After years of playing, what new things have you found in Civ 4?

In my last game I learned, that when one produces something small in a city that makes a lot of :hammers: , one only gets the :gold: for the base-amount of :hammers: that are over the OF-limit, so if i. e. producing a Spy for 40 :hammers: , while the city has a production of 100 :hammers: and an existing OF of 50 :hammers: from the last built that get multiplied from a factory, that's 300 :hammers: . From that, 40 get spent for the Spy (260 left) , 100 base-hammers are stored into OF (the city's production) , and from the remaining 60 :hammers: , only 30 get transformed into :gold: (60 divided by the Factory) , so from 300 :hammers: one would get 1 Spy (40 :hammers: ) , 100 :hammers: OF and 30 :gold: = 170 :hammers: .

This is a little complicated, but it basically tells, that producing cheap units in cities with high amounts of :hammers: even with the patch applied to BUFFY and BUG is very inefficient. In normal CIV, one wouldn't even get any :gold: at all, but in the BUFFY and BUG version that has the bugfix, it's only base-hammers, so less than if a city produced Wealth, because then, multipliers would apply, so better produce Wealth, and don't produce cheap units on fast gamespeeds in high- :hammers: -cities.

Doesn't mercantilism cancel foreign trade routes in exchange for a great person?

Yes normally though not technically for a great person just a specialist. And as said apparently if you have vassals you keep foreign trade routes with them. Thus if like in my current game you have 17 vassals it proves quite useful.

Yes, if you have Mercantilism, you still get foreign trade routes with vassals. And the boy us is one free specialist per city.

If a vassal also runs mercantilism, will you get trade routes with his cities? In my current game there are no international trade routes with my mercantilistic vassals.

Solutions are spies, demands and trade.

Yes you must just be unlucky. In my current game both Stalin and I run Mercantilism and he is my vassal and I am getting trade routes with Moscow and Saint Petersburg his 2 largest cities.

Do you have OB with your vassals?

Probably I was wrong. My empire is huge in comparison to others, so I was cycling through numerous smaller cities and non coastal capital with lot of small domestic trade routes. It seems major foreign routes with vassals are concentrated in few recently conquered large coastal (LH) cities (with castles ).

I realised that Space victory can be reached before,10 turns after the spaceship launch.

-Only one leader(somehow their name is me :p ) can send their spaceship and always win after 10 turns from launch time in BTS version 3.01 (no patchs nor mode)
-In BTS 3.19, a leader sending their spaceship after another leader who have already sent can win if the other leader declares war and nukes someone else meantime??

still need to discover what effects space race victory time after launching that spaceship.

Spaceship flight time depends on the number of Engines. AIs only build 1 Engine at most times, that's why their Spaceships need longer. It's even possible to send away Spaceships that don't have all casings or thrusters, though those have the chance to fail completely, chance depending on how many of which parts are missing. You can see all of that when you click on "view spaceship" in the victory tab.

After the first arrival failure (80% succeed chance), you won't ever launch your spaceship with less than 5 casings again.

Yup.
Once in friendly multiplayer, I sarcastically :joke: told a player that he should go ahead and launch - it didn't matter that he had less than 5. He is a little hard of hearing and did not realize I was joking. Of course, it failed to arrive; and he was not amused.

If you mouse over the trade icon in the scoreboard, it will tell you the commerce value of your trade routes with that nation, and the average per route. In BUG, anyway.

The event whereby industrious villagers build a pasture themselves doesn't care if the target square has a forest.

They usually dont, thats rare. That must be a different map that isnt played as often as random map pangea. Camps wont clear forests nor jungles for sure.

Gimmicky maps like Great Plains distribute terrain features oddly, compared to more normal maps like Terra or Hemispheres.

One of my cities had four wheat, two cows, two horses, and gems.

More of a personal thing I learned than a completely new thing.

Attacking Sitting Bull before cannons is a fail. I built up a large stack of trebs, Xbows, pikes and muskets, and he had castles and his highly promoted longbows. Problem was I started on a small cramped shared landmass with him and I tried to take him out too early with trebs. Did not work.

People on the forum talk about how over powered Praetorians are. I once learned that Praets, even when built with upgrades can get easily owned by Sitting Bull's dog soldiers. To this day it still pisses me off thinking about all those units being crushed by Sitting Bull's forces.
