This is the best one so far: Age of Discovery II
And to toot my own horn, although the mod really isn't anything special (yet): Australian Colonization
To play the mods themselves, the usual way is to create a folder called 'Mods' inside the Colonization folder, that is usually in the 'program files' folder. There may be mods with other instructions.

im kinda hip to the whole where to put mods thing. im a huge SC4 player.

The official patch is in the works, but in the meantime you can use PatchMod: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10965
It fixes all the major problems with vanilla.
And I told you where to put the mod, because Firaxis designed the game for mods to go in a different folder. But to put certain mods in that folder causes graphical bugs among other things.
