I tried to like the Landsknecht. I really did. In any other civ's hands it would be nasty. Not Germany's.

You can't go wrong with 3 range on an archer.

Well, that was a tough choice, between saving hoplites or sipahis, and crippling minutemen or landsknecht. But here you are. Now I hope another hoplite lover will try to save them...

EDIT: woo! It turns out I have eliminated the landsknecht! The reason I don't like them as much as the other UUs is those that have already been expressed: bad base unit, a very expensive upgrade, and crippling maintenance. Doesn't really make justice to its real counterpart (except in the fact that they were mercenaries, thus the high maintenance, I guess...).

Hoplites are much better units than people give them credit for. I've eliminated early civs with these things.

Gotta ding the hoplite, they're just not that useful due to the dominance of the swordsman.

Healing Siphai, if you don't like them you're not using them right.
 
My thoughts on the Hoplite:

The hoplite is definitely a superb unit you can obliterate whoever you want to basically right out of the gate but in standard speed they become basically obsolete to swordsman the moment an AI would get iron, and their upgrade is basically pointless. (Ignoring the fact that your Companion would probably destroy the enemy sword, the point is you should build as many swords as you can instead of hoplites because you will upgrade them to longswords, but if you have a distinct lack of iron, Hoplites would work fine in most situations, I do find their weakness to be from gratuitous ranged damage, especially from walled cities :mad: You could also bring catapults with your hoplites, but it just makes things so much more complicated than just building a mix of swords and companions)

They really shine on Marathon speed where you could very easily wipe out two neighboring AI before the middle ages, and follow up with Longswordsman to cleanse a continent. But that's the thing you'd have to basically build an entire new army to utilize your continued push. But if you united a continent with hoplites you could just set up shop and get whatever victory you choose. But really the promotions your hoplites would get are useless until rifles : / That's why it's lackluster.

I'd say if it got something like a 10% bonus versus melee units or even better an automatic Cover I promotion, I think the unit would be rated as one of the best, and more ideal for a hoplite rush rather than a sword rush, the extra strength just doesn't compare to the healing abilities that the Immortal gets.

That is if firaxis ever took off the upgrade lasting promotions:mischief: we would have to completely redo this unit list methinks. Drawn out analysis over.
