Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 90
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Ninetieth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Intentional use of the Science Overflow Bug is banned. Its use will result in your game being disqualified for results.

In this game, the designated VC is Culture. All VCs are enabled but players results will be published by fastest Culture victory turn.

In this game you will play as Greece and lead the Greek Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized map played at King difficulty and at standard pace. Culture is the designated VC for this game. You will have until August 15th to complete the game and submit.

You can also train Hoplite, a Unique Greek melee unit replacing the Spearman. It has a much higher combat strength and does increased damage against mounted units.

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Friday, 15 August 2014.
The save will be available for download on 15 July 2014, midnight Central Daylight time (UTC -6:00) in the US.

The Save can be found here.

That appears to be a coastline, although it could just be a lake. I think I'll move the warrior north to the jungle then decide if I want to settle in place for the riverside hill start or move to the grassland between the copper and cows for a coastal start if that is coast instead of lake. A coastal start might be best for the stronger trade routes, especially internal routes for food. However, a coastal start would need HG to have a garden for increased gp production. All three lux would still be workable planting on that coastal grasslands.

@HR You really don't need to specify that Mongolia is required, nor ever turn it off for non-DLC games, because it was a free DLC that came with one of the early patches. So as long as everyone is patched to the current build, which they have to be to load the save, they'll have Mongolia.

At least 2 desert tiles to be worked. If it significantly larger I will try for DF as my pantheon. Assuming I can get a good jump on religion taking sacred sites is a no brainer. Liberty and piety aesthetics freedom. Alex was meant to be played wide...

this one looks interesting. I assume we need astronomy (Continents), so usual sacred sites won't work.

I would suggest two methods:

1. Beeline for astro, and hotel tech. tradition 2-3 cities and just build wonders like crazy.

2. "delayed" Sacred sites: similar to usual sacred sites, but up to astro focus on tech. If possible, time policy so that you can get reformation when you are about to meet all civs. Do SS from then.

I really do not understand how to win by culture. Anyone can explain in little more detail how they generate 300 or soo tourism?

OK. The south grass tile on river looks like a good spot. Must send warrior down see first. otherwise settle in place.

I'm thinking continent kill, museum spam. Finish Louvre to Hotel.

Just tech fast and stack the theme bonuses in your cap. Aesthetics tree is important. There are also multipliers involved, World Religion, open borders, trade routes, etc. Try to rack that all up. Finish with music bombs on the high culture civs or just kill them.

Really interesting. I think a delayed sacred sites like the one Glory7 mentions after Astro, but clean up your continent before with CB rush, that should get us a significant number of cities plus comfortable expansion space before meeting the rest of the world. Trick here is time it right and ensure conquest does not slow you down too much in tech.
Going 2-3 cities tradition will be 250-300, delayed SS could be faster.

Thanks. I wasnt technically certain those would be included but I suspected as much. The patch details have since left my memory recall so I just erred on the side of caution. I'll try to keep this in mind for the next DLC game.

And would not it be easier to kill all but one and to bomb his by musicians?

In my experience continent script is not always requite astronomy. Often there are coastal connection and one got to meat other civs before astronomy.

I think I will move the settler to the floodplains tile on the left. No luxuries in first ring, but it will open up the coastal spot for a second city for my liberty free settler. Decided, I will go for just 2 cities up to Edu, clear continent and late SS as soon as I get it. Need to think of a plan B if that does not work. Probably Petra if desert is any good.

The starting location looks great, I don't expect the warrior to find a reason to move to the coast. Cargo ships can traffic food between other cities, or be used to generate income since our building upkeep will be significant.

I hope for a Petra site somewhere in the west or southwest. Moving the Settler in that direction could cause unwanted overlap.

Run 4 test games with similar starts. Not to the end, just until meeting the world. This is what. I have learned, all are winnable but for early turn win:
- SS worked in 2 of them to win by turn 230-250 or so, did not work in the other 2, they looked like t300+
- The difference seems to be to get a decent desert and/or a faith NW. It is also extremely important who your opponents are, warmongers are good.
- Even when it works, there is always a culture runaway. You have to achieve 70 tourism by t150-170 to make it viable.
- Cleaning your continent by t150 without slowing down ICS or tech too much seems really difficult. i did not manage to clean up the continent in any of the games.
- So extremely situational, we'll have to wait and see who we are up against and what does the map look like in the first 30 turns.
- Having said all that, in HOF there are some mindblowing early Cult wins on continents with other civs not Alex, so SS can work.
I am really no wiser than before the test games. But it was fun!

I played 2 test games, because I never did culture victory befor.
In first I went tradition/aesthetic/exploration/liberty.
Strategy was 2 cityes - 2 caravans- math - capital build HG, second city cats. I build 3 hoplites before to do CS quests, steal workers, settlers.

Nearest neighbor was keep in one city, easy take with 3 cats 3 hoplites with loss of 1 scout 1 hoplite.

Capital continue wander building, second city build Petra and then catapult+hoplite + 3 companion cavalry (need them in order to keep land free of barbarians).

Next ai was taken with remaining forces (3 cities, one raised) and next was taken with cats up to trebusheds and hoplites to pikes. (2 cities) , continent clear.

Polynesia find me very early, but I meet other continent after I clean mine, so only Polynesia was very upset on me.

Win turn 272 - first culture victory for me.
Second I try SS strat, I had my own penecila on my continent, lots of space to settle (different start). I went Liberty-piety mix, problem was that before I finished piety the only AI who did grab SS. So, I fail my principal strategy and I finish game on turn 328.

So, my conclusion is that if one want SS strategy one probably need to go pure piety.
Liberty /piety mix too slow and recovery if one unlucky is hard ( one finished with useless branch). I took Sci buildings with fault, so I can Rush unies+ with my 7 cities I build before I abort further expansion.

I did not have any problems getting SS in any of my games. Essential to ally culture CSs (easy with Alex) and get Oracle (easy on King), I was always the first with Reform. But I did not have any of the hardcore religious civs like celts or gandhi, so it may depend on the AIs.

So, my conclusion is that if one want SS strategy one probably need to go pure piety.

Monument before shrine until you grab sacred sites. Oracle is needed also. It's king, you can have liberty to collective rules and SS T110.

Issue is more faith pantheon for early religion and enhance. With low faith, you can enhance without second faith building to pick. It's not essential, but can help is some situations.

Build temples early is risky. Many times, it wastes your economy.
