In TAC we already have special military units:

Native Mercenaries (DLL-Diplo-Event Native Mercenaries)
Hessian Mercenaries (DLL-Diplo-Event European Wars)

I would like to introduce 3 more:
(Units that cannot be bought, but only available through special events.)

These are really units, not professions.
Of course, these guys could also not take any professions.

1. Conquistadors (Screenshot)

These guys are specialist in fighting Natives. (50% bonus)

Otherwise they are pretty much the same as Milita.
(Fighting with Swords.)

When at war with a Native Civ, there are chances, that an (dll-diplo-)event with your king (or your second religious parent) is triggered.
He will explain, that many have heard about the cruel savages (and of course of their riches) and will fight with you, if you are willing to pay them.

If you pay, one of them will appear in your capitol city.

AI would buy them with this event also.

2. Bukaneers (Screenhot)

These guys are very good at attacking cities.
But, they cannot be put into a stack and also,
when they conquer a city, there are chances that they destroy some buildings.

Otherwise they are pretty much the same as Milita.
(Fighting with Swords.)

When sinking a pirate ship, there are small chances, that the crew of that ship will surrender to you.
(If there is still a cargo slot on your ship available.)

You will get an (dll-diplo-)event with the king telling you, that he heard about you having captured some pirates alive.
He will also tell you, that he does not want you to let them live, because his image in Europe would suffer.
Also, if you kill them, there would be some bounty for them from the trading guilds.

Choices:
Keep the Bukaneers -> Attitude of King will get a little worse and Bukaneer placed in ship.
Kill the Bukanees -> Get a small amount of money.

A random will decide for AI what they will do.

Alternatively they could become available in Port Royal from time to time.
(Once we implement "Port Royal".)

3. Rangers (Screenshot)

Rangers are people from the new world, that really know the terrain.
They have abilities of a scout (line of sight and being able to move on peaks) but with movement speed of normal infantery.

They get huge bonus, when fighting in woods.

Also they are invisible when standing in wood terrains for other units except other rangers, scouts or native mercenaries unless they are moving on the same field.
Thus they can be used for ambushes.

Otherwise they are weaker than regulars.
(They have guns, but not the same level of training.)

When at War with another European or with your own King and you have 50 guns and 10 gunpowder in one of your cities, which is bigger than 10 citizens, there are chances for an Event that will create Rangers in that city, because the people of the colonies will want to defend themselves.
(It will be a normal dll-event, no diplpmacy event.
You will be asked by a popup if you want to give them the guns and gunpowder.
AI will always accept.)

General Comment

I simply feel, that having some more special units will bring a little more fun and diversity to the game. :)

Just like the other special units they will be rare, because they cannot be bought or trained.
As I said, they are just available by special events.

Feedback ? :)

Hi Ray,

I like the three units. If I remember my mods correctly, I think the Conquistadores are from AODII, and they were a specialized unit only available to the Spanish. Will that still be the case? The Buccaneers look great, and I really like the concept around them. I also like the idea of the rangers, but is there another unit we could use to represent them? To me they look a little too European and not woodsy enough. (Just a minor thing)

I too think it will add some extra fun to the game. Good job!

Yes, in AODII it was like that,

Will that still be the case?

No, the dll-diplo-event is for all Europeans.
Conquistadors would not be for Spanish only.

I will try to find better graphics for them.

Great. :)

It is only a first suggestion of having some more rare special units.
(It is only fun for me, if these are really pretty rare.)

What about these graphics for rangers ?

Or these ?

Or these ?

Or these ?

By the way, these migth be used for Robbers or Spies ...

melcher kuerzer has also uploaded graphics for a ranger. You will find them here at German civforum. He has written that he had taken them from Fall for Heaven. melcher has also produced buttons for that unit.

We are already using these graphics for the Experienced Hunter.
(Thanks anyways for wanting to help. :) )

Did you already finish this discussion?

I like these units, but the problem is that these units are in 16. century style. Most of the graphics of other mods - TAC for example . have a style from the revolutionary era (18.-19. century).

I think these graphics are a little bit "unsuitable" even though they would look very nice in the game. The mod should not mix the centuries (in general!).

Maybe it is possible to create a new mod for the rangers?

Maybe like this one...

(rogers rangers)

I would try to mod one, if you like gents.

I red something (in the col wiki I think) regarding a possibilty to change graphics of the same unit during the game. Maybe this is a feature for a later version of R & R?

You're right. But in my opinion it isn't a problem... We would get these units in early games and some of the units in TAC would have to be unlocked with inventions...

No ! We can already do that :goodjob: There's no need to add anything.
You simply need to upgrade units. I've already done it before.
See here:

or even better (Kailric's mod):

Of course not. :)
Almost no discussion here is ever finished.

If somebody got some ideas or simply wants to talk about something, a discussion continues.

I agree with Robert. Nice to hear that is already possible to change units.

Nevertheless I would like to mod a Ranger (the idea is to learn how to use the mod programs) and then present the result.

I like the idea that a ranger is dressed beneficial for his "duty" and his use as special unit/ special fighter in the new world who rather fights as a native than a regular/a european soldier. Therefore in my opinion a ranger should be dressed a little more beneficial for this.

Perfect.
(Looking forward to see your version of that unit. :) )

2. Bukaneers

(If there is still a cargo slot on your ship available.)

When do you sink a pirate ship wiht a ship with transport slots? I sink the pirates with frigates or ships of the line. Only these ships have a real chance against pirates. - Will the event comes to seldom if you have to a free slot?

You are talking about Privateers but I am talking about Pirates. :)
("Pirates" will be a new feature similar to "Wild Animals". They will appear often enough, don't worry.)

Also, currently all of the concepts for Special Units are only "raw ideas".
We will need to discuss these again, once we really start integrating.

I do not have the fear to find to less enemys. My fear is, that you need a ship with a free slot to sink it.

They could also directly be generated in a city. :dunno:
(Without being loaded onto the ship and thus not needing a free slot.)

Why not simply add a slot for frigates and ships of the line? And if no slots are available then ... tough luck ! ;)
The problem is if your city is far away it will seem un-natural to have units appearing !
