Rome

Legions rule classical and beyond. By the time the AI gets long-swords the legions are so promoted as to not make any difference. Fast roads. Liberty & Honor. Conquer the nearest 2 or 3 civs unless one is a wonder producer, then save him for later.

By 1AD, the game is won, it's just a slow roll to science or go full domination. Happiness is the limiting factor.

I have played all the civs and give them another try now and again, but I always roll back to Rome. Second favorite is a tie between France & Mongols, but I hate waiting until the Renaissance to get started.

I play on Immortal.

I voted Japan for Bushido. Being able to attack at full strength all the time is a useful, solid ability that requires no gimmicks to use. Simply just destroy your enemies in a neverending wave of units.

Looks like I'm the only one who voted Korea, I love their UA and running a specialist economy with wonder spans, and the hwacha makes my cities impenetrable.

Actually voted for Polynesia for the challenge, Maori statues given something different. Absolutely useless on maps with limited water though

I cast the 2nd vote for Polynesia. If you play small islands their UA is a killer and also for continents as you meet the other civs about 50 turns earlier than anyone else.

Their UU is great against barbs in early game.

And last but not least: I like the music

I just started to play Korea though and they have also great potential...could become my #2...

@ Poomer I think Rome is far better than average in comparison to all the others. The Legion is one of the best UUs in the game (can build roads/cheaper to upgrade/13-11 stronger combat than swordsman). Their UA is strong as well.

I just played a game of Rome and I must say I agree with your assessment. If you get enough iron Rome definitely is a top tier civ. I probably formed my initial opinion back when steel was so easy get (many patches ago) and swordmen units were not that good. Even though Legions don't have promotions that carry on when upgraded they stay relevant for a long time and build roads ability is surprisingly good.

I voted for Babylon, although I do play France and the Inca a lot.

I don't play a lot of other civs except for those three, but I've played them all at least a few times to try and see if there is a kick to the civ I especially like. For how I like to play the game, Babylon, France, and the Inca are the best. Babylon for the early acadamy, France for the early culture, and the Incas on hilly/mountain heavy maps.

France, excellent cultural bonus and 2 UU's which will give you the edge in the Renaissance and Industrial/Modern Era. Great civilization.

I'm a peaceful player. My favorites are Korea and Rome.

Korea's ability is amazing and the turtle ships kick butt. I obviously use them for scientific victories.

Rome I use for cultural victories.

Rome I use for domination victories. 25% for buildings already built in the capital...spreads around more if you have a lot more cities that are not the capital.

France, their UA lends itself well to any victory type.

Korea's UA is pretty awesome as well, but I'm not a fan of the Turtle Ship...

I'm number three.

Wayfinding gives the game another 'touch' I would like to add. They're different.

I voted for Korea, simply because I love how their UU's alow you to turte throughout the medieval and rennisance eras with ease. I also love the idea gaing extra science from specalists slots, which becomes very strong with the rationalisim policy. 7 science while generating GS's I'll take that for sure.:)

I play France almost exclusively. Lately I've been opening with Liberty to Citizenship and then getting a second and third city up fast while teching to National College. This approach leaves the Emperor AI's in the dust. I can win via late culture while leading in tech.

Voted Ottomans. They are not the best, but I had great games with them - and their flavor factor is really important for me. In each of those games I had large navy very quickly with small maintenance costs, while Janissaries helped me get all those Domination victories. I like Suleiman's music theme as well.

It may be fun to take full Patronage social policy tree with Greece and ally with every city state in the map but that is hardly optimal play nowadays.

Greece is one of the best civs to win Diplo with, actually, I think. After all, it becomes a lot cheaper, and you only need CS votes to win diplo...

Okay last question... How about Japan?

Warmongering is the way to go for Japan, obviously. It's a rather good UA if you are warmongering anyway, the Samurai is pretty good but the Zero isn't that good, IMHO - unless you like late-game warmongering.
