great artists you would want in bnw.

I like to think that splitting the Great Artist into three categories will mean that Great Writers will not be required to be "Arty" writers, if you catch my drift. For example, judging by the Great Writers ability "Create Political Treatise", it sounds like GW's aren't only writers of fiction, but also political writers, debaters, philosophers and so on.

This could be a shortcut to including other historical Great People that doesn't easily fit into any of the original categories - for example, Dag Hammarskjöld is by some regarded as one of the greatest diplomats of all time, and he is also somewhat famous for his philosophical writings. Do you think he would classify as a Great Writer? Are there other people who would fit the label GW, if we extend it like this?

That's a very good point! Perhaps we will see the likes of Karl Marx (Das Kapital or the Communist Manifesto) and Thomas Paine (The Age of Reason/Common Sense), and other philosophers and political writers that could really do with representation in-game.

Bob Marley, Great Work is "One Love".

I think they meant "same era" in the sense that "it spawned in the same era in the game". Just as they said there'd be a theme bonus for works from the same civ, even as they were showing Edvard Grieg (a Norwegian) appearing in Poland--in other words, when you spawn a Great Artist/Musician/Writer, which one you get is chosen randomly, and if you use them to create a work, it counts as being from your civ in the era it appeared. So, for example, Shakespeare can spawn in Siam in the Atomic Age, and then Macbeth counts as an Atomic Age Siamese work. At least, that was how I understood it.

Yeah, that's probably it unfortunately. Oh well, this just means I'll be able to make a project of modding in all the Hard Rock Great Musicians I want. :p

I don't think anyone owns the copyright to James Joyce, the man. Even then, if the law is the life of the author plus 70 years (its hard to tell because they change it every time Mickey Mouse is about to become public domain), Joyce died in 1941 which would have made his works public domain in 2011, no?

It's sad, but you'd almost need to be a specialist copyright lawyer to determine how and if something like Civ 5 could use various artists and their works from the 20th Century. In the realm of literature, its becoming increasingly difficult even for an academic to cite the original authors words at length in an obscure monograph. When it comes to music, there is the additional difficulty that the recording has its own copyright, although many of earliest recordings are becoming public domain each day. Museums each have their own policies on how you can present works in their collection, nowadays many trying to keep those rights to themselves to sell posters, coasters, digital pictures etc.

An unfortunate state of affairs really.

It would be nice if they gave a nod to Dr. Seuss or Brother's Grimm, although it would be a bit odd having Hop on Pop in the Louvre. Their stories and books may be for children but how many people have developed a love of reading or writing due to well written childrens tales.

also Lucy Maud Montgomery with Anne of Green Gables

Billie Joe Armstrong defined more than one generation... Although I think he's still touring so that's almost guaranteed copyrighted stuff.

My Artist/Writer/Musician Hopes/Dreams:
J.R.R. Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings
Mozart: The Magic Flute
Beethoven: Für Elise
Michelangelo: David
Rembrandt: Night Watch
Homer: The Illiad

Off the top of my head: Aeneid by Virgil.

Will think of more.

I'd love to see either Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, or at least one jazz musician added

I wonder if they'll include Alexandre Dumas and give him "The Three Musketeers" as his Great Work. Could lead to a funny named achievement ;) (they can just give him the Count of Monte Cristo though). The French civ does seem to come full circle here, since the "unique unit"ness of the Musketeer is to a large degree due to that work of literature. After all, it's just another word for musketman or I suppose (no etymologist), just the turning into English of the French word mousquetaire.

Yes, it would be interesting to see a few "philosophs"/"political writers" like Jean-Jaques Rousseau or Karl Marx as Writers.

Michael Jackson better be in this game and if he isn't I'm going to be writing several angry letters to Mr. Meier.

I suspect you are going to be writing several angry letters. However, I would recommend that you direct them towards the record industry.

Let me rephrase, michael jackson better be in this game as a randomly spawning great general that gives added culture or something or glitter.

As for great artists:

Bouguereau
Giotto
Bernini
Durer
Pollock
Warhol
Spielberg
Eisenstein
Van Eyk
El Greco
Caravaggio
Poussin
Lorrain
Watteau
Hogarth (for the brits)
Goya
Rubens
Titian
Van Gogh (the one who got stabbed by al qaedas)
Manet

Mainly Giotto and Bouguereau. Two unsung heroes of painting. Giotto pretty much single handedly started the renaissance and Bouguereau is the greatest academic painter of all time. Also add Manet for being the greatest painting troll of all time.

Bouguereau is the best painter of all time and people don't even know who he is.

I didn't know the name so I searched it. I think it is very likely they include the Birth of Venus, most people have seen this work or others inspired by it even if they don't know the name.
