The Deity Challenge Line-up #19 - The Aztecs

T286 Science Victory. I think it would have been quite a bit faster if I had gone Tradition, but I went Liberty. More in the spoilers.

Spoiler :

Social Policy Order: Full Liberty, Opened Commerce, Full Rationalism, Mercantilism, Freedom to Spaceship Procurement.

Settled quickly in the order seen in the screen shot. I left a humble scout hanging out in the Marsh north of Teotihuacan ... blocked the Chinese for nearly 180 turns or somesuch.

Capital build order was focused on early growth (Monument, Granary, Caravan, Floating Gardens, Library, Oracle, NC). Somewhere in there Tlaleco's Settler. The Caravan went to China to speed time to Currency. Got Oracle and Petra in the T65/T68 timeframe.

3 city NC circa T78ish, followed by Texcoco to the North.

It was fun to try the "Petra Gambit" - Tlaleco was a monster city - but overall would have been much faster to do straight tradition. Hanging Gardens went on T78, so that could have been an option.

Never had a Religion, took Indonesia's and finally bought a Scientist at endgame.

I bought a few spaceship parts including the last.

Overall pretty straightforward once I had final science order prepped. Diplo was dicey until the 250s when I built two Atomic Bombs and left everyone afraid. Poland was a BEAST, but scared to death of my Nuclear Weapons.

@consentient
I have just found the PERFECT map with Brazil... (jungle start, sure, but in my playthrough I settled on turn 11!)
Let me know how I can get it to you...

I really think early game doesn't matter much with Brazil, you only need to survive long enough for their game to pick up.

But then again, I might have been a tad too lucky that one time :) Still, I really can't wait for the map to roll :)

I finished turn 217 with a classic 5 cities tradition. My mid game was rather average though with late secularism (T135) due to having lost a policy into commerce while having little culture.

Also I generated a Great Engineer due to a very early ToA. I'm not sure if it was beneficial or not, used it for big ben.

I think there's room for a 210ish. Turn unhappy in the last turn, I was at 1470bpt at my maximum.

Spoiler :
I basically just sat and turtled all game long. I took Order as my ideology but it was causing me -40 unhappiness, which I managed to barely surmount with trading strategics for luxes and buying a few city states. I switched to Freedom 3 turns before victory in order to take advantage of the ability to buy SS parts. Poland basically took over 2/3 of the world in the modern-atomic era. He DOWed me the turn I finished the spaceship, but it was too late. Plus I have mech infantry, XCOMs, and soon stealth bombers. If I was spending my money and production on military I think I could actually give him a run for his money in a fight, but my people are spacebound instead.

I have to say Acken's finish turn astounds me. I know there's room for a lot of improvement in my game but 217 is very impressive to me.

T287 Science victory(personal record :))

Spoiler :
Got hit with huge unhappiness by going freedom as the world was all autocratic except for my buddy Pacal. Poland was order but was forced to change. I had 12 or 13 of those little swords for preferred ideology(autocracy). Was at -8 happiness for about 15 turns all during a golden age so it countered the production loss.

Finished tradition, rationalism, 6 in freedom(buy spaceship parts), commerce(right side) and patronage opener. Built PT, SoL, Big Ben, Hubble, Neuschwantein in capital and Sydney Opera House, Cristo Redentor and Pentagon(upgrading those catapults to rocket artillery won't be cheap) in south city.

Poland took China and Morocco down, after taking Shanghai he used a citadel to steal my land in the south but then razed the city(pop 19) which gave me a free citadel. He then resettled the city, little confused why he razed it in the first place.

Yeah, you're not alone. I was told that having Public Schools up by T180 is a good benchmark, which I've met a few times. T190 Plastics was the next one, but I can't see how it can be done, frankly. Then to win less than 30 turns after Plastics? I'm scratching my head.

T190 plastics is what I got approximately. T180 schools is too late though. In that game it was around T160 and I took a detour to industrialisation. It takes around 25-30 turns to go from schools to plastics and from plastics to winning. Also I'd say around 50 from Edu to schools.

For that kind of finish time of course.

The post schools part is the easy one. Keep growing and borrow money to build your schools and 30turns later your labs. Keep stacking GSs, wait 8 turns after labs and bulb a few. Build Apollo + Hubble, bulb more, win.

T307 science

Spoiler :

Started 4 cities tradition, built 2 more after getting univeristies in core cities. I didn't get involved in any war, nor build any military units past ancient era. Babylon went very aggressive at start and took morrocco and mayas completly. That got China busy and kept me at peace.

