Welcome to the TSG88 After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state victory date and score (preferably in the post title), as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory!

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed and submitted your game.

Please use the Civ5 game submission page to submit your final, first play through, .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.).

- Did the game options changes help or hinder victory and how?
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
- Did Inca's unique traits factor into your Science game plan? If so, how?
- How did you adjust your strategy to account for the option changes in a Science game?

Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences (please state if the game is a replay). Please refrain from posting videos until the deadline for submission is over.

Would be interested to hear any thoughts on game setup. :)

I finished at turn 341, so 1921 AD. Dunno why it appears wrong, prob because of med start.

Anyway, nothing out of the ordinary... haven't played GoTM, or Standard speed, or Civ 5 for that matter for 3-4 months now, so, i'm somewhat pleased with the score.
Went Tradition and fertility rites, NC with 2 cities. Didn't have enough culture, so rationalism was not finished and i stupidly used the culture i had for tenets....
Maybe order would have been better for the use of GE's for rocket parts, cause money wasn't flowing - because i didn't build caravans.

Launched in 1925 (turn 345?).

Messed up my social policies. Normally I go Tradition but this time wanted to get production up fast so tried full liberty instead. Also took the tradition opener (for HG), Patronage opener (for Forbidden Palace) and Rationalism. Went Order as far as Workers' Faculties. Didn’t get to finish Rationalism so missed a free tech and couldn’t buy any GS’s. Forgot that Tradition was the one for buying GE’s so had about 3k of unspent faith at the end.

Probably could have shaved a few turns off if I’d not messed up the social policies.

Did the game options changes help or hinder victory and how?

Slight hinderance in that I went a little too softly softly from an expansion point of view and burned hammers on wonders for happiness I might not have. There was almost no trade to be had so not many WLTKDs to be had either (I played peacefully the whole game).

How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?

Wasn’t worried about getting the lead or being taken out so it was more about seeing how fast I could grow.

Did Inca's unique traits factor into your Science game plan? If so, how?

Oh yes. I love playing the Inca. Terrace farms for growth and natural production when settling in the hills along with no improvement maintenance cost. What’s not to like?

How did you adjust your strategy to account for the option changes in a Science game?

I figured I wasn’t going to get DOWed and only actually saw 2 wars - one of which I caused with a half-hearted bribe hoping that Greece would take out France and get dog-piled. I didn’t do a lot with military other than fend off barbs.

Nothing really special to report. Things got better as the game progressed but I really did not like the choices I made at the start and that made this game longer than it should of.

Easy game. I did only three cities + fourth on ALU in the end of the game. I went for full Tradition, than full Rationalism, and next to Order. I had no wars at all, just focus on science. Religion (Initiale rates, Pagodas,...) gave me money in the beginning, next GEs and GSs.

This game was kind of strange, I guess I'm not really used to prince difficulty. I went for peaceful tall game with 3 cities, all by the mountain: capital one tile south on the hill/river, second city by the dyes on the north and the third one by the sugar on the south.
Policies were: full tradition -> openers for commerce and aesthetics -> full rationalism and initial freedom tenets in the mean time. Aesthetics was probably a strange choice, but I managed to maintain golden age for nearly all the game thanks to artists (and chitzen + taj mahal).
Science was roughly: civil service -> education -> printing press -> astronomy -> scientific theory -> radio -> plastics -> satellites -> robotics -> leftovers.
I didn't really plan for religion, but I managed to get one (thanks to religious idols pantheon), so I got: tithe (26 GPT at the end of game), divine inspiration (I figured that would give me quite a lot of faith for scientists, but didn't go that well) and for enhancement religious community and religious texts.

AIs were totally useless. At the end, they all were in renaissance/early industrial and barbs were pillaging their lands all the time. Also they had sooo many spies in my capital, like every 2-3 turns I got info about killing one or getting stuff stolen (despite knowing only half AIs). I guess AIs get a replacement spy right after one gets killed? After a while, I send all my spies to city states, because my techs were getting stolen very fast anyway.
I didn't really scout at the beginning (to keep my initial units home to protect from barbs without losing production on additional units), so I met only five AIs (there was no congress at all) and four CS.
After plastics I used 4(?) GS, for over 4k science each and that nearly got me to satellites, after hubble I used 4 of them again (2 from hubble, 1 from faith and one normal) and that basically was enough to get robotics and large part of top branch.
I thought that happiness would be problem in this game (because of sparse resources), but I didn't really have any problems, except the beginning when some barbs managed to pillage my dyes or sugar. I didn't even build any colosseums.

