El-J 03 ~ Going Rogue, AoI Style

Don't know about the British PC, but the Russian and German ship positions seem rather standard compared to the other games I've played - they just park them in place and occasionally shuffle them.

And it seems (from a short Wikipedia browsing) that the Japanese navy didn't give Navy prefixes (USS, HMS, etc) to its ships.

Well there were other ships with HJMS in front of their names so I added it too. :)

I'm also confused about Germany's navies in WWI and WWII. I have understood that in WWI Kaiserliche Marine had SMS (Seiner Majestät Schiff ; His Majesty's Ship) in front of the ship names while Kriegsmarine had none. Is this correct?

Dude, why are you giving in to all these weak powers from various parts of the world? Spain, Italy, and the Scandanavians especially pose absolutely no threat to us, and I very much doubt they'd have declared if you hadn't paid them off. I realize it's Sid, but Japan's in a really safe position- the only nations that can really threaten our territory are the Brits, French, Russians, Germans, and Americans. It might seem like a pittance, but 300 gold is pretty significant- we need all the gold we can to fuel our production build-up.

You have to be careful of those European nations like Spain, Italy and Scandinavia. I think at least one would have declared war over it. They get a ROP from Russia and the positions in Korea would be at risk. Remember with the SiD setting that they have a ton of "free" units from start and after a year of production (at heavily discounted rates again because of the difficulty setting) they have more than enough to pose a serious overland threat. The gold is no big deal honestly over the hassle from that.

Refuse away with the South American punks. They have to come over the water to get to Japan and the IJN is more than strong enough to deal with them and who knows, we might be able to build the marine improvement from it after some target practice. :D

Interesting game, so far... Too bad I've been busy with RL and couldn't join in.... I also say that China should be fairly high-up on the list of targets to snag... Even as the Boer Republics, China ended up being one of my most valuable territories (Boer Inf and Commandos in 3 turns or less), and that's not counting the fact that as Japan you can build Colonial Admin buildings all over the place and get a ton of Raw Materials in no time!

I agree about Scandinavia, as its ships are pretty awful, but Italy's iffy - it's got some nice ships it could send after us. Spain, however, I fully disagree with you - they do have quite a few colonies in the area, and we don't need to be dealing with even small incursions when we're trying to set up infrastructure. Once we get through 1896, I don't think Spain will be as serious, but until we're set economically, they're fairly dangerous. Likewise with the Netherlands if they act up - small Industrial sector, but quite a few colonies, and enough are in the area to be dangerous to us this early on.

Whoops, sorry. Here it is. Was too tired to remember.

IBT - ZIP

Week 9 1896 AD; Turn 16

Destroyers 1 researched: AI wants Military Tradition, we take Pre-Dreads 2. Bar to 20% to get it down to 4 turns. Net income 463 a turn. Very nice!

Gold standard complete in Tokyo. Start construction of rail terminal. Since Toyko shields are at 99 right now, doesn't make sense to do the stock exchange in 3 turns (200 cost total). That will be next.

Factory complete in Niigata. Stock exchange started.

Typical Japan with the cities to the north not having very good production. That won't really change that much until we get the ability to put shields in the water. The next best thing is the Industrial advance so we can at least put the population to work on civil engineer duties.

Valdivostok got the extra tile due to culture between Akita and Hamhung. Going to have to fix that and also fix the issue with Sapporo's culture. Time to get to work. ;)

Sapporo: Current production: Factory. Switch production to public library, rush it for 380 gold (University next with the big 3 culture).

Kuril Islands switches from factory to theater (lost cultural ground to Sakhalin). Theater complete in 1 turn.

Seoul, rush factory for 512 gold, switch to Financial Institution. 6 turn production bump turns into 3 turn production and cash bump.

Pusan switches from factory to Financial institution (11 turn to 14 turns for completion, but the extra 3 turn wait is worth it for 50% increase in cash along with the production bump).

Taipei, switch from Coaling station to Theater, rush it (564 gold), switch to Business district (complete in 1 turn).

Kagoshima: Well, Tokyo is moving along nicely for production, but we don't have a good second site yet for wonders that will need to be built. Think we set up for Kagoshima, but its going to be expensive. Steal the woods tile from Osaka for extra production. Man, oil fields is a good one to do too, but no University, Stock Exchange or Sport stadium complete either. Need the production tho. Rush it. (568 gold).

Move the engineers near Osaka down to the industrial tile to covert it from irrigation to a mine. (2 turns).

