End of Empires - N3S III

Awesome update. Nice to see that Krato hasn't fractured or anything. Just one question North King, what is that Aqua nation to my north?

To:Bahra
From: Krato

Would your glorious country by interested in an alliance to ensure that the link between the South and North is maintained? Trade and protection is be ensured if you accept.

@ the Triuli: We are happy to see your prosperousness, but we are alarmed at the expansion on the Aortian Peninsula. However, we do not wish to have hostilities, so shall we divide the peninsula in half? You may continue expansion on the western part of the mountains, but do not enter the eastern half except for traders and others like that.
To the Nahar

: Congratulations on your newly created empire. Be sure not to be overly ambitious, that is the downfall of many.

OOC: Entertaining update as usual.

We will cease our expansion on the eastern side of the Evinui hills, we just desired a native port on the eastern sea. We can assure you that your western border is secure and send you a gift of ivory and furs from the north.

Can we get your assurance that any expansion on the western side won't be into our lands?

To: Stad Men
From: Nahar

Of course we will try to avoid such behavior. To signify our good intentions, we extend an offer of an alliance between our two states, brothers as they are.

I'll be certain to be more specific next time. My orders were a bit rushed. Great job on the update.

If you stop raiding our lands, and act against any pirates that may be using your ports knowingly or not. We will leave you alone.

Are there any animals in the jungle that I could possibly find useful?

You haven't explored much. Natives tell you of a creature that sounds like an elephant, and of several other strange animals, namely a few large cats. More exploration will reveal more.

We agree.

The Gallatene Family

Cooperation. That is the key word in the order of the Gallatene family. All members of the family are not only expected but required to participate in the family’s commercial enterprises. The family therefore serves as the smallest economic unit within Gallat. Many times, families connected by blood, marriage or contract will combine their efforts to run a business, but each family is at its root a whole and cohesive unit.

For example, a family of weavers may divide responsibility for the weaving amongst themselves. The loom is likely to be operated by the father of the household, the oldest male member still physically able. He may be fed thread by his wife, who will also perform other specialized tasks such as spinning the thread. Children might wash and then dye or bleach the wool before the wife prepares it.

Because children tend to perform the most basic tasks essential to the economic success of any Gallatene family, families tend to be very large, often up to six or eight children surviving infancy. Many will not survive into adulthood, of course, and this is reflected in naming practices. Children receive true names at the age of twelve. Prior to this, they are known only by the number of the order of their birth (Second Son, Fourth Daughter, etc.). In rare cases, a childhood nickname may be adopted as the child’s adult name, but more common is to forbid such names from mention following the twelfth birthday. This practice is most widespread in the north and east of the country.

Husbands have some degree of supremacy over their wives, but, given the essential nature of children in Gallatene society, women have power. Many wives may be able to separate from or even divorce their husbands, but the arguments put forward are always on the basis of the welfare of the children. Husbands are more able to separate. However, the primary male argument for separation is lack of fertility, so a family with many children may make it easy for a wife to end a relationship but difficult for a husband to do so.

Most marriages are arranged, often between families which have intermarried before or are united in contracts. The nature of the arrangement of a marriage varies depending on the nature of the two families’ relationship. Previously intermarried families may arrange marriages as a part of a promise in the original marriage contract or as an agreement between the new mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Such marriages are typically arranged by women only. This contrasts with business contract marriages, which are often, but not always, arranged by the male heads of household who have previously temporarily united the families for economic purposes. A third method of arranging marriage consists in the possibility of buying children, almost always daughters, for marriage by wealthier families; poor families which may not be able to provide for children may marry them off for lucrative contracts with other families.

The elderly, those no longer physically able to participate in the economic activities of the family, are often sidelined in Gallatene society. Family obligations require that they be provided for, but their inability to work reduces their value substantially. Ironically, old women often possess more power than old men because they are still able to influence marriages and other domestic affairs while old men are typically excised from discussions of economic and external affairs entirely.

Question: Is that city to my north (across the straits) a part of Ritti? I can't tell.

To Nahar:
From Stad Men: We accept your alliance, to allow the cultures of Aourtia Xoti to be brothers with friendship.

A Hero's Return

A little boy pushed through the crowd, crawling through the legs of the spectators to the front.

“Hurry up sister, we are going to miss him”, The young boy shouted.

“I'm moving as fast as I can,” as the girl forced her way through the crowd. Squeezing between two women, startling them.

Trovin was bustling with activity as usual, however today was a particularly busy day. Admiral Vadeni had finally returned, years after first setting out from Trovin to destroy the hated Hamakua. Vadeni had returned as a hero, perhaps one of the greatest that Trovin has yet to witness.

Trilui had never been challenged as she was in Hamakua. Incompetence among the admirals in the south allowed the foe to gain the upper hand, it appeared that she would finally be halted in the Nakalani. However, when the momentum appeared to be slipping from the Trilui at the hands of Admiral Maka’ala, Vadeni was at his best.

Months earlier when a hundred galleys were crushed between the rocks, it gave a reality check to Trovin. The believed to be imperial navy had been defeated, utterly crushed at the edge of the world. It was not the results the emperor had hoped for, the aurora of invincibility shattered. Trilui was most vulnerable at that time, when the horror was still permeating through the populace.

The skirmishes between the remnants of Maka'ala's forces and Vadeni became legend in Trovin and the other heartlands. The stories were told to the children and elderly alike. However, this was the first time in many years that Vadeni returned to Trovin and a whole new generation of Triluin's have yet to see this man they view as legend.

However, it was not the return they wanted to see. A solemn procession wound through Trovin; eight horses pulling a wagon containing the body of Vadeni. Vadeni lived much older than the average Triluin, to the old age of 79. This contributed to the lore, giving him this aurora of invincibility that once surrounded Trilui herself. In his old age, Vadeni taught many young admirals at the academy before returned to the Nakalani to strategize against the pirates.

The young boy and girl stared on, they had finally seen the hero their parents praised, and cried that he was not immortal.

What are the different costs of units.. can't find anything much in the OP!

Tentatively claiming Baharr for my reentry.

From the Glory of Gold!

From the Mines in the North came a steady flow of pristine gold, best quality and quantity that the world had ever seen. Traders from all over the known world had recognized these mines as being the biggest trade centre of gold in the known world. It was to be expected that with the gold came a flood of artisans and craftsmen that would try and make a profit on this massive bounty. As the mines grew and the export increased more and more of these artisans moved from the dig site to the cities of Bahn, Neruss and Gyza. All oh witch where happy to receive this large amount of skilled craftsmen and artisans.

Cities on Nerussian Soil began to adapt a culture of artistic nature. Houses began to change from square clay houses, to a more refined look, all this due to the reformation of Nerussian culture. The people began to appreciate the peaceful side of life, and they started to take great pleasure in sculpture and art. This was truly the new trend for this era.

As the demand for art and sculpture increased, and as the amount of craftsmen increased, the craftsmen in effect had formed a solid middle class that would forever distinguish Nerussian culture. This new middle class that was surprisingly rich cranked the economy into high gear. The people were now able to afford such delightful things as golden statues of the ancestors.

Truly the gold that the Nerussians had acquired had, had an immense impact on the way of life of the Nerussian people.

The history section has been updated, as has every section of the front page except for NPC stats (and Avaimi; sorry Dark :p). Some of the stuff might be interesting even for current players; I hope it's also useful for potential new ones.
