SKNES III: Bullets with Butterfly Wings

New England, present and accounted for.

To: New England
We look west, south, east and see enemies all around. Let it be known that we intend to trouble you no more. In that spirit, we offer you a defensive pact.
>

To: The Empire of Louisiana
From: The Dominion of New England

In consultation with Her Majesty's government in Westminster, the Dominion moves to accept your defensive pact. We eagerly anticipate an era of co-operation and friendship between our two great nations, and on the North American continent.

To: Delhi Sultanate
From: Kingdom of Mysore

In order to preserve peace on the Indian sub-continent. The Kingdom of Mysore feels that it is necessary to establish a non-aggression pact between the Delhi Sultanate and the Kingdom of Mysore.

List of the Spanish Political Parties

Monarchist Parties
  • Partido Restaurador (Reactionary): this party is among the most reactionary of the entire gamut, demanding the unification of the Republic of Spain with Aragon-Sicily to form a new Spanish Empire, with the Aragonese king as the new absolute king. They are seen as Aragonese puppets, though, so they are very unpopular, save for some places near the border with Aragon-Sicily.
  • Partido Realista (Conservative): this party is quite conservative, and advocates the restoration of the monarchy under a new King, breaking away from the Borbones. They are in favor of keeping the democratic institutions, but reduced to give the King more powers.
  • Partido Constitucional (Liberal): a liberal party that supports the restoration of the Monarchy, but keeping nearly everything else the Republic currently has. They broke from the Partido Realista in the early 1840s as they turned further and further towards more conservative positions. They tend to vote with the Partido Liberal in most issues.
  • Partido Imperial (Conservative/Nationalist): this party supports the unification of Spain with Portugal and Aragon-Sicily, to create an empire as close as possible as the one formed under the crown of Philip II.

Republican Parties
  • Partido Carlista (Republican/Proto-socialist): founded in the 1830s, this party is a supporter of measures that extend rights to the people, and always talk in favor of a reorganization of the model of state to grant Cuba and Puerto Rico self-government within the Republic. They also support the expropiation of lands from the Church - the Mortmain - to give them to poor laborers to exploit them well, an increase of taxes on the greatest fortunes to fund important projects, and the organization of labor to protect the workers from the depredations of the landed gentry and the growing number of businessmen in control of factories.
  • Partido Demócrata (Republican/Liberal): one of the two great parties of the Republic, they are quite liberal and a pillar of the Republican institutions. Currently in control of the government. They support giving more rights to the people and the expansion of the colonies to civilize the locals and improve their lives.
  • Partido Romano (Republican/Conservative): modeling themselves partially after the ancient Roman Republic, they are fierce supporters of the Republic, but advocate for a greater concentration of powers in the hands of the Parliament and to avoid rocking the boat until it becomes completely clear that there will not be any problems in doing that.
  • Partido Demócrata Católico (Republican/Moderate): a splinter of the Partido Demócrata, they have similar goals, but the PDC is supportive of securing an alliance with the Catholic Church to further the goals in ways approved by them.
  • Partido Republicano Ibérico (Republican/Nationalist/Liberal): one of the main pillars of this party's program is the support of an unification of the three Iberian nations (Spain, Portugal and Aragon-Sicily) in one enormous Iberian Republic capable of shining the light of True Democracy over the rest of the world.

(I know it's not much, I'll try to write more later)

@SK: the name of the ruling party should be Partido Demócrata from now on.

Italy reporting in.

I'd like to play as Sardinia, if it isn't already taken.

Bair what country will you play next turn?

To: Korea, Vietnam
From: Portugal
CC: France, Great Britain, Netherlands

Portugal will join the other great powers in discouraging a potential Korean-Vietnamese military alliance, in concern of the effects it could have on the stability in the region that we have all worked so hard to achieve.

To: Austria-Hungary
From: The Holy See

Your apology has been accepted. May God be with you.
His Holiness, and his blessed successors, has been most concerned with the liberal reformist direction Austria has been taking over the past several decades. Bringing your country back towards a state less influenced by the unholy writings of Voltaire and Marat would be looked favorably upon by His Holiness. End this "constitutional" nonsense and restore true, divine, rule.

(OOC: I don't have Jehoshua powers unfortunately, so feel free to laugh uncontrollably at how horrible my Papal roleplaying is, but that sums up the Pope's position on the matter.)

To: Austria-Hungary
From: Hanover

The Kingdom of Hanover is not interested in making any agreements with you, who was allied to the country that helped steal our rightful territory.

To: Austria-Hungary
From: Hessia

Hessia is interested in a military alliance. Let this be the dawn of a new era of friendship between Kassel and Vienna.

To: Austria-Hungary
From: Wurzburg

Wurzburg is interested in a defensive alliance. Perhaps sometime in the future, if conditions are right, a full military alliance would be in the cards.

To: Austria-Hungary
From: Wurttemberg

Wurttemberg is interested in a defensive alliance, but no more than that right now.

Delhi here.

Though I wanted to point out that in the stats it says my upkeep is 43 but the 2 numbers below it add up to 50.

Thank you for catching that, it should be 50, not 43. I'll change it.

Question for GM- Which views are most popular amongst dissenters against the Austro-Hungarian regime?

Mostly various minorities, particularly in the Balkans, arguing for greater representation/ self-determination or even independence from Vienna. There are also those calling for the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic, but that mostly goes with the aforementioned nationalism, and most of the Germans and Hungarians within the empire aren't in favor of such a radical proposition, instead favoring merely increasing constitutional power. There's also a small but vocal minority of German nationalists calling for Austria to become part of a pan-German state, but their numbers are declining.

It's also worth pointing out to everyone that the Catholic Church is currently Europe's running punchline because of how irrelevant it is and how relevant it likes pretending to be. The Catholic Church's views should not be taken as representing any form of widespread sentiment.

