ideology unhappiness is impossible and horrible

adecoy95, you're doing something wrong. If another player is dominating your culture and you don't want to switch ideology, you either defend your culture by focusing more on your own culture or take out the offending civ. If neither works, you should lower your difficulty levels instead of complaining here.

There are a few solutions to this

- Get the World Congress to vote your ideology as the World Ideology. It ends up negating pretty much any unhappy you would otherwise deal with from ideologies and instead put that unhappiness on the AI of other ideologies. Needs support from city states and other AI following your ideology to accomplish, but its the best way

- Build Tourism buildings/Culture buildings. I had a game where I was running 400 tourism per turn and I was still getting unhappiness in the 1800s because of the AI was getting 700 tourism per turn. I was suffering 20 unhappy per turn [But only me... even though the other AI had less culture and less tourism than me and the Tourism leader... hmm... but I built more culture buildings/landmarks and reduced that unhappy a little] If a cultural/tourist civ is giving you problems, take them out

- Buy luxuries, might be a painful solution, but with the amount of gold you have in the late-game you shouldn't mind paying 5-20 gpt for a luxury. If need be add in a copy of your lux to + gold

How many cities do you have? If you're going wide (lots of cities), that's probably part of the problem. Going wide too soon will really put you behind the curve.

Are you building archaeologists and digging up Antiquity sites?

Are you putting Great Works of Writing/Art/Music into buildings that best suit them? Getting the theme bonuses?

Are you playing on Deity or something? On my King games I'm always the tourism/culture leader, it makes it so that I can't win any other way. I want to win domination but my culture always takes over everyone before that. How are you getting 40 unhappiness??

Oh and there's a way to reduce unhappiness artificially, it's call playing on Settler difficulty.

Crush the opposing civ with ideology that you don't like, they can't promote tourism if their cities is razed to the ground ;3

Or adopt the ideology you don't want.

played several games now, and no matter what, the ai always wrecks me with ideology, causing me to get 40+ unhappiness, making end game totally unplayable, something needs to change

I had this happen playing as Korea, but, I kind of liked it. It felt quite fluid/natural. I had gone Autocracy for a late-game tech domination and was dismantling Japan when my cities began to revolt. I was 30+ unhappiness all of a sudden. In a way this makes sense though doesn't it?

So, I almost changed ideologies, but instead powered through it (while dealing with barbarians cropping up in my capital). I switching my focus to happiness/culture, held off on conquering a few cities, and eventually was able to take down the cultural powerhouse and ensure my victory.

The most important thing to remember, I've found, is you don't get much culture from culture building alone, and you really need to stock them with great works, and get the bonuses from trading great works. Warmongering is actually a fun way to do this, because you can steal the great works of a conquered city and bring them back to your museums. Not unlike Germany making off with all the great art of Europe during WWII.

i dont have any of the auto saves left unfortunately so i dont really know what to do at this point, i certaintly dont feel like going 350+ turns into the modern age just to experience this all over again.

tried to do this the first time, got attacked on two sides and just quit since there was nothing i could have done at that point.

digs provide a whopping useless 2 tourism, that's nothing compared to the 100+ the ai always gets, i usually sit around 30-70 tourism even in the latest era and am usually one of the last to arrive to it due to my crazy amounts of unhappiness.

the first game i played i had 11 cities, and was doing ok most of the game with happiness until the ideologys came around, the next game i had six, and the last game i played that was co-op i had 8 cities four of them being puppets (i played austria)

switching ideology's is never an option for me because i lose the specialists bonus to unhappiness.

and im not sure why you say it feels fluid and natural, i would rather get attacked by 100 xcom squadrons than have this unhappiness influence happen in my cities, it feels awful and cuts through all difficulty levels

Another possibility, if you have a number of city state allies and can bribe a few AIs, is to try to get your ideology declared the World Ideology. This should bolster your stability by improving public opinion and pressuring other civs.

This is a great way of doing it too. If you're not the top city-state ally person, then pick the ideology of the one who is and do the same thing. It's a great way to knock other civs down a few notches.

one of the ai was alexander, and he chose order, there is no way in a million years i would be able to top his vote pool

er, quoted the wrong person, but sure, changing ideology fixes everything, except i lose all the bonuses i want and am forced to play with a bonus pool i dont desire at all, which is not fun

This topic is saddening.

You are asking for help with a feature of the game, and while you know what is causing it ( you are too low of culture/tourism with your current ideology) you refuse to fix the problem.

If you did not focus on your culture game AT ALL this is your punishment. All of the tenets are pretty good. Switching won't hurt you in the long run and it will get rid of your unhappiness.

You aren't going to be able to recover enough to get out of that hole without switching. Learn from your mistakes, switch, and don't let yourself be culturally overpowered. Learn from your mistakes.

I forced 2 AI civs to switch ideologies in my game due to unhappiness.

