Now that there was peace the Vikings could devote themselves to advancing themselves, starting up guilds across the kingdoms.



Thorgir had returned to Iona to rule his kingdom, but he sent his forces east to shelter in London, stamping Norse authority on the city. They would not rest for long though, as Viking ships had found a new inviting target across the sea.




Even as the Vikings attention shifted to a new enemy, the ancient queen of England died in exile, and the local Irish suffered the rule of the English no more, reverting back to their own governance.



The Dutch cities, fattened from commerce and with little sea defences, seemed ripe for the taking. As the Norse pulled out their emissaries they were told to take what they could. Soon after war was declared, and Viking ships readied themselves for battle in the harbours of London and Oslo. As most of the troops had come from the northern kingdoms a Lulean prince, Njal son of Kvedalf, took command of the raiding parties.




Even though the Dutch defenders were heavily dug in the Norse berserkers charged fearlessly at the heart of the city. Many of the defenders were slain where they stood, but they somehow managed to survive the first wave. Then more Viking sails were spotted on the horizon...




This was the northern reinforcements, with Njal at the head of the fleet. They quickly despatched the last Dutch defenders, and seized Amsterdam. With the rest of the fleet supporting him the Dutch had little chance of retaking the city.




The next year the Vikings turned their attentions to the rich pickings of Dutch Denmark. Raiders landed all along the coast to pillage the Dutch hamlets.



Soon all Dutch control disappeared and Fredrickstad attempted to repulse the Norse raiders. It took a few years to get back and finish off the last cottages, but eventually they too were razed, as was Fredrickstad.





This left the useful provinces of Northern Denmark firmly under Oslo’s grip, and opened up Europe to the Norse presence.

Great story. Without England and the Dutch, you basically have Australia and south Africa to yourself, and you can compete with France for Canada.

Im gonna try and share the colonising around the conquered nations. So there'll be some Viking colonies, Dutch colonies, English colonies and Scottish colonies. Lots of cities!!

then again, I have only played about 20 turns in, so..

Even as the Norse hold over Northern Europe grew longships were sent out from Kalmar to find new lands. Heading down the coast line they soon met representatives from the Spanish and the Portuguese.




The Vikings were keen to establish safe ports this far from home, and sent many diplomats to Iberia. It was not long till the King of Portugual acquiesced to hand of the King of Kalmar’s daughter, and in 1290 Portugal came under the protection of the Viking Kingdoms. The Viking stewardship was to prove beneficial as many technologies were traded.




At the dawn of the new century grand maps were made of all the most powerful nations in the world. It seemed that China spanned the greatest distance, protected as it was by its Great Wall. The Norse were fourth largest, and it seemed the Russians had expanded quickly, so all efforts were made to acquire their new maps. The Norse had also perfected new weapons of war, and started to develop cannons for the coming European Wars.





Although China’s wall had protected it so far in 1310 the Norse Scouts, by now completely assimilated, came across new organised invaders. It seemed these Mongols would prove China’s greatest test yet.



And sure enough, as the 14th century wore on China slipped from its pedestal and fragmented under the Mongolian onslaught. Safe lands that the Scouts had known for hundreds of years suddenly looked very menacing.



Back in Europe the Norse sailors were reporting sightings of Spanish Caravels, and the Kings came together to agree their battleplans. It was decided to ignore the easy target of France, and send all the Norse troops overland into the heart of Iberia. Spain had recently declared war on the French, but the pitiful invasion force they sent only spurred the Norse on. The Portuguese could hold the western line while the Norse cut off the Spanish iron mines and the Spanish interior. The Kingdom of Iona suggested the King Hraldr of Lulea himself should lead the warband, as most of the warriors came from that Kingdom.



To increase the Portuguese defences their Swedish cousins traded them the secrets of Gunpowder to help kill the Spanish.



The first wave of reinforcements heading south through France just happened to stop the Spanish invasion as they were wintering in Angers.



While the same year Norse spies managed to steal the entire contents of the Parisian library, bring many literary treasures back to the Isle of Iona.



Back in Kalmar an engineer Sinan the great was born, even though a master of espionage had been hoped for.



By 1380 the Norse warbands had captured their first Spanish city, the northern outpost of Valladolid. Even as the King of Lulea oversaw the pillaging of the city, the Kingdom of Iona declared itself the homeland of the Norse people. The new Kingdom of Scotland quickly crushed any devolutionary thinking and claimed all the lands of the Norse as their own. The city of Kalmar was not strong enough to resist the Scottish might, and the King of Lulea was far too far away to assert his claims to his Kingdoms. The new Scottish King, Robert the first, proclaimed that his capital of Iona, and all his Scottish Kingdom, would live long in the history of this world.
