New civilizations?

I'm planning to make additional (and optional) civilization to FfH. It's called Xien, and set in a bit asian-styled theme. Main idea for Xien is that they are combining magic and techology, which leads to some "steam punk" bonuses. E.g.: one of their unique buildings is Collector that adds production for every elemental (and possibly sun) mana the civ controlls. They don't have a hero, but like Sheaim and Kuriotates are able to summon a dragon - mechanical dragon, more exactly. In addition, Xien make fine crossbows (which gives them upgraded crossbowmen) and are proficient with golem crafting (not as much as Lichuirp, but enaugh to get powerfull replacement for coper golem). I'm thinking also about golem factory and manufactury - both providing science and production - but I'm not certain about it.

I wonder what you think about this, and have you thought about any new civs for FfH?

Well, I like the name :p Could be hard to form them so as not to step on Luichirp toes for flavor. And the mechanical dragon I am guessing would actually look like a dragon, not just be a strong war machine (Doviello have that right now)?

I would love to play an evil Gnome(only major fantasy race left out) civilization, although that really wouldn't fit the theme too well.

It has been stated that, in the FfH universe, Gnomes are a subset of Dwarves, specifically the Luchuirp. If you want evil gnomes, just play Luchuirp with AV (or Council of Esus, in Shadow). Although their starting alignment is Good, they make one of the best Evil civs, and are particularly well suited for thriving at a high AC.

Hmm, why is it that all the proposed new civs are basically just more Luchuirp? ;)

I have no art for the dragon right now. If someone provided me with it, I would be very gratefull. I'm not really good at that stuff. And yes, if I have any choise, I'd like the mechanical dragon to actually look like dragon.

reminds me of dominions II.

anyone?

I like the idea of an asian civ, that part of the world isnt really represented in FfH. not so sure about the golem thing though, too closely related to Luchuirp. perhaps rather give them steam powered machnia/robots (for want of a better word) that are not powered by magic like Luchuirp golems, but through technological programming, clockwork and steam.

i also like Valis's Hermes civ, idea, very interesting.

personally i would love to see a civ based around an Bird/humanoid race, lets call them 'Avians' for now;).
(Im making all this up on the spot btw :p)
Avians should be a race of birdlike people who live in great eeires on the tops of mountains. they do not worship the gods and angels as the other races do, and neither do they worship the dragons. instead they worship the Earth itself, each individual piece of it, from every rock, to every tree, and every other living being. above all they worship the sun and acknowledge its gifts to the world.
they strive to develope an understanding of the natural bounds of the earth, and read the signs in nature, particulary those left upon the winds as they carry the knowlege and information from every corner of Erebus to the next, and this knowlege is eternal as wind will never cease to exist, it is a permanent record of the history of the world.
Avian are generally a peaceful race, living above the clouds they rarely meet any other inhabitants of Erebus except when they go down below the cloudscape to examine the world. however, if they are threatened they protect themselves as best they can. they would use their knowlege gained from their studies to persuade the winds of the world to do their bidding, to seek the suns aid, and to use the worlds spirit to defend themselves. they would call together flocks of warrior Avains, armed with javelins, spears, bows and lances, and charge any opponent as well as any blood lusted race.

so

Palace should provide Air, Sun, and Spirit mana.
all their units should have be able to do little recon runs like the hawk, but with shorter distances, they should specialise in long shafted weapons (lances, spears etc, and ranges weapons that can be used from the sky. all units should ignore wall defence bonuses (would a wall stop a bird?) but they should all get sever penalties vs enemy ranged units. they should get bonuses in research, but be agnostic (and instead of getting priests etc, they should get 'scryers' who scry the winds for knowlege and meaning. with divine spells for Air and sun spheres etc.) they could be able to build cities in peaks, but if they do, enemy units can also enter the peaks, and perhaps unable to build cities on flatlands (only on hills and peaks)

anyway, those are my ideas, i doubt they will ammount to anything , but there you have it :p

@ Valis:
Very, VERY interesting. Have you made any graphics or unit models? I would definitely have a use for Flying Ship, Steam Castle and any new lizardmen unit:)

And... a quick thought: what if I combine the idea of technomagic civ and lizardmen tribe? Highly civilized Xien during the Ice Age could forge an alliance with savage, but intelligent reptiles. To survive in harsh conditions both parties had to rely on each other, Xien providing sophisticated knowledge and lizardmen being great hunters.

Now Xien could recruit not only "technical-style" units, but also a whole bunch of two legged lizards (hmm, similarly to Clan of Embers?). Considering that, even a dragon could be real, just maybe a green one. I also like the idea of jungle special bonus, but I'm not sure how to implement it. What I can think about at the moment is special improvement buildable only in jungles and only by lizardmen workers. That improvement thingie could add a wide range of bonuses - health, happines, production, whatever.

And one more thing: I'm not an artist, so I really need help in modelling and graphics. If anyone of you has unit models (not posted yet at this forum:) ) and wants to share it - I'd really, really appreciate it.

Sorry, no graphics. We were both programmers and wanted first to 'proxy' the new units and buildings and then head hunt for some art guys when we had a playable version.

We had a separate forum for design but now it is gone cause the free host stopped to be free one day. I will look for the database backup.

Things I remember:
- new technology 'steam power' with would add 1 hammer to workshops, maybe a world wonder 'boilworks of...', it would also grand the Union a new unit, 'Steam Golem' - a golem with strength lower than a copper golem but with the ability that would trigger at the end of turn in with all of his move points would be used or in with he had attacked, it would give him 1 extra move point and +3 str so when he is set in motion it is hard to stop him :)
- submarines - fragile ships mostly for reconesanse with limited transport capability, the Union would get a submarine hero 'Nautilus' with would be an attacking ship, normal submarines would be available for all civilisations
- flying ships - national units for transport
[those two would require also new technology]
- the Olympics - national wonder that would raze every 'the Olimpics' in the world [so every one could build it again and raze the one that you have and so on...], +1 culture in every city on the continent, + happy in the city its build, + trade route yeld etc. , the idea is that if you spend production on it you never know how long you will be holding to its effect, can be build only when in peace, it is razed if you start a war
- some kind of 'big Berta', a big canon that you would have to reload with supply trucks [do not know if the AI would cope with it]

If you want help then contact me on PM.

Hmm I like the lizard man idea and the asian type civ idea but I don't think all these machines really fit in with ffh. IMO canons, helicopters, submarines and musketmen have no place in ffh.

Hmm I think I'd prefer reskins and stuff for existing civs first and I doubt that a new civ would ever be included into the main mod because there is some kind of balance that they wouldn't want to break, 21 civs, 21 angels, 21 mana types. Although I think some sort of kajiit based civ could be quite cool. Although I suppose they could easilly be incorporated into the malakim. Still it's fun to think about it.

I think some people might enjoy mod mods with new civs ;)

Yeah definately but, alas, I'm not a modder lol. Although I really hope someone has a go at making a new civ. An Aztec style lizard man race would be cool too.

well, in time when the warhammer fb mod has its lizardmen, there should be a good chance to do something with them for ffh too ,)
