New NESes, ideas, development, etc

I will be publishing a pre-thread in the future containing all the details of the program as-is for the purposes of obtaining input and testers.

I am definitely on board with Iggy's random map, currently I'm sitting on the unused map from the map thread. I will use that if nothing else.

I am not as talented a sprite artist as Daftpanzer by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn't expect him to go out of his way to offer up some cool manipulations. I will probably consult him throughout the course of this process to crack open some nuts and bolts and probably get a few pointers on his sprite-editing procedures.

Diplomacy will continue unabated. Still waiting on orders.

@Iggy: You have received my specifications via #nes. I really appreciate it. :)

I have been working on designing the code for most of the afternoon and have finally achieved a product I can work from. I decided to abandon my approach of "gestalt army vs. army" as such for something a bit closer to Daft's model, namely regarding the mano-e-mano battles. Overall, I think it's a lot more balanced and consistent, and I've been able to reproduce some of the effects of battles from ZPNESV (not perfectly, for the element of randomness be strong with this one).

So here's some outputs to gnaw on, starting with recreations of The Second Battle of Libya-Egypt, The Battle of Finnkola, and The EPIC Seventh Battle of Karelia.

And they mirror the actual results with an acceptable amount of consistency across multiple trials, which leads me to believe this is a decently reliable system.

Anyway, so what's going on here: essentially two separate "armies" are constructed, and each unit in both armies gets one shot at the other side. So, a random opposing unit is selected for them to shoot at, and a few die rolls later and you have a hit or a miss - modified by appropriate saving throws involving armor, evasion, etc, all of which are borrowed in some capacity from Daft's ruleset.

There are still a few kinks to work out (don't ask me how that Medium Tank shot down that Bomber in Karelia, I have no idea), and I'm still working on fully integrating aerial support and naval combat, but for the most part I consider this to be a solid foundation. I will be adding on to this model and filing the other model away.

Because I don't really want to clutter up this thread with my crap, I'll be making a pre-thread eventually with the full low-down of how this works, and a work-in-progress of Daft's rules as I adapt and alter them. For the less-caring-about-numbers, there'll also be a sweet map and stuff and I guess opportunities for culture submissions.

How about this: having it so that they hit with the number of troops they started with at the beginning of the heat. I'm saying this because it looks like it would be heavily balanced towards player 1 who hits first.
Edit: Never mind. You incorporated that as well.

Land units can hit air units with a 6 after the air unit failed in its attack IIRC.

Yeah, 6's are an auto-hit in most cases. Forgot about that. Typically, however, there is a penalty to hitting air units if you don't have any AA attack.

I posted the rules for hordes here. As of now I have rules for civilized states, organizations (religious or secular) and Hordes. I have several possible organizations and hordes available.

These rules are new, so I just want to ask if they look good (to people who won't just butter me up). :)

Would it be interesting for a mixup in this subforum, with a TBNES: Tournament style story based NES like one that we had earlier? Or is that something that should be held off for awhile?

World War Three
In an alternate world where nationalism and fascism were not as rejected post-World War Two, four major power blocks have emerged. The Nationalists, obsessed with patriotism and power, comprise of the USA, Britain, France, and their ally, the People's Republic of China primarily. Protesting against the American fascism, several states have declared independence, such as the Great Lakes and California. The EU has been dissolved, leading to it only being left in several regions in Central Europe, creating the German Union. The Democrats of the world, concerned with safety and peace, are prominently lead by the German Union, Italy, Canada, and the growing Democratic Republic of China. In the poorer parts of the world, Communism has been making a true comeback, with large representatives in Ethiopia, Yugoslavia, the New United Soviet Socialist Republics in Eastern Russia, and Sweden. Finally, there are the various powers ruled by absolute or religious control, though not united, they have enough brainwashed citizens to earn the title of Derelicts. These nations include Korea, and many African states. Then there are some unaffiliated nations caught in the crossfire, who had previously relied entirely on trade, while greedy powers look for their wealth. These nations include the Atlantic Trading State, Japan and the various states of the Middle East. More details available via interest. Start date is roughly between 2025-2050. Note that the two big power blocks, Nationalists and Democrats, are to start the game at war. Players should make up valid casus bellis as to why.

Fresh World Start: 350 AD
A fresh start for the time period, with only China, and the Eastern and Western Roman Empires being present on the map beforehand.
As posted in a thread I started, not realizing this existed. So, any thoughts, critique, general interest?

For World War 3, preset alliance blocs may or may not be a bad thing. Perhaps you might want to do it INES style? (i.e. some nations are predisposed towards each other with Islamic, Communist and Democratic nations quickly sketched, while player action sketchs out the details, and soon alliances and such form) The part I like though, are the nuetrals. Having a few Italies around that are technically on no one's side and which all court is a very good idea.

For 350AD, will you consider including that Indian Empire and the Parthian Empire? The way you make it sound like is that we will play as barbaric groups; will the Empire be playable or will they be NPC? Can we play as Imperial Provinces or Foendari (landed mercenaries)?

For 350 AD
I will definitely include the Parthians and Indians. You may choose to play as the Roman Empire. As for Imperial Provinces, I could implement a system similar to Crusader Kings, in that you can play from a lowly count type to the national ruler. And if you want to, you can always play as a vassalized mercenary organization.
World War Three
Well, you can't really have a world war without power blocks, so I'm not so sure about that. And yes, neutrals are awesome. Some power blocks, such as the Communists and Derelicts, may side with whomever they choose. In fact, I was hoping for a Yugoslavian alliance with the Democrats. And you can always switch sides later. ;)

I'd definitely play either. The WW3 one sounds most interesting. Roughly what level of technology would we be playing with (present day?)

Would definitely be interested in a WWIII scenario and everything. Much better than a fresh start at the moment.

@Crezth, just wanted to say I feel very happy about your latest project, it is an honour indeed! Very interesting! What programming language/thingy are you using??