Overall an easy game but still proud to win another deity :p

The more I play, the less surprised I am. With some more tweaking, more early growth (ToA and/or HG) and DEFINITELY earlier GS bulbing, even I could have finished well under 250, and that's an amazing finishing time

Acken, would you consider writing a guide to the pre-Ideology part. I mean, I feel I'm making good decisions with BO and techs between Philosophy and Scientific Theory, but I can never get to ST anywhere near as early as players like you.

As for bulbing, do you keep the GS waiting around until you use them? How many do you plant?

I mean, I've read other science guides, but none have your mathematical approach. When to build Guilds and when to build Cargo Ships etc. I'm sure the 100 turns difference must not be one thing I'm doing wrong, but loads.

Update to 152T

136T scientific theory
143T modern era through radio (freedom)

Besides that I lost LToP by one turn and have very small faith output (probably only one GS) rest things look good - will get plastic ~170T(with one GS) :)

I'd expect your headstart to bring you around 10turns faster than me so between 205 and 210. I'd be really interested to know your exact build for your first 80turns.

I see you take Chemistry + Fertilizer after schools, do you always ? Did you bulb schools in your game ? I bulbed neither schools nor labs in mine.

Lol and I thought 150T was pretty decent for ST on a good map such as this.

On a subject of BO questions, what do you guys prioritize from these (all cities):
Garden, National Epic (capital), Market/bank, Temple, Workshop, Amphitheater/Opera.

I have not done calculation if gardens and NE are really worth it.

Also workshops pretty much always before WF and guilds asap.

Basically build science and gold buildings in your expos, then happiness and try not to overbbuild because maintenance is a headache

Went 5 city tradition, and Order, although I think freedom might have been faster.

Early Game
Spoiler :
Stole a worker from Indonesia, the Maya, and Sofia (got 3 total from Sofia). First expansion was to the north. Mountain, hill, river, marble, old faithful, which is basically free lux, I couldn't pass on it. Second expansion was to SE for the triple lux spot.

Got stone circle pantheon from a ruin, but couldn't get a religion. Deity AIs are nuts about grabbing all the religions.

Built 3 city NC and got Oracle in 2nd city. NC complete turn 79, and settled 4th city. 5th city on the coast soon followed.

Mid Game
Spoiler :
Education turn 98. Was concerned with Wu Zetain, at this point, as she had CKN's and knights, to my handful of jags and archers. I managed to stay friendly with her, however, and she soon joined the war against Casimir, who was a serious psychopath in my game--he buried Morocco early, attacked everyone on his borders, and took some city states.

I used a cargo ship, and rush bought a workshop, in 5th city on the coast to catch to it up to the rest.

Bulbed ST turn 140, and had commerce to mercantilism finished just before. Got secularism prior. Used Oxford for Radio, and got Ideology turn 148. I chose Order, since my GPT wasnt great then, and I felt I needed sky-scrapers to get important science buildings up fast. In retrospect, Freedom probably would have shaved off more turns, but the lack of having a religion kind of forced me towards order.

End Game
Spoiler :
Early Schools got me Plastics turn 179. My low culture, however, delayed free thought, which messed up my timing at the end. I had to delay my first bulbs by about 10 turns.

I was also missing a scientist or two at the end. Wu Zetain stole architecture from me, and built Porcelain Tower (and Taj) like 2-3 turns later. I only had enough faith to buy 1 GS, and I couldn't stop Arts Funding being enacted.

Finished Apollo turn 209, and Hubble a few turns later. Used Engineer from Order finisher to rush the last part. Launched turn 228. Not nearly as fast as Acken ;) (freedom!) or the top players here, but a good time for me.

Thanks for the map! Fun to play, and perfectly suited for the Aztecs.

My build was something like here, but don't remember exactly:

CAP: scout, scout, monument, shrine, settler, settler, ,scout, granary, library, NC, floating garden

I city: granary, library, floating garden

II city: library(bought for NC), granary, floating garden

I see you take Chemistry + Fertilizer after schools, do you always ? Did you bulb schools in your game ? I bulbed neither schools nor labs in mine.

No, I don't always take Chemistry + Fertilizer after schools, but in this game I wanted to further boost growth.

Yes, I bulbed schools but not plastic (got at 173T with 3 RAs)

I am definitely interested in your production numbers, I am going to assume you took out major loans and bought (seriously discounted: Mercantilism and Skyscrapers and/or Big Ben) solar/nuclear plants and spaceship factories everywhere, disbanded every specialist and put every tile to work as much hammers as humanly possible. I think parts cost 1500 hammers on Standard, right?
