remote game assistance

I'm looking for a way that I can help my mom played her Civilization V games. We've tried observer mode, but that falls far short of what is necessary to really know what is going on in the game.

What can we do to make this possible? Do they have plans to improve observer mode? Are there any screen sharing tools that will not get completely bogged down by Civ 5? It seems that Google+ hangouts are not really up to the challenge, at least on her computer.

No ideas, eh? I guess I shouldn't be surprised given that this is probably not a really common situation.

I do, however, think it's common for families to play this game together, and I find it very disappointing that the game does not really support that very well. Do you have any recommendations on that front? It seems that whoever chooses the lowest difficulty setting dictates how the game plays, which is no fun for the rest of us.
