Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Can my SGL roam around popping huts for a few turns without the fear of popping barbs?

I wouldn't risk that... An SGL is worth up to 1000 shields (ok, in the early ancient age you are probably better advised to invest it into something like Pyramids or Artemis, so it's 400-500 shields), losing that would be a major catastrophe... Even if you don't pop barbs from huts, you can always run into them (which usually happens, whenever I send out a settler without escort...)

My only units are two workers and an SGL. Can my SGL roam around popping huts for a few turns without the fear of popping barbs?

Yes it can. Unless you have some military, you won't pop barbs. Although I don't know if the SGL is counted as military. I suggest you try it out and reload on losing the SGL, after all that'll help add to the knowledge of the community.

Hello all. Newb question:
Is there any way to add resources icons in Civ 3 1.29f ? No PTW; no C3C.
I ask that because i have the idea of make a new luxury resource, "mate" (a kind of tea in South America), required for one UU.
This way the civ who finds that resource in early age will have some kind of advantage with this UU.

I know by now how to add resources in the editor, i just want to know if i can make a new icon with paint or something like that, and where to save it, so i can relate in the editor with my new luxury resource.

Thanks all in advance. I just sign up but i follow this page since years and i learned a lot with you guys.
This is not a newbie question to the existing version of the game, it is about Creation & Customization aiming to create a modded version of game. It should be asked in the proper forum:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=46
And in particular the Tutorials, Reference and Guides section.

Basically, what you have to do is add a small image file to one main file where all resources are listed (these will appear in the city screen, in-game map and trade advisor), as well as one large and one small icon for the civilopædia. If any of those are missing, the game can crash.

Edit: you shouldn't do this with the main game, save it elsewhere as a scenario and do a lot of backing up, lest you need to have to reinstall.

Also, a most important question: why mate? And why is the resource not called ‘yerba mate’? ;)

Are you Expansionistic?
You gave me an idea. I wonder whether it's possible to form an army made of GLs. How pointless would that be?
You can't have more than one Great Leader at any one time. ;)

IIRC ‘military’ means units with battle power and HPs. So Settlers, Workers and Scouts don't count, and Leaders shouldn't either.

True, true. But why would you skip on a few wonders or a wonderful Age of Science?

I removed windows 10 because I could not play CIViii. message was "You need authorization" I tried under administrator but it didn't work. I am not computer savy, I have played this game for 10 years. I don't want to give it up.

You say that you're not computer savvy, which is fine. Note that option 1 is basically saying, "re-buy the game on Steam, and it will not need the authorization check." Yes, that seems harsh, but it may well be a small dollar investment to preserve running one of your favorite games.

Consider this :
You're playing a 20k game and are Saving an SGL for Shakespeare theatre. You finish a research and get another. So we do have 2 SGLs at the same time.
And it might even be possible that when you get the SGL, you don't have a wonder to build at all and you're not willing to tilt the game in your favour by using the SGL to get the "wonderful" age of science so you'll naturally save the SGL.

That wonderful age of sience has not real effect whatsover. It only confuses you by changing the estimated research time without changing real research output.

In order to make a point for pointlessness. :crazyeye:
Spiritus properius modderius, invoco tuum!

Oh, I seldom get a Science Leader, so what's the deal with this? I read about it a few years ago.

Only partly, I haven't got a SGL in so long that I never see the feature pop up at all. Incidentally, sicne Armies skew the game so badly in my favour, MGLs are useless.

I'll try that forum you referenced. Yes, i learn that tip of backing up on the hard way...
Hahaha, and yes, the resource will be named 'yerba mate'.

I ran civ3 fine in early Aug and it ran fine, then in early Sept it would not start. I then did a system restore to Aug 8, and worked fine. that night MS did a new update and would not work again. I tried to restore back to Aug 8 but system would not let me. I believe MS did something to the binkw32.dll file or something in permissions. anybody have any thoughts or fixes.

for some reason every time i try to load a map into civ 3 that i've customized the rules to it will tell me that it lost info half way through and close my civ even though a map with default rules will still work perfectly

This does not look like a "newbie question" to me that can be answered quicky...
Rather like a deep and complicated problem with your modded scenario. Better try your luck in the "Creation & Customization" forum or in the "Technical Support" forum.