A 7 city peaceful attempt - with accidental excess beakers and faith.
Spoiler :

This is a builders game that revolves around self supplied happiness and gold -> hybrid Liberty and Tradition for me. We will need both Monarchy and Meritocracy for early happiness. Republic, the free worker, and the free settler are also a high priority.

First cities are placed next to mountains (well, yeah ...) and positioned for solid mid-term development. I don't see the need to plan for cities larger than size 20, maybe 25 in Cuzco. Early focus in on getting out Workers -> Granaries -> Caravans -> Aqueducts, so hammer tiles are prioritized to make this happen. We can grow later.

For me the biggest challenge in this one is forgoeing all these wonders that I don't usually get to build. Still, I do want some of the good stuff.

Early Builds:

Oracle, Notre Dame, Macchu Picchu, NC

Mid Game:

Borobudur, Taj Mahal, Chichen Izta (still available?!), Pisa, Ankor Wat (the city states told me to ... ), Sistine (because ... :mischief: ), Globe (umm ... )

Late Game:

Hubble, Kremlin

My religion was designed for gold, happiness, and late game faith buying (which never happened).

Religious Idols (faster founding)
Tithe
Happy Temples
Swords into Plowshares
Intinerent Preachers

The Incan Empire as we enter the Industrial Age. Sending out a settler...

From there is was just building up infrastructure. I was planning on winning the World's Fair, so I figured 900 hammers should do it (with extra players, but reduced cost), right? The AI just didn't really seem interested so I had to put nearly 90% of the production myself. Ouch. That meant (along with poor guessing) that I would be a little short finishing rationalism + 6 in order. No faith buying. Ultimately I seriously overestimated the number of Great Scientists I would need anyways - major spillover beakers with unspent faith in the bank. So another 10-15 turns off my finish is easily attainable, I think. Beakers peaked at 1.5k before I fired all the scientists.

The Liberty finisher GE was used for the last piece.

Not a bad game really, I enjoyed it. I do like the reduced number of CS - makes each CS more interesting. The large land area was fun to explore, even into the Industrial. I did miss one Natural Wonder pre-Satellites :)

For me a strange game: zero worker steals(!!), only one quick fake war (is that an unescorted settler, Ethiopia? ). Nearly zero GPT from the AI, except for a few horse and iron mid-game deals.

The barbs really did a number on the poor AI too. If it wasn't for their many tech steals I don't know if any would have made it out of the Medieval Era.

The GotM staff really doesn't like the French; is this the best Dance of the Aurora capital I've seen?

I played this game pretty bad.

1. had lots of science leftover (like 10 turns) - could not really calculate how much science I needed.
2. Failed to use religion: I didn't build any faith buildings and that was a major failure. I had to buy GProphet later with 500 faith to spread religion to my cities (it took forever to naturally spread, and I missed out all growth and production advantages for my other 3 cities)
3. Spent more than 5 turns under unhappiness... enough said. Should have built +10 happy wonder fast.
4. Scouting sucked - I didn't even meet one CS till the end (I could see it with satellites, but didn't "meet" it)

Went for Science. Initially crashed my economy again (seems to be a feature of my GOTM attempts) due to little gpt and barbarians sacking my trade routes. Recovered and launched the spaceship the same turn the 2nd civ picked their ideology. Soooo many spies hit me when I entered the Ren. era. Inca = Terrace farm everywhere.

Hey. This was a lot of fun, although I still have no idea how you guys knock out these victories so early (1200s? Insane.) I usually check back here when I think about it, but it was nice to see a Prince level game that I could get in on. I would also take part in a King, but anything above that I would likely find too difficult/frustrating.

I started the Piety line and soon regretted it. I was thinking that it would be useful for the 'buy great people with faith in the industrial age' then never even got to reformation (plus finishing the science tree lets you buy great scientists anyhow). I also am a bit of a compulsive wonder builder, despite what I read on the forums, and I think this may contribute to my inability to take things to the next level.

I don't know how to take screen shots, but basically I used to my tech advantage to lean militarily as well, and crippled Morocco then took out Ethiopia to secure the SW corner of the map. I could have easily took out Assyria (who was immediately trailing me) as well, but there was no point. After that I just turtled and concentrated on the science victory. (Although not a particularly rapid one, from the other games I am seeing here.) I had monetary and barbarian issues early, though I guess the other civs did as well, since none of them were ever in any danger of passing me on the scoreboard.

