Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 89
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Eighty-ninth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Intentional use of the Science Overflow Bug is banned. Its use will result in your game being disqualified for results.

In this game, the designated VC is Science. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Science victory turn.

In this game you will play as Korea and lead the Korean Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized Pangaea plus map played at Immortal difficulty and at standard pace. Science is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until August 3rd to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG89 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Sejong - Korea
Number of AI Opponents: 7
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Pangaea Plus
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Immortal
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Quick Combat is disabled. (You may turn it on using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. DLC is required for this game. You must have all of the DLC except Conquest of the New Worlds Deluxe..

In this game, you will be playing as Korea, you possess Scholars of the Jade Hall. +2 Science for all Specialists and for all Great Person tile improvements. Receive a tech boost each time a scientific building or Wonder is built in the Korean capital.

You can train the Turtle Ship, it replaces the Caravel. The Turtle Ship has a more powerful attack then the Caravel it replaces and is very difficult to destroy. However, it may not enter deep ocean hexes outside of the city borders The Turtle Ship requires that you discover the technology of Astronomy and you do not need a resource to build them.

You can also train the Hwach'a, it replaces the Trebuchet. The Hwach'a is extremely effective against enemy land units. It is slow and vulnerable to enemy melee attack; it should always be supported by other units when in the field. The Hwach'a must use a turn to "set up" before it can attack. The Hwach'a requires that you discover the technology of Physics and you do not need a resource to build them.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 3 August 2014 (we'll give the weekend to finish).

The save will be available for download on 1 July 2014, midnight Central Daylight time (UTC -6:00) in the US.
The Save can be found here.

What Pangaea plas mean? I do not think there are such official map type, thought I do not have all map packs.

It's from the Explorer's Map Pack. Pangaea Plus and Continents Plus maps put all the CS's off the main landmass(s). They're usually on tiny-small islands just off the coast. Typically most are far enough from the coast that they can't be met without a ship or embarked unit. The main advantage of this map type is more room to settle the main landmass(s).

I am curious as to why this is another Immortal game since the last top level game was also Immortal. I was kind of hoping for Emperor so I'd even have a chance.

Immortal+Pangea+Coastal+Seijong...i wonder which date the winner will have...below 200 maybe? Is it possible this time?

About Pangea+: I suggest to build an early trireme. CS are almost all around the Pangea. Very few only are situated on main land.

I will settle in place and try for The Great Library along a general path to Theology. I would like to add the Hanging Gardens if possible.

This was on my suggestion, Monthar. Leif originally suggested Emperor/Sci. But since TSG88 was also SV I wasn't sure if either the diff (since the last game was Prince) or the VC (for repetitive SV reasons) should change. I thought the strategies for Emperor SV having just followed Prince SV wouldnt be too significantly different so I thought a bump to Immo would keep it from feeling repetitive. I thought the community might not like back-to-back SVs if difficulties weren't far enough apart to keep it interesting.

So yeah, that choice was my doing. Sorry about that, Monthar.

If it was a mountain near the coast. :)

Move to the (possible) entrance of the river on the hill for the garden/watermill.
Yeah or Nay?

I don't think so. if it's not on the coast you lose access to the fish and obviously the sheep. If the warrior was able to get there in one turn I'd consider it, but as it is you're looking at a turn or 3 delay on settling. An early pantheon could get the salt iron faith bump to found an early religion. Of course Shaka could be our neighbor so we will be to busy dodging impii to worry about that.

The salt look forested so that's 40 free production towards a library and the science bump for it. There is a mountain to the south east so if there is some arable land around it that could be the ideal spot for the second city.

Are those forested grassland salt that I see?

Is that better than Lake Victoria + Grand Mesa? (yes, yes it is).

Edit: Actually two plains salts are better than that NW combo (once improved) ... so this is, well, this is better than any start I've played.

That's understandable HR.

As for this start, the northern edge of the sugar appears to be coastal, but that's no guarantee the forest hill next to it is as well. Since it would take 2 turns to move the settler there it's too much of a risk. Settling in place puts both sheep in the 3rd ring and allows stoneworks since the hill we're on is grassland, so I think settling in place is probably the best option.

I'm not sure which way to move the warrior, but I think having it scout south while building a scout to cover north and another for west might work.

GL will be hard to pull off, but at least you still get a boost from the library itself. If you can build/buy the library and get the GL both that's 2 boosts. Without the river start HG is probably much more important to get to in order to have the garden for boosted GS generation. That path also means one more tech to get a market built/bought fairly quickly and manning it for the science boost from the specialist.

Keep in mind, one of the patches made it so unemployed citizens no longer get the bonus science from the UA.

Anyonr know how mach boost one getting form sci buildings/wanders? Does it carry on next tech?

if we cannot meet CS early in the game, it will delay progress a lot. No free worker(s), no CS meeting gold, no quests ...

If there are more space to expand, maybe I try liberty this time.

I was thinking about opening Tradition and Liberty for the Pyramids then close Tradition, but I think I will just hard build two workers instead.

I will move my warrior west. If we settle in place there are 7 land tiles that we cannot see. There might also be more fish that we cant see. There might even be marble and if there is I might do mining>masonry>writing.

I think its doable, I've done GL on deity with similar starts (salt + chops). Although, never a salt forest. Maybe thats better no movement between chop and mining salt.
All depends on wether I can get an early AI or CS worker. That and getting mining from a hut perhaps.
