Language translations for leader sayings

I would say it is a mistake. Possibly because of how many languages in close contact with English tend to use 'j' with a 'y' or 'h' sound. One might be programmed to not opt for dʒ when looking at foreign names.

By Wikipedia the Sanskrit 'gajah' is not too dissimilar to from 'ga-yah' but still closer to 'ga-jah'.

It would be silly for anybody to be offended by this though. Otherwise we Irish might be able to start a whole campaign against English misuse of our names. "Kate-lin"? That's not how you say Caitlín!

Let us look at Polish place names.

Many English speakers would inevitably mispronounce them.

Wroclaw is not pronounced "war-claw" but is correctly pronounced as "vro-(t)swaf" for example.

Doesn't quite make sense that they found an Old Javanese speaker who wouldn't have identified the pronunciation error. Although I do agree that I was thoroughly confused when I couldn't here any 'Gajah' or 'Majapahit' at all in his dialogue
Edit: Actually I think I hear him say "GaJAH Mado" in his intro, with the correct j sound.
EDIT: Oh you mean the Dawn of Man intro

If the speaker consistently mispronounced Gajah Mada then maybe there would be some natural linguistic error for him to be pardoned

But he said "Gayah" then "Gahah" which shows he put zero effort into actually caring about the correct pronunciation. Maybe it's just me but if I'm narrating something then I think I would notice if I said, for example, 'Atila' one moment then 'Atilla' (spanish sounding) the next

And yeah Majapahit is also a hard J

my mom could understand one of Gajah Mada's let's hear it, the "maso" one, she says it means "enter" or "come in" in Malay (Masuk), which makes sense, in this context, it probably means "forward"

Request: Would you consider a trade? Or Will you help my kingdom, friend?

Peaceful: The fact that you still live is a testament to my restraint or We will shift our tactics...this will not be the end!

For some reasons, when an AI declare war on me, it's always some kind of generic text used by every other ones... Something like " you are merely a stepping stone on my path to victory ! prepare for war ! " I don't seem to get any personalized quotes for each leaders besides their intro speech... anyone else have this problem ?

A note on Gajah Mada's dialog:

The actor spoke in East Javanese dialect (Gajah Mada's Majapaht kingdom is based in Trowulan, East Java). In East Javanese dialect, vowel /a/ is, if located in words ending with vowel, will be pornounced near to /o/, but will be pronounced as normal /a/ in words ending with consonant. Not exactly like vowel /o/ but near to it.

Hence many people will hear his introduction "Gajah Mada ring Nuswantara" as like "Gajah Modo ring Nuswantoro"

Some guessing on translation. This will be rather difficult as Old Javanese is moribund language only used by artists (shadow puppeteers, traditional Javanese opera players etc) and scholars in modern day Indonesia.

* Gajah Mada Intro: Hangadegto kito hinar pakan maha wirya, Gajah Mada, ring Nuswantara [You face us, the great warior, Gajah Mada of Nusantara] (Nusantara is poetic name for Indonesian archipelago.)

* Gajah Mada peaceful: Ring hayun to ayo watu aperang lawan hulun. [Let's stop fighting with me.] (perang is Malay/Indonesian/Javanese means war. with a- suffix as negation this could mean ceasing war, or peace)

* Gajah Mada attacked: Lir toho-toho warito kito. Lir dahat apanggung Kunang. (Some thread in reddit said that this means "How dare you you insignificant fly", with kunang means firefly in Malay/Indonesia/Javanese)

* Gajah Mada declare war: Hang halangito kito. Pala ning hulun ring prayaca nira. (I don't know the meaning but sounds like he treatening to put your head, or pala, on spear or something.)

Old Javanese relationship to modern Javanese is almost precisely like Old English (Anglo-Saxon) to modern English. Old Javanese lacks loan words from Arabic, Dutch and Malay/Indonesian, gained by modern Javanese due to Islamic religion, Dutch colonization and modern Indonesian period, respectively, while retaining more from Sanskrit loan words and archaic Austronesian roots.

Are you talking about the text or what they're saying? This thread is about what they speak. The text is often generic and rarely unique to the individual civ.

Have we gotten at least a transcript of Shaka's Zulu? Or Pocatello's Shoshone (the only thing I can make out is that he introduces himself as "Chief Pocatello", not his real name)?

I can only make out Shaka's NeutralHello line: Bayethe! (Hail!)

I do not understand Zulu however (but I mostly got it from comparing what he says to his peace and war themes and their translations.
