Capto Iugulum

Only see him as Brandenburg in this thread. I see he claimed Argentina in the interim thread, but he isn't on the list here...

If he is Argentina, I guess I'll look for another country. I was hoping for Argentina, but any country that won't be food for it's neighbors would be good. :)

The Franco-Burgundian Confederacy is present.

We would like to reaffirm from the outset that we consider ourselves allied in military and economic terms with the Netherlands, with Austria, with Scandinavia, with the Papacy, and with Genoa.

I am Brandenburg

Welcome aboard Dright, and I am back. Once more I'd like to remind you all that orders will be due for Update 0 and that Update 0 deadline is the next coming Wednesday.

To Brittany
From the Franco-Burgundian Confederation

Your political position is currently ambiguous; we would appreciate a clarification of it. If you want neutrality and to enshrine that in a generally recognised treaty, that would probably be generally acceptable; if you want alliance with us, we are quite willing to be your ally and to guarantee your independence; but either way we would be most appreciative of a statement of your intentions.

OOC:

EQ, will Update 0 be an update in which we can spend and bank income and carry out new projects and build stuff and research, or will it just be an update to set the scene so that spending can start in Update 1?

Genoa is pleased to hear Franco-Burgundian declaration of an alliance!

ooc: I will do my best with the orders :S

We're sure our Spanish allies would be in support of the United States extending an offer to join our alliance to you, for mutual protection in these dangerous times.

To: Mayan Republic, United States of New Spain, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina
From: Empire of Spain

We know that our relationships with many of you (especially with the Mayan Republic and the United States of New Spain) may have not been as good as they could be, but nonetheless we wish to make all of you an offer that will, hopefully, be accepted.

All of us have a common past, that of the Catholic Kings and their descendants, the ones who have led our nation through thick and thin for more than four hundred years.

Several of you fought for years to gain your freedom, and we let you go, with sadness for the loss of our brothers. Others gained it pacifically, and we chose to accept it rather than be embroiled in greater turmoil. Either way, all of us still have a common past. And we hope that all of you will accept this.

We suggest the formation of several Hispanic organizations. Most of them would be tied to our culture, and thus we would form the Academy of Spanish Language, the Hispanic Academy of History, the Hispanic Academy of Arts... We would also be interested in a Hispanic Universitarian System, by which the degrees given by the universities in all countries that joined this system would be accepted in every other country as an equivalent degree (thus, a Doctor in Medicine for the University of Quito would be accepted as a Doctor in Medicine in Spain, and viceversa). Another suggestion would be the formation of a better trading relationship between all of us, with the aim of lowering all trading barriers and helping wares and goods travel between all the countries that join far more easily.

Of course, you are not being compelled to join all of the proposed organizations or pacts. However, we would be grateful if you, at least, joined the academic organizations, so that the culture of our common ancestors is not lost in the future, and may be remembered by all.

Let it be known that the Empire of Spain will send several of its best sportsmen to the city of Athens for the celebration of the Olympic Games that will be held this summer.

OOC: We can presume that football (or its equivalent) has become a sport expanded enough to warrant its addition to the Olympics, right? I might make a story about the Spanish Imperial Football League, which would be quite fun.

Update 0 is a full update, not just a scene setter.

As for soccer, there's no reason it's very prevelant here. I leave that up to the various nations, though I vote that the United States continues to hate it, as tradition requires.

To: Spain
From: Mayan Republic

We have no desire to be associated with you, as we recall still to this day the atrocities you performed against our people.

To: Spain
From: Colombia

As long as you remain associated or allied with the United States, we will not join in any organization led by the perfidious Spanish monarchy.

To: Spain
From: Venezuela

We are interested in the proposal for the Hispanic Universtarian System, but are not willing to fully associate our universities and educational system with you. We are not willing to reduce tariffs or alter our trade with you either at this stage in our relationship, though we may be willing to consider it for the future.

To: Spain
From: Paraguay

We cannot in good conscience align or sign any such treaties as long as you remain allied with the United States of America.

To: Spain
From: Uruguay

We are willing to discuss new trade ties, but at this time we are not willing to link our educational systems.

What about the academical organizations? Those have nothing to do with politics or anything, just our common past, so, beyond petty reasons, there is nothing that stops you from joining them. We do not know why Colombia would presume that said organizations would be led by the Spanish Emperor, as, since all nations would be members, the leaders could easily be people from any of the member states. We also desire to ask what has Spain done to Colombia for them to call our Emperor "perfidious".

Brazil cannot in good faith allow the Spanish to use cultural imperialism on the free peoples of South America. We have fought alongside our brothers to curb imperialism of all sorts, to stop tyrants and to insure the individual rights of every man, woman and child on this continent. We ask you kindly to cease all attempts at reforming your lost empire on this continent. These people have fought and died to be free of you and your ally the United States and, while we cannot speak for them, we can logically deduce that your grabs at the cliff edge before your empire falls into obscurity will go unaided by the free peoples of the world.

Sincerely,
Prime Minister Manuel Ferraz de Campos Sales in the name of the People and Her Majesty

We fail to see what our proposal for a cultural organization has to do with imperialism. What the Empire of Spain is attempting to do has nothing to do with any "attempts at reforming our lost empire". It has nothing to do with restoring political control. It is about helping preserve the culture and language. Politics has nothing to do with culture. Please note that such an organization would have Spain in the minority, as the number of former Spanish colonies is greater than one.

