outside the barbarian city. A few Goblins patrolled outside the city walls, grunting to one another. Too many to attack successfully. This particular team escorted the first adventurers to Settle outside of capital walls, and guarded the early settlement. However, barbarian incursions had led them to battle thrice, twice against Goblins, once against a Hill Giant. And every time, they were triumphant, learning the art of Combat and the skills of Melee. This was to be their first test, however, and they were ready. Weakened after a long march from the settlement, it was decided that they should wait until they were healed to attack the city, a large one at that. A Pasture of Cows grazed close to them. A few of the men looked hungrily at the, until their leader grunted at them to stay in line. Suddenly, the Goblins noticed them. Two groups charged. The Warrior team raised their swords, and answered with a battle cry. An hour later, the Goblins and a few humans lay dead. The Amurite flag was raised triumphantly over the Pasture. The Warriors gazed at the barbarian city longingly, but knew they didn’t have the manpower to take it. The leader looked south, then exclaimed happily. The remaining Goblins guarding the entrance had left with a group of laborers to a marble deposit further east. Yelling a fierce cry, the Warrior group charged.
The city was theirs.

The barbs contributed a nice 5 pop city with Fish, Cows, and Marble nearby. After a while, I reached my next target. I founded the Runes of Kilmorph in a northern fishing village, my newest settlement. The Thane headed west to the Malakim capital, and spread Runes there as well. I quickly gained Pleased status with that Civ. A Great Sage appeared, giving me Ether (?) as a free tech. I built the Guild of Mages in all of my cities, then pumped out two Adepts. One got Blaze, the other Combat I. Now, these are my first and only spellcasters, ever, so I’m still not sure what to do with them. But I did learn something.

The young Adept slowly made his way through the forest. He knew somewhere to the east was another Adept and the Warriors who had captured the barbarian stronghold. It heartened him. When he looked up though, his knees almost gave way. On top of the mighty hill was a Hill Giant. It was said these things could destroy whole groups of Axemen! His teachers had gave him one skill, however, the ability to create a fire. He doubted it would help him, but it might signal the other Amurites to his area. He muttered a few words, and a Blaze quickly appeared, creating large plumes of smoke. He started to run east, hoping to find the others. Luckily, they were only a day’s journey away, and the quickly reconciled. A slightly smaller hill stood before them, one they hiked up to gaze at their target. It was massive, at least 13 feet tall, and the club it held could kill three men in one stroke. The two Adepts gulped, but the Warriors simply gained a steely gaze in their eyes. They were ready to kill.
Around noon the next day, a bloodcurdling shriek could be heard. One of the Adepts, the one who had cast the Blaze, pointed to the west: The Giant was coming. The Warriors were roused and armed, and charged the slower Giant. As they fought, a full two-thirds of the group were either thrown off the cliff, crushed by the Giant’s club, or stepped on. Finally, however, the Giant fell. The lead Warrior took the head as a trophy, the yellow teeth and dull eyes the color and feel of leather. As they began to walk north once more, something blocked their way- a full Forest Fire was Blazing through the path, forming a firestorm that stretched from the coastline to the hills.

Yep. I didn’t know what Blaze did, so the Forest got burned…
That’s my tale for now. I might update later, or just keep this as a memento of my first FFH2 experience. Thanks for reading!
Okay, now for the actual gameplay questions:
1) How do I construct a Node to take advantage of Mana? I know I have to research Elementalism, but is that it? Do my Workers take care of this?
2) How do spells and other magic stuff work? I know they’re like promotions to get them, and I also know World Spells affect (duh) the entire world, but aside from that…
3) How do you access your Civilization’s hero?
4) How does the Armageddon Counter go up? I know Hyborem, Ashen Veil spread, and city razing affects it, but aside from that, does it go up/down automatically?
5) How do Great People work? Are they the same as their Civ counterparts?
Thanks in advance for responses.

get Knowledge of Ether and make adeps, yuo have some mana from palace so you will have already few spells.
Adeps is kind of unit that at slow rate get own xP with time... You need to have adepts lvl 4 to make them mages and Sorcerery tech.

