what is inflation?

Currently, my civilization costs 203 gold per turn + 94 (!) gold per turn in inflation. What is inflation, in game terms, and what can I do about it?

It is a steadily growing loss of gold that increases with turn count (although its off in the very early game). There nothing you can do about it. Right now.

I believe in Beyond the Sword you can found a Federal Reserve Bank to decrease inflation.