Dump the happiness slider to 10%. MM Ryukyu, Taipei, and Kuril to compensate.

End balance: 2793 gold with a 603/turn surplus.

IBT

Brits move a transport and cruiser in south of the main islands. Look to be headed to Shanghai.

Week 17 1896 AD; Turn 17

Sapporo completes Public Library. Start on University (10 turns)

Osaka completes Stock Exchange. Start on University (10 turns)

Kagoshima completes Oil Fields. Start on University (8 turns).

Hamhung completes Rail terminal. Start on Business District (10 turns).

Taipei completes Business District. Start on Financial Institution (12 turns).

Kuril Islands complete Theater. Start on Public Library. (20 turns).

Balance 3396 gold. Income at 662 surplus a turn.

Well, decision time: I just see the need to get Kagoshima up to speed as quickly as possible, but Taipai needs attention as well. Soo much and so little gold.

Kagoshima: rush transport (80 gold), rush naval base (1160 gold). Switch to University. 2 turn completion. Will have to get busy with the lab after that.

Taipai: rush transport (80 gold), rush worker (340 gold). Manage Taipei's population so it stops growing. (need to convert the irrigated tiles to mines for extra production).

End turn: 1736 gold and 722/turn.

IBT

LaPlata wants 100 gold. Go scratch, we have real battleships.

Week 1899 AD; Turn 18

Tokyo completes Rail terminal: Stock Exchange 2 turns:

Taipei completes worker: Would love another or culture, but Financial institution is the call. 12 turns.

Mine complete SE of Kagoshima. Send workers to do the tile directly to the north.

Raw materials await pickup at Kagoshima.

Balance 2458 gold. 720/turn.

Start heading the transport from Akita to Taipai for pickup.

IBT

Trondheim completes Great Novel wonder.

Week 1896 AD; Turn 19

Kagoshima completes University: Starts Lab (9 turns)

Seoul completes Financial institution: Starts Library (8 turns)

Cash 3181 757/turn.

Would like to do more, but.. Make sure everyone is happy. Zero out the science slider for a nice 844 surplus this turn.

IBT

Pre-dreads complete. Moving along to Industrialization. Science slider at 10%.
Brit cruiser off the coast of Kagoshima.

Week 1896 AD; Turn 20

Tokyo completes Stock exchange. Starts Sports stadium so we have at least the option to try for the Olympics.

Mine complete next to Kagoshima (shield production now 51 there after corruption).

Kagoshima: Switch to stadium, rush it. (1196 gold) Switch back to Lab (complete in 1 turn instead of 8 now).

Tough choice on the 2 engineers. Do I do roads and then mines next to Kagoshima or get some of the other irrigated tiles dried out for increased production? Think at this point, time to dry things out a bit. Start mine north of Tokyo with the idea that Tokyo's production (currently at 108) needs to go up.

Transport moves to Taipei, picks up RM and heads for Kagoshima.

Russians are annoyed, so I toss them a gift of 50 gold to keep relations ok for now. (They go from annoyed to polite).

Balance 2779 G, 797 surplus.

Turns done:

Notes:

The three engineers are about done next to Hamhung. I would have them get started on the irrigated tiles to convert them to mines to up production faster in Korea. They have 4 to do there and then I would consider moving them to Japan proper to help there for now.

Kuril, Sapporo, Akita and Hamhung all need culture in a pretty bad way to get tiles back from Russia or keep what we have. Taipei needs attention as well on the cultural front and also just about any improvement that can be done there so they can start churning out colonial workers to help improve the land.

I would look at doing Olympics in Tokyo and Worlds fair in Kagoshima. As a matter of course, I don't like doing Wright Brothers wonder at the capital because they will always be busy building vet infantry and the opportunity to move vet aircraft elsewhere is a consideration. I think Tokyo or Kagoshima are the best canidates for the Transoceanic Radio signal wonder (extra shields in the water) as those are our two production centers.

Overall, so far so good.

I know that this doesn't belong here but I'm still curious about this one.

I'm also confused about Germany's navies in WWI and WWII. I have understood that in WWI Kaiserliche Marine had SMS (Seiner Majestät Schiff ; His Majesty's Ship) in front of the ship names while Kriegsmarine had none. Is this correct?