Dont resereach elementaslism (you have already fire from your palace with amurites), and resereach alteration. (its rock also), because it is prequisite for Sorcery and elementalism not.

Build body node with adept on mana resource once you have alteration.
Body+fire mages are pretty awesome.

other option is go for Divination instead of Alteration , its just matter of personal preference and taste.

you civ hero is govannon. look up his prerec tech in the pedia (i can't remember it off the top of my head...)
the counter doesn't change automatically.

Okay, now for the actual gameplay questions:
1) How do I construct a Node to take advantage of Mana? I know I have to research Elementalism, but is that it? Do my Workers take care of this?

Researching any of the 4 "schools" of magic will allow you to build nodes of that particular school using an adept.

2) How do spells and other magic stuff work? I know they’re like promotions to get them, and I also know World Spells affect (duh) the entire world, but aside from that…

Access to spells depend on the unit's combination of promotions. There are 3 types of magic: Summoning, Sorcery, and Divine. Most spheres of magic have spells of all 3 types. There are also 3 levels of spells. Level 1 spells require the Channeling I promotion, level 2 requires Channeling II, etc. The promotions I've just named cannot be gained by leveling up, units come with them automatically.

For example, Mages can cast level 2 sorcery spells because they start with the sorcery and channeling II promotion. So if you want to cast Fireball, which is a level 2 sorcery fire spell, you need to give your Mage the Fire II promo.

If you look in the civilopedia section on spells it shows you the required promotions to acquire each spell.

5) How do Great People work? Are they the same as their Civ counterparts?

Mostly the same, though the number of GPP required to pop them out is different. The tech bulbing sequence is also kinda tricky, except for the Great Sage.

Good luck on your game! :)

Heh. Didn't turn out to well for the pictures. I managed to beat down the Malakim by amassing Swordsmen which came from the barb city. The Malakim also founded Kilmorph, which spread to me and became my SR. I built the wonder that grants 3 Hill Giants, which brought down defenses for my Swordsmen to mop up. Plus, the Adepts came back to help wipe house. I managed to use Blaze properly, since the Malakim had apparently not discovered Bronze Working, and forests were abundant near a few of their cities. Blaze prevented their reinforcements from coming to the capital while I wiped out any Workers. Finally, I took his cities.

Also, I found the Dragon to the west, near a few of my new cities. The Barbs there also managed to capture a Malakim city; which managed to help me. Now i just need tough units that won't get scared...

you need Spirit node (and Divination tech) , and Courage spell (lvl1) that comes with it.
Once you have sufficient army and your adept can cast courage you can go ti pick up dragon's treasury

Here were the battle plans; The 3 Hill Giants marched south to Udernarat, while Nininstrual trained legions of Swordsmen and a few Soldiers of Kilmorph. These met the Hill Giants. First target was the first Razed City. This was poorly placed, so it was destroyed. The Battle Group split. One went north to the coastal city of Lodente. It was large, but my culture didn't cover the food, so it starved down. :( On the other hand, Timberling had tons of mature Villages and Towns and a few Wineries, excellent for commerce. Both were kept. From these two cities, the troops converged onto Golden Leane. The siege took one turn, consisting of Hill Giants bombarding, then CR I/II/III Swordsmen beating down Warriors and capturing Workers. We went north to the second Razed City. It had the Order in it, but stole tiles from Golden Leane and Belerien. Finally, a few soldiers went north and captured Belerien, the Order Holy City, and Byrn, which has the Order present.

This is the North Western Continent. It has a Civ whose name I cannot recall on it   , but whatever. Their SR is the Order, and the thing is, they were best friends with the Malakim, so now they're annoyed for DoWing on their friend and for being heathen! They're lagging behind me in terms of size, etc, so I should be good after the economy is reshaped.