I don't think I especially liked the sparse resource setting. I think it contributed to the isolation of the other civs. Although I did like the map - highlands? I like the bottle-necks created by the bodies of water. Overall a lot of fun. Is a King game next?

We have a loose difficulty schedule. We do 2 GotMs per month, released on the 1st and 15th of each month. The ones on the 1st are higher level difficulties, usually anything from Emperor to Deity. The releases on the 15th are generally anything from Warlord to King. I think King is next for the game on the 15th but the GotM for the 1st won't.

Hope that helps. Thanks for playing and posting.

I'm with you on how fast some people can win. I have copied opening actions of several people and somewhere my game goes sideways compared to theirs. I've played this GOTM about six times now, and haven't cracked T200 yet. Heck, I haven't even finished better than about 220.

However....you do know they aren't finishing THAT early, right? Don't look at the dates, look at the number of turns. Because of the submission program, any games started after Ancient Era have a messed up date.

- Did the game options changes help or hinder victory and how?
They caused a slow start and a initial lack of gold/happiness
- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
No worry because I was confident for a easy win
- Did Inca's unique traits factor into your Science game plan? If so, how?
I greatly enjoyed terrace farms and quick move through hills for units, but none of them has been a breaking help for Science
- How did you adjust your strategy to account for the option changes in a Science game?
I chose Honor SP to take advantage of barbarian warfare (+gold, +culture, new camps revealed), because AIs were never a threat

Took liberty, I'm actually not sure tradition being the best choice here. Or it s maybe because I'm addicted to liberty ;)
The reason being that pumping settlers out with raised cost should be a pain, you can build aqueduct immediatly and they are not that expensive. Plenty of terrace so food won't be such a problem anyway.

My biggest mistake early was, as others said, not focusing enought on gold and happiness. Crippled me. Also not fun when a lonely barb jumps into a 7 caravan fest. Forgot that a pillaged caravan = another barb...

I do also have almost zero experience on fast bulbing. I tried my best but ended up with like 2 or 3 GS + ratio finisher with only 1turns tech. I had a good faith generation though, made 3 GS out of 5k.

Also had issues about culture, way too slow.

Bonus point on screenshot: I was like "How the hell I can see a paratrooper this early?????" then it went to "How the hell he got a Merchant of Venice?" Oh, patronage finisher, nevermind :)
Too bad AI can't really make a use of this imba gift. CS, really want to give me the tool to destroy you? Oh ironic ;)

Edit: I don't know if you scouted out, but we had the BEST start of all the AI. I can't even imagine if I were in Poccatelo or Nappy's foot!

After playing several practice games I decided to use my first 3 policies in Commerce to get to the cheaper purchases/science from gold producing buildings. This took care of the problem of losing money right away thanks to the opener's +25% gold in the capital. Then I built markets first in my first two cities both for the extra science from the policy and to get the gpt up.

I ended up with just 3 cities, the 3rd I built late on the coast to the west for the salt and the 2nd coal so I wouldn't have to replace the terrace farm the 2nd city had on its coal until I was ready to start building SS parts.

The only other real problem was all the barbarians in the early game.

I went for completing tradition starting with the first policy earned. Then I started on Rationalism. As soon as I had my 3 factories completed I went Order and got the factory science boost policy before finishing Rationalism. I was saving Writers to get thru Rationalism a little faster. I didn't make any RA's so after Secularism I used the writers to get the right side finished.

I ended up building 2 scientists early on. The first to get Industrialization and the 2nd to finish Rocketry on the turn I was able to take the last policy in Rationalism so I could get Satellites for free.

I ended up using Oxford just to get an extra tech at the end to boost my score a bit, mainly because I forgot to build it earlier.

I'm sure this could have been done much faster, but at least I managed an early 200's win.

Hey, a commerce opening, nice. I thought about that. Protectionism looks so attractive, but it's buried. Wagon Trains are less useful than usual because of the roads-on-hills part of the Incan UA (unless its bugged and you can make money this way ... that would change things!) The Cuzco mint does get a small boost...

Actually, isn't a mint a higher priority than a market? (I'm nearly certain I built a market first too.)

Find any use for an early Landsknecht or two?

I thought that the we were supposed to play the GOTM with out any replays?

Indeed. Almost Surely Monthar is referring to newly created maps rolled with the same settings. It is pretty common (and useful) to create these maps for unusual games. Some people go so far as to play multiple complete games before downloading/opening the actual GotM save.

Yes, practice games means generating my own maps using the same settings, not replaying the official map.