Sweden here.

I'd like to play as Sardinia, if it isn't already taken.

Welcome!

lurker's comment: Should have gone for Butterflies with Bullet Wings.

To: The Freedman's Republic, Florida
From: Louisiana

You are our close friends, and we hope you can aid is in war and in peace. In this spirit, we offer status as protectorates, in which you would receive protection from threats near and afar, as well as financial aid, in return for an alliance.

To: World
From: Louisiana

We are happy to announce that the doors of the Empire have been opened to all immigrants, near and far. We have plenty of opportunities in business, the military, or other professions.

To: France, Great Britain, New England
From: Louisiana

We are looking to industrialize, and loans and investments could speed this process immensely. Therefore, we plead you more developed countries to help us along this difficult road.

To: New England
From: Louisiana

We would be willing to take your colonies in the Caribbean off your hands for 10 EP.

To: The Kingdom of Poland
From: The Kingdom of Prussia

To our Eastern Neighbors, we are looking to expand relations, and hopefully move past the disputes we have witnessed in the past. We hope to expand relations enough to sign a non-aggression pact, and a promise to maintain peace in our region, and indeed all of Eastern-Europe.

To: All concerned parties
From: Vietnam

Vietnam hereby withdraws the alliance offer to Korea.

Additionally, in an attempt to assuage some of the concerns about East Asian stability brought before him, Emperor Tu Duc hereby invites to a diplomatic dinner and reception representatives of the heads of state from the aggrieved regional powers: France, Great Britain, The Netherlands, China and Her Vassals, Mysore, Russia, Portugal, The Spanish Republic, Korea, and Japan. We would invite Siam, but the populace of Vietnam wishes to inform them that they smell.

Retroactive guest list addendum: We have been informed that, due to carelessness, our friends in the American Republic have been overlooked. They are hereby invited to the diplomatic dinner.

It is our esteemed Emperor's hope that bringing representatives of these nations together will provide an opportunity for discussion and, ultimately, a way to bring stability to the region.

OOC: For those of you who are under the impression that this is a blatant attempt on my part to make you forget what shall henceforth be known as The Great Vietnam-Korea Diplomatic Debacle, you're right. But that's pretty much the whole point of diplomatic dinners, so...

From Ignacio Morales Guerrero de Colorado, Foreign Minister of the American Republic
To the Louisianan Minister in Mexico City

The recent diplomatic initiative by your government has crossed a critical, indeed sacred, line. Over the past recent months your monarch, inspired by a passion of Machiavellian ambitions, has sought to create a web of alliances and treaties across the American continent. Now you have sought to end the independence of the states of Florida and Costa Lina, bringing them under the benevolent and autocratic rule of New Orleans.

That is quite enough. You will repeal your offers extended towards these weak states, for they are not genuine offers of protection, but demands that you be allowed to protect them, else harm may befall them from the much larger, and stronger, Louisianan military. Bullying and intimidation have no place in international affairs, and the American Republic, while peaceful and isolationist, does not desire to see a European-implanted monarch spread his dominion across the Gulf of Mexico.

Cease and desist your efforts to subvert the democratic states on your borders, and to build military alliances. They damage the long-term harmony and prosperity of the American continent and the American people.

From Ricardo San Martin, American Minister in Boston
To the Dominion of New England

We find your alliance with the Louisianans most distressing.

From Javier Benito, American Consul in Hue
To the Vietnamese Government

Ahem.

In response to the distasteful remarks of the representatives from the American Republic, the Louisianan foreign minister issued this statement earlier this morning:

The accusations made by the Americans are outrageous and ridiculous. Firstly, the alliance between New England and Louisiana was made with only defense in mind: any moves of aggression would not be supported by the other, and indeed would be looked down upon as disturbing the peace of the American continent.

Secondly, the offers of protection to the Floridians and the Freedmen are for just that: protection, in return for closer economic and military ties. We have made no move to impose our will upon either nation, and if they decline the offer no reprisal shall be done to them by the Empire of Louisiana.

Thirdly, the Empire finds it disgusting that in the same breath as you accuse us of forcing others to submit to our will, the Americans move to do the same to their New English brothers.

In short, we shall not submit to your demands. They are ridiculous and repulsive.

OOC: This may seem a bit illogical, but I'm a sucker for roleplaying...

From Austria
To Responsive German States

We consent on the terms you have proposed.

From Austria
To His Holiness

Our first concern with annulling the Constitution was that we could not morally do so. We had ceded powers to the people and could not take them back. If His Holiness believes we can, then our remaining concern is fear of revolt. However, the risk becomes manageable if His Holiness is willing to aid us.

If His Holiness consents and affirms we are within our rights, we propose abolishing the Constitution and replacing it with a Personal Union. Said union will involve the regions of Croatia, Bohemia, Galacia, Austria, and Hungary as separate kingdoms. Each will have an elected Parliament with which I will consult upon law. However, all right to pass law will with the Emperor.

To help this reform, we request first that the Church agree to affirm within all Catholic areas that we are in our rights, and threaten all who revolt against us with excommunication and denial of the sacraments. Second, we wish His Holiness direct the Church within our realm to use its sermons to preach against potential revolts. Third, we request the small favour of His Holiness publically affirming to the world that nothing in our reform is outside our lawful rights.

From Austria
To Sardinia

We propose a non-aggression pact and defensive alliance. If you are willing, we would even be willing to make this an offensive alliance.

From: The Kingdom of Prussia
To: Whomever it may concern

We hereby announce the signing of full alliances with The League of The Rhine and The Duchy of Hessia. Along with the signing of defensive alliances with The Duchy of Wurttemburg and the Duchy of Wurzburg
