An Island Race

@ Estarrioll

Do you want to take you last two turns before I post a got it? I don't mind waiting till you finish your 20.

No, it's OK, go on. :)

The main thing about SP is that it will cost much mote after we settle another city. We should either spend it before settling 1S of dyes or postpone settling until Commerce is available.

And I can't decide what to buy - Tradition, Liberty or Honor. Tradition bonuses are weak, Liberty is not useful for us and Honor is useless cause there are no barbs near us.

I think we should consider bribing a cultural SC - we are almost barbs considering culture income.

Cool beans. Got it.

Will wait for more input. Esspecially on the SP front.

I think settling a city ASAP is more important than SP costs rising.

That is a nice spot grandad. I'd be surprised if it's still available by the time we can embark though. We can buddy up with Venice for their food and horses.

OK so my plan is:

Tech, Optics > Iron

Settle the Dye site.

Burn some gold on the new city and maybe throw some cash at Venice or Oslo.

Aim to get a settler ready for when Optics is ready and hope for that city site in Arabia.
Run a sci spec or two for the GSci to sling to....

Will play tomorrow if people are happy with this plan.

IHT

I Found York.
Spoiler :

I buy a Work Boat and set the city to build a Monument

1

We gain a SP which I bank for later.

2

Philo is in. I switch to Optics.
Spoiler :

We enter the Classical Era.
Spoiler :

We meet Hanoi.

I decide that we should form a PoC with Askia and he agrees! What a Lovely world.

3

Monty wants a research agreement but I turn him down as I want the gold for CS diplomacy.

4

We meet Monaco.

5

We lose Rio as an Ally but I don't spend the gold on them as I'd rather use it for Venice.

6

Ramesses wants a PoC so I agree. We also OB.
Spoiler :

We meet Oda of Japan.
Spoiler :

7

We find the Great Barrier Reef and get +2 :)
Spoiler :

The Hanging Gardens are BIAFAL.

8

London, Lib > Settler. We start to run a sci.

I give Venice 500 gold and we become Allies. This nets us their Horses.

9

We Meet Dublin.

10

Optics > Iron Working
Spoiler :

11

Deal with Harum ends. I don't renew as we have the Horses from Venice ATM.

12

Askia asks for a PoS against Ramesses. Its a polite no from us.

13

Just as a scouting warrior arrives at my proposed site Harum settles a city stealing half OUR site.

14

We find the rock of Gibraltar. I reckon this is an English must have ;)
Spoiler :

York, Monument > Spear.

15

Oda enters the Medieval era.

16

We OB with Harum so I can try to extract our Warrior to the south (lots of barbs inc a Tri to the north).

17

London, Settler > Worker.

Egypt and the Songhia sign a RA. So much for the PoS Askai wanted. I just don't get the diplo in this game.

We gain an SP which I save.

I decide to stop here as we're back on a multiple of 5 :shifty: and we have a settler to decide were to place.

More discusion in my next post.

agree on dropping to 10.

I'll open the save tomorrow.

How many cities do we really want/need? All we really need to do on an island map is sail to their capitals and invade, right? This leads to further discussion of how we get the amphibious promotion for our troops. Seems like we'll also need lots of frigates etc.

I see iron as the bottleneck to our ambitions. I'd like at least six iron-monger troops. Can we build pikes without iron?

More tomorrow.

OT - @GD, level 6 FNV

We need to scout the island to the SE, amphibious requires Shock I+Drill I so we'd need a barracks+armory to get amphibious out the gate.

I'm not too sure on the diplo on Civ5 either, can't tell how the AIs feel towards each other.

Settle where the warrior is atm, send that warrior to scout the SE island. we need Iron, we can build pikes with CS which a GS can bulb. For caravels we need Compass>Theo>Education which unlocks Astro for caravels, faster embarkment and embarked units to cross ocean(<though we don't need that as other islands are accessable)

@ Admiral. Got to wait till pay day for FNV. Only another couple of weeks.

Cripp7 has pretty much said all I was thinking.

In addition to our capital I think we need at least 2 dedicated military pumps. One for land units and one for navel. Also at least one food city to keep our tech rate going with pop sci, sci specs and GSci. Maybe a couple of gold cities? I guess it depends how long we see this game lasting.

We'll reveal iron in 4 turns and then find out just how bottlenecked we're going to be. Would settling 1W of the warrior be better? It would make the new city coastal. We could then build/buy lighthouses etc. to make the coastal/sea tiles more valuable. And research after iron comes in? Straight to Compass or grab archery in 3 turns to help keep barb boats from messing with us?

Archer > Compass seems ok. Its only 3 turns after all. Also We need Archery to open up the Math line for Siege and Courthouses.

I agree 1W for coastal. Also keeps the forest so its got a bit more production.

Come on Iron.

Triemes aren't to expensive to buy.

Oh yer when we hook Dye up it will compete a quest for Venice so don't pay them off to stay allies just yet.

Well, maybe we should discuss some grand strategy first - cause I personally don't feel we are going anywhere. :D

I mean we need some goal - and there is none for now. We are not even sure about our SPs yet. Let's make some plan, team. Are we nice to AIs? Are we going for expansion? Is it culture all the way? Should we burn cities down and slaughter the innocent? :crazyeye: Let's set some direction and go for it. What do you think?

P.S. I've tried to invent something to propose, but failed. Hope you have better imagination. :)

Ok. Overarching strategy.

Umm.

I guess the starting point is how do we want to win.

I would say ignore Cultural, leaving Sci, Conquest and Diplo. Unless we want to grind our way right through the tech tree we can probably count out Sci victory. This Leaves Diplo and Conquest.

Conquest is obviously the most overtly millitary route and probably the easiest route we can take.

Diplo isn't overtly millitary but will undoubtedly involve some war due to city state missions etc. Also because its all about city state votes we can still spank some AIs.

After this brief analysis I would vote Diplo as we get to see more of the tech tree than just spanking out a Conquest Victory and it would invlove manipulating one of the new game features, City States.

Using this as our guide I would say we can start to plan our SPs.

I would say we want to take most of Commerce and Patronage, then maybe select some of Rationalism followed by Order and/or Freedom.

I also guess that we will need to go for gold more than usual and also get a food city out so we can farm GPs for city state diplo.

What do you guys reckon?

Idiot's Strategic Thinking:

We're an island nation with supercharged naval movement IIRC. As noted above, I think we need to secure as much domestic iron as we can. I don't want to annex/puppet lot's of cities because then we have to garrison/defend them. I guess what I'm saying is to be very selective about what we settle or conquer.

I really haven't explored the SPs beyond Liberty and Commerce. In this game, filling out the Commerce makes sense.

Conquest:
all we really need to do on an island map is sail to their capitals and invade, right? This leads to further discussion of how we get the amphibious promotion for our troops. Seems like we'll also need lots of frigates etc.
We'll need lots of escorts for our slow moving invaders. I think we take the caps and then make peace if we're going this route.

Diplo: I have no objection, but I haven't tried it and will defer to the team on how to best exploit the city states. I'll reserve further comment until I know where the iron is (sorry, been that way since C3) :crazyeye: :salute:
