Trusting that anyone who loves civ must be an upstanding young person and will not cause me to be fired, I have the following proposition to make to any interested civfanatic:
My grade 11 English class in Japan (ESL, beginner level) is doing a unit on email--composing letters, etc. The next step is to write to a penpal. The whole point of this exercise is cross-cultural communication, so if English isn't your best language don't worry. These kids have never so much as made a long-distance phone call, and making a friend outside of Japan would really be exciting for them. On your end, you'll just have to agree to write them a couple of short emails over the next couple of weeks (which I'll monitor for grading purposes). After that, it's your call to continue or not.
So anyway, if you're around the same age (high school) and would like to make a friend in Japan AND you promise to be nice send me an email (marukosu@yahoo.com) with a brief self introduction in easy English and I'll pass it along to them. Including a scanned picture of you, your family, your dog, your school, or anything like that would be great.
Let me stress once again the nice part. We're talking a small island community here.
Thanks,
Marcos (no, they don't call me Mr. goodbye_mr_bond )
