Planes/Bombers disappearing?

I have just started playing Civ5 and I'm in the Information Age. I have built a bunch of planes and bombers and fortified them in cities near the borders of my area. My problem is that I can't find them to wake them up! There is no icon, that I can find, to click on and I do not see units that are fortified in the city listed in the city screen like they used to be in the early Civ games (I've played this series since Civ1!)

How do I wake them up so that I can use them?

Moderator Action: Not much strategy -> therefore moved to "General Discussion".

Right above the city will be a number (which is the number of aircraft in your city). Click on the number and the list of aircraft will appear. Then select the one you want to use.

You can also select the Military icon in the upper left hand corner (normally, the Science icon is selected). In the Military view, you can select any of your individual units. I find this very useful for finding galleys and scouts that may be out exploring.

and there is the military overview from the lists icon on the upper right of the gui.