Perhaps it is that you are afraid that the nations of South America will start liking Spain more than Brazil, which is a possibility. However, this has nothing to do with that. The only purpose of our suggestion is the restoration of the culture that ties us together, because, as much as some may wish to deny it, all of America south Rio Grande save for Brazil, some islands in the Caribbean and the Guyanas, owes its current existence to Spain.

Perhaps it is that you think that Spain's government will control the cultural organizations. Far from it. Said organizations, while they would get funding from Spain's government, all other governments would put funding as well, and they would be led by cultural personalities from all member nations.

Or perhaps it is jealousy that it was the Spanish main cultural personalities that had this grand idea and not Brazilian ones.

Hopefully, it will be just a case of misunderstanding by part of Brazil. Because it is the only reasonable possibility apart from any that was born out of Brazilian bad intentions.

Sincerely,
Carlos Martínez Recio-Gordo, Minister of Education and Culture of the Empire of Spain.

P.S: The reason why it is me, and not the Imperial Prime Minister the one to take the quill and write this letter, is because the Imperial Government, to whom the Brazilian letter was sent to, feels Brazilian worries are completely unfounded, and thus it should not require the collaboration of all of the government to assuage said worries.

These nations owe you nothing. Where was Spain when the Americans invaded New Spain? Where was Spain when they set their sights on Colombia or Panama? I'd remind Spain that Brazil and half of the nations you so rudely claim to be your offspring have fought for decades to gain liberty and freedom from tyrannical empires such as yours. The people of the Americas will never forget your invasions of the Aztec lands, nor your supporting of dictators over the rightful, elected government of the United States. Brazil, sir, has stood by its friends and freed nations from the grasps of tyranny. An abusive father with abusive friends is not welcome in the house of the free.

We do concede that have done nothing to support the South American nations when they were attacked by the United States. However, we also wish to point out that Brazil did nothing when the United States attacked and invaded Panamá and New Spain, and only intervened when their interests in Colombia were put at risk. So do not attempt to cast us as the villains when it is obvious that you are not white clean. And you cannot deny that, if it were not for Spain, the nations of New Spain, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Perú, Chile, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay would not exist as they are. So, while they do not owe us anything in a physical sense, their existence is owed to us as a child's life is owed to the mother that carried him for nine months before giving birth. Perhaps New Spain and others fought against Spain later in their lives, but nations such as Perú received their independence and still maintain great ties to Spain, like a child who still loves and visits the mother that gave birth to him, instead of abandoning her.

If, despite all the proof that clearly shows that said organization would only exist to coordinate the efforts of all nations, Brazil still believes it is a tool of Spain's government to manipulate other nations, then we only feel pity towards Brazil and its people.

We tremble in fear of what life must be in Brazil if the policemen's attitude towards real proof runs in pair to that of its government's attitude towards the current situation.

You burned the coast of Brazil, sank our fleet and threatened to endanger the economic stability of the entire continent in order to defend tyranny. You still defend tyranny. The Brazilian people are free, and under those freedoms we have fought and died for our brothers. You have done nothing but take the cowards route. If the Spanish continue to openly support the false government in the United States and try to corrupt the liberated peoples of the Americas with wishful imperial tactics, then the government of Brazil will have no other choice than to cease all diplomatic contact with Madrid. For generations you put down free thinkers and only after your people rose up against you in civil war did Spain accept the rightful democratic system. Spain is a dying empire. Let go of what you have lost. Your former conquests have become far greater than you. Be happy that you have survived long enough to see that day.

We want to stay neutral. We will sign a generally recognized treaty if this allows our continued neutrality in the tensions we see beginning to form. We do not want to be a battleground between two empires.

1) We were at a war. We were attempting to get you out of it as fast as possible. Maybe our methods were not very civil, but it was war.
2) The coward's route would have been to pay you after the incident sparked by the United Kingdom's attack on our fleet, and where the Brazilian ships got involved by pure chance. We still cannot believe you still pin the blame on us for such an incident.
3) We do not defend tyranny. We just maintain diplomatic relations with the United States. We hope that they will change at some point.
4) We still do not understand why you are still harping on a point that we have clearly stated several times is completely false.
5) Brazil seems to be blowing this situation completely out of proportion, considering that it started because Spain wanted to establish a group of cultural, apolitical organizations.
6) We would like to know who has misinformed you so much. Either way, we wish to correct this clearly incorrect information: it was in fact Emperor Carlos VI, and his son Felipe IX, who fought for the reforming of the Empire of Spain into what is currently now: one of the two greatest democracies in the world, next to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, whom we hold in great esteem as a worthy opponent to the Empire of Spain. The civil war that happened shortly after the death of Emperor Carlos VI was instigated by the reactionaries who desired to keep the old order, and Emperor Felipe IX fought and led so that Spain advanced along the path Carlos VI had drawn and designed with the help of his advisors. And, once more, the reactionaries fought to prevent Spain's advance when the Spanish Constitution was established, and once more the Emperor and Empire fought against them, so that constitutionalism and democracy prevailed. In fact, nowadays all of the Empire has representation in the Imperial Parliament. All regions of the Empire have autonomy over many matters that only concern them. All political positions of importance are chosen by the people. Please, make your research before saying anything.
7) We have indeed let them go. Panamá, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, we let them go more than a century ago. New Spain left more than sixty years ago, and we let them go. We were bitter about the Mayans wanting to leave, but we still let them go. So, please, do not say something that is clearly untrue.
8) The former colonies may be great, we are not putting it in doubt. But, please, look well at things before casting such a dubious affirmation.
9) If the Brazilian policemen's attitude towards proof is equal to that of the Brazilian government... God save the Brazilian people.
