GO1 - The Tsarina

I apologize, I must drop out. I no longer have CivIV installed after switching to my new computer...
There is this thing called "Reinstalling" :p

Thanks for keeping this going, everybody! I'll just go and update the roster...

Yeah i know  I will see what i can do tomorrow

Is this dead? Should we skip HJ's turn? Should we force HJ with a shotgun to update?
Questions, questions, questions!

I'll PM him. If I don't get a reply by this time tomorrow I'll skip him this round.

OK, that means woopdeedoo is up.

No probs

Ok, so I had a look at the save. I think we need to attack Hannibal. He is below us tech-wise and is only inhabiting land that should be ours. First half of set: ferry units around to get a SoD together. Second half: DoW Hannibal and attack.

I can play tomorrow morning about 11am (GMT+2) if the roster agrees. Please feel free to add your thoughts.

Sounds fine by me. Bring any of the Swordsmen that we might have built, along with plenty of Macemen and Catapults.

Once you have 4 to 5 Galleys full of units, go ahead and attack and drop them off outside of one of his Cities. Take down his Cities one by one.

The 5th Galley and possibly a newly built Galley or two can shuttle-in late-arriving reinforcements.

I would use roughly a 5:3 ratio of Swords+Maces:Cats.

Combat promotions are often just as good or better than City Raider promotions, so I would tend to promote up the Combat line.

Don't forget to bring along our Chariot Supermedic (say, in the 5th Galley). The last that I saw him, he was Fortified outside of a City a few squares roughly south of Alex's ex-capital.

So, I have played. Was not too hectic. We got a GE and a GS. Both are snoozing in Moscow. Optics was self-researched and we also have Galleons now. We met Cyrus and made the following trades:

And, to remove the angry and diseased faces:

We now also know a bit more of the world:

Other than that, I have also settled two more cities and spent a lot of time clearing that pesky jungle. Sorry the report isn't very detailed but nothing really happened!

Here is the save:

How is the build-up of troops for attacking Hannibal going?

We might as well make an Academy in our capital if we don't have an Academy there yet. If we do have an Academy there (check the City screen to find out), then the Great Person Farm would be a good spot to put an Academy.

Speaking of the Great Person Farm, have we hired Scientists, Merchants, and an Engineer there yet or are we still growing the City?

Does Cyrus have Iron already?
- If no, he doesn't have Iron, then I could cancel that Copper trade as soon as possible.
- If yes, he already does have Iron then giving him Copper is a great move, as he will not gain from it while he will trade a lot away to get it.

We will have to make the choice between obsoleting The Colossus and getting Galleons. Since our plan is to go to war with Hannibal, then I think that we will want to tech toward Galleons and thus should self-tech Astronomy.

That said, we SHOULD be attacking before we learn Astronomy if we have already started to build up some troops--we can upgrade our Galleys to Galleons inside of one of the Cities that we capture from Hannibal.

If we don't have many troops built up (don't forget to send in the Super Medic Chariot if it hasn't already been sent in, along with the Swordsmen that we hopefully built for their free Shock promotion), then we might be too busy building troops to be able to attack pre-Astronomy, but we should still try to attack soon if we can build up a force of 4 to 5 Galleys and sufficient units to fill the Galleys.

Badly. Sorry, I'm afraid troop builds weren't too hectic. We have a mini-stack in the Northern city but will need many more.

Maybe use the GE for a WoW?

Yes he does.

I spent some cash doing just that.

I believe we have enough units to consider attacking. The next TS can complete the build up and the one after that can attack.

Hmmm, given that we already have Astronomy and have a bit of a tech advantage, now might be a great time to launch a Golden Age.

Do we still have a Great Artist fortified somewhere? The F5 screen should tell us what unit types we have. If yes, a Great Artist could be used to launch a Golden Age.

We didn't already launch a Golden Age using a Great Person yet, did we? If not, then we'll only need 1 Great Person to launch our Golden Age. If we did, then we'll need 2 Great People to launch our Golden Age.

Anyway, the idea of the Golden Age would be to:
a) Run Representation (which we should already be running) and Caste System, then hire a ton of Representation-enchanced Scientists across our empire
AND
b) BEFORE the Golden Age ends (1 turn left on the Golden Age), switch from Representation -> Police State (for building Military Units) and Caste System -> Slavery (for whipping a building on the SECOND turn that a captured City comes out of revolt)

A Golden Age gives us extra Great People Points, which is another reason why we will want to hire Scientist Specialists everywhere on the first turn of the Golden Age, after ensuring that we are running both of the Representation (improved Specialists) and Caste System (infinite Scientist Specialists) Civics.

A Golden Age also removes the Anarchy period (in BtS only) when switching between Civics, so we'll take advantage of this fact on the first turn of the Golden Age as well as on the last turn of the Golden Age.

Most Cities should probably finish off their current build items and then either switch to building Barracks + land units or Galleons.

As for teching, I'm not sure where we're at, but one option could be to first research Engineering and then, once we have learned Engineering, click on the Military Tradition tech--the tech that enables Cuirassiers (not Military Science, which enables Grenadiers). We won't get Gunpowder in this manner but we will unlock the Taj Mahal (for another future Golden Age) and we can always trade Gunpowder from an AI.

If no AI gets Gunpowder, then the situation is even better, as we can stick with using Macemen, Pikemen, Catapults, Trebuchets, possibly some Longbowmen (Archers for now if we don't know Feudalism), and won't have to face Musketeers.

We do NOT want to learn Feudalism if we don't already know it until every AI that we have met learns it, as learning it ourselves will just speed up other AIs learning it. Longbowmen in our hands won't help us very much but Longbowmen in the hands of more AIs will slow us down.

If we can generate a Golden Age without needing to use up our Great Engineer, then we should save the Great Engineer to build the Taj Mahal.

Getting Engineering before going after Military Tradition will be important, since Engineering unlocks Trebuchets, Pikemen, and gives our units faster travel times over our Road network, which allows our newly-built units to arrive at our Galleons that much faster.

We should aim to capture all of Hannibal's Cities. However, for future AIs, we could consider trying to capitulate them, as by then most or all AIs will know Feudalism anyway, meaning that we can learn it at that time for capitulations. Hannibal is close enough to our core empire that we might as well aim to keep his good Cities for ourselves (feel free to raze a really junky City as any more than 3 Cities per island can start to cost us a LOT in terms of Colonial Maintenance fees).