Its a good system and far from impossible and horrible.

I guess if there's a country that has too much cultural dominance over yours, you could always invade them and put a stop to it :king:.

Plus, if you lower the tourism multipliers it should help.

1. Stop trading with them.
2. Don't open your borders to them.
3. Don't share the same religion as them.

Do these things and the other country should have less influence. Isolation vs. Globalization.

will this work retroactively?

i understand what your saying, but i am sitting down going, hey, i want to play around with the bonuses in the freedom ideology, and no game i have played yet, on any difficulty, seems to be able to let me, the combined pressure from all the other civilizations, no matter what my tech level, forces me to play with some other one i neither want the bonuses from, nor need the bonuses from.

The problem with taking a different ideology AND going high tourism is that all your opponents will hate you.

I'm currently trying to finish a game as Venice. I went Freedom so I could buy my spaceship parts if needed (and for the happiness). Everyone else took order. I went high tourism, got the internet and everyone denounced me. I guess that and winning the vote for world religion :)

It's important to find a way to get those Artist/Musician/Writer Guilds down, and to make sure all those specialists get fed somehow. This is one reason why internal food trading can be very useful. Try to build enough buildings to have slots open for all your great works. And remember that all that culture from the great works can be used to accelerate border pops in cities that can house them, and stuff.

I have to agree with the person who commented immediately after your post and presumeably several other people.

If you're going to show absolutely zero flexability and adaptability and dogmatically stick to an ideology and a play style that may have even worked well before THEY CHANGED THE RULES OF THE GAME, then you have to expect that under the new rules, which you can't seem bothered to learn, you do less well.

I never have a huge problem with happiness as I trade extensively, prioritizing the finding and trading of luxuries, I spend a lot of time and effort courting the City States and outright buying them. I even in my second game of BNW took Autocracy because my one neighbor and thus most important trading partner took Autocracy. I basically never took Autocracy in the previous incarnations of Civ and I still do not see it as the best choice, but in some situations such as when your neighbor has to choose between attacking you and Germany and you go out of your way to be nice, to honor deals, to make fair trades, and to even follow the same ideology, funnily enough Carthage chose to attack Germany.

I ultimately won. It wasn't easy. I had to make choices all along the way, sometimes I didn't get to build what I wanted, sometimes I lost out on key hexes to Carthage, but I didn't invade them, there is no Culture Bomb anymore and I bided my time. I made Shinto the World Religion. I got as many delegate votes as I could and slowly while everyone else was busy fighting or trying to win the space race, I squeaked out a diplomatic victory.

I don't think the AI Major Powers have voted once for me to outright win, they also don't like it when you force a World Religion upon them. I have seen the AI's Major Powers vote for someone other than themselves to win diplomatically, but not in BNW. Now with 2 extra votes for losing each election, 2 votes for having the Holy city of the world relgion, 2 votes for following the World Ideology, plus votes from City States you can slowly build up the support you need, avoiding going to war and losing access to all the luxuries that make your people happy.

There are pleny of Ideology Tennants and Social Policies that make your population happy. Sometimes Aqueducts or Granaries or whatever can be made to produce happiness. I think rather than complain the game is broken you need to rethink your strategy, adapt, try a different ideology, try some different social policies, try a different opening, try not expanding quite so much, try trading and staying at peace with your closest neighbour, even if they are an autocrat.

Good luck!

I say fluid and natural because it seems like a natural consequence of the kind of game I was playing. I was a forceful dictator (autocracy) attempting to conquer the world, and the people saw the glory of the proletariat and hated me for it. :D But once I provided them enough distractions (through stadiums, pop music, ect.) they returned to loving their great leader.

Sometimes an ideological shift might be necessary though. Losing some ideology tenets is certainly a better option than having your cities revolt to your enemy. And is an easy thing to come back from. Sure you'll get a little more unhappiness from your specialists, but remember all that unhappiness from ideological pressure will go away.

What kind of victory condition are you going for? If you're forced to switch to order for instance, there's still plenty of tenet that'll aid in working toward a science victory, for instance. You just have to change up your strategy a little. BNW seems to focus on getting rid of working lock-step in strategies developed from the start and force the player to be more flexible and respond to changing situations.

I guess that and winning the vote for world religion :)

The AI does not take kindly to you forcing your religion down their throats. I got control of the World Congress / UN and everyone but Japan was my friend. I nominate my relgion, I get told by everyone there are better ways to settle our differences. But I have the votes, and you get 2 more votes for having the Holy City of the World Relgion, so I vote it through single handily.

Every Civ even Ghandi immediately denounced me, even though we had been friends and Venice was the threat to the World.

Now Japan is gone and Venice is at war with everyone it seems, but I'll never be as popular as I was before forcing through a World Relgion...

I always want more votes, you need them as City States can be conquered or bought.