The other part of the Northen Reaches. This is a medium sized mainland surrounded by small islands. I'm planning on settling it and capturing the barbarian city, as long as Colonial Expenses aren't a factor... The Civ knows of the coast (which is how I know of it), but hasn't settled there. Quite odd, really.

South of Golden Leane lay the former Malakim City of (Unknown) and the realm of the Red Dragon. Great Courage is required to go to those lands. The barbarians actually captured a city for me, which is on my dotmap, so I'm keeping it. Then, legions of Courageous Adepts and Swordsmen will march to slay the Dragon!!

A decade of toil had come to fruition.

From throughout the Empire, young men had swarmed into the barracks of Nininstal and Uderanat, signing up for the military. Ever since the Malakim Empire fell, a new threat had been found. The hordes of the Red Dragon had made heavy incursions into the former Malakim Empire, threatening Golden Leane itself. However, years of training had created the foremost fighting force in the world. 20 Legions of elite Swordsmen, trained in the arts of the City Raider. 10 Mounted Divisions, Chariots and Horse Archers that moved swifter than the wind itself. And the most arcane soldiers of all- the Adepts. These Adepts had learned from the Archmage of Cevedes himself, 30 in all. They were the personal guard of the General, who had begun to walk up the hill that faced the coast on either side- the link to the lands of the Red Dragon.

"Men!" All faces turned towards the aged warrior, the veteran of the Malakim Campaigns.

"Today, we slay a Dragon! For decades, it has terrorized the Western Empire, slowly eating away at the walls of Golden Leane with its hideous Orcs and hordes of Goblins! But today, it will die! Some say it is impossible. But those same fools told us that Hill Giants were evil! That the Malakim could not fall! That the Gods has spurned Erebus! But they were wrong. And they will be wrong once more!"

A great cheer arose from the masses assembled below him.

"Today! We FIGHT! ONWARDS!!!!" The General drew his sword and pointed to the west. He was answered with a large cry from the men, who charged towards the hill. The Adepts and their Master saddled up. Quickly, they raised their staffs. In unison, a blinding light came from each emblem, and the light of the heavens came down upon the armies. The men stopped, puzzled.

"What did you do?" The General asked, confused by their actions. The lead Adept turned.

"They say one needs great Courage to attack a Dragon. And we have given your men the Courage of generations. Onward, General?"

"Aye! ONWARD!"

In a matter of days, the Barbarian city east of Dirage had fallen to few casualties. The army pressed onward. Finally, they were greeted by the sight they had been waiting for:

The Red Dragon himself! A bloodcurdling roar spouted from the lips of the beast, which snarled and threw fire at the advancing humans. The General's horse began to neigh, but suddenly threw itself forward. Looking at the old soldier, the men charged as well.

The Swords and Maces clanged against the stony scales of the Dragon as the fire flew from its nostrils. Goblins and Orcs spawned at its feet to assault the invader, but were repulsed. Every step the giant beast took killed dozens of men. The Hill Giants threw boulders and trees, while the Adepts cast spells. One by one, however, the Hill Giants were burned and killed, the Adepts destroyed by the wear of the battle. The General was left defenseless. The Dragon was too strong! Only 3 Legions of Swordsmen were left, and even they were tired and had no Morale. But they continued the assault. First one, then another leg was hewn off, sending the Dragon crashing into the ground. Its fire did not appear. Was it dead?

Suddenly, it roared once more, in great agony. Its monstrous tail sent twenty men flying into the ocean below, while the rest of the army moved onwards. The General knew there was not much time left. It was weak to be sure, and its fire was nonexistent. A few well placed blows would kill it....

"ROOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRR!" An earsplitting cry rang through the woods. As the men looked up, they saw the colossal beast twitch twice, then blood spurt from its chest. The General's sword was in between its ribs, a shot right through the heart. The 1st Legion's commander ran up.

"General! You have done it!"
"No, my son. I have killed a dragon, but at what cost?"

The dead were slowly counted and buried. Mourners came from all over the Empire. Even the God-King deigned to visit the site. A new era had begun for the Empire. What it would entail, however, would be anyone's guess.