Put the plains tile being mined in Taipei back to work, assign some specialists since everyone there was an entertainer. Switch production in Tokyo to a steam transport, rush that, switch back to a sports stadium and rush that. Switch the remaining entertainers in Tokyo to other specialists. Put a few extra tiles to work around the Ryukyu Islands. Assign specialists in the Kurils. 1339 gold in the treasury.

IBT- Nothing.

21- Stadium finishes in Tokyo. Start building Railroad Corp as prebuild for Olympics. Kagoshima finishes research lab. Start building the Palace as prebuild for World's Fair. Conscripts finish the mine in Korea, start mining cow tile by Pusan. Reorganize some tiles in Korea (lumber hill to Pusan, coal hill and iron hill to Seoul.) Rename the HJMS Akira Taipei 1 so I can remember where it goes when we get more transports, send it to Kagoshima, unload the RM and cash it in, and send the transport back towards Taipei. Changed the formatting of all our warships so they look like this

That's (Class) HJMS blablabla, this automatically sorts all ships of the same class into groups when you right click on a stack so it's easier to find the ship you need out of a big stack. Rush build the Financial Institution in Taipei. 1434 gold left, 824 GPT.

IBT- Nothing.

22- Factory finishes in Sendai. Start Stock Exchange. Financial Institution finishes in Taipei. Switch to transport, rush, switch to Deep Water Harbor, finish rushing. Stock Exchange finishes in Niigata, start Japanese Infantry. Workers finish mining Tokyo rice tile, move them to the Tea and start mining it. Rush library in Ryukyu, and Business District in Hamhung.
1218 gold left, 873 GPT.

IBT- Nothing.

23- Business District finishes in Hamhung, start Financial Institution. Deep Water Harbor finishes in Taipei, start worker. Library finishes in Ryukyu, start Financial Institution. Turn science down to 0%, scientists will still finish up in 1 turn. Rush Rail Terminal in Akita and Library in the Kurils. 1291 gold left, 1004 GPT.

IBT- Nothing.

24- Industrialization 1 finishes. Go for the Theory of Flight, don't need to raise science spending past 0% to get it in 4. Finish the Rail Terminal in Akita, start a Factory. Finish Library in the Kurils, start a Financial Institution. Workers finish mining the tea near Tokyo, send them to work on the last railroaded plains tile for Tokyo. Switch the Railroad Corp in Tokyo to the Olympics, switch Stadium in Kagoshima to the Palace (Decided it was better to get Wright's here and see if we can get the World's Fair after the Olympics in Tokyo.) Kill the luxury tax. Rush the worker in Taipei, the library in Seoul and the Financial Institution in Pusan. 1439 gold left, 1090 GPT.

IBT- Russia demands 90g, I give in. They go from annoyed to cautious.

25- Worker finishes in Taipei. Rush transport, switch to Coaling Station, finish rushing that. Finish Financial Institution in Pusan, start Factory. Finish Library in Seoul, start Factory. Workers in Korea finish mining cows, I send them to mine the bonus plains by Hamhung. Send the new worker in Taipei to help the old one mine that plain. Rush University in Osaka and in Sapporo. Switch build in Hamhung to Hospital so it can grow past 50. 1471 gold left, 1119 GPT.

Thoughts for the future- The focus right now should be on wonder building and on building up an invasion force for taking the Phillipines, since that seems to be what we decided on as our first target. For wonders, I'd advise building the World's Fair in Tokyo after the Olympics finish next turn, and the Wright Flyer in Kagoshima. As for the Electronics wonders, Kagoshima should get the Transoceanic Radio Signal since it works 2 more oceanic tiles than Tokyo (extra shields are big), and I'd advise building the other two in Tokyo. As for the rest of Japan, after the current round of improvements I'd have the productive cities in Japan and Korea start building infantry units and have Sendai, Akita, and Pusan start building naval stuff, including enough BB's to give us the firepower to take Manila.

nice work Donkeyman  i agree w/ your thoughts for the future, too :)

new order:

6.) Whomp -- up

on deck
7.) Adler17 (bump down until further notice)
8.) ZeletDude
9.) ChaosArbiter
10.) Maimonides
1.) El Justo

a note on screen shots - we love 'em here of course  however, it's advised that you save the screens in png format. this type of file is very crisp and clean, far clearer than jpegs which give off a blurriness w/ some reds and blues. not so w/ png files. bmp files are the most pristine although the file sizes can get pretty large. so imho, png files are the best medium.

Looks great. I won't be able to play this till Saturday so if someone wnats to slip in that would be great.

Merry Christmas everyone!
