Why is it that the Praetorian and Cataphract get so much press, but the Oromo warrior doesn't? If you use vassalage and theocracy, you can get them up to SUPER FIRST STRIKING OMGWTF DRILL IV!

Hmm, I wonder, if I enabled... whatever its called... where you can mix and match civs and leaders... and used Cyrus with Ethiopia... could I get Drill IV and Woodsman III?

Super first striking musketman, GO!

Ethiopia is my new favorite Civ, not only is the Oromo warrior an awesome unit among it's peers, it has these things going for it too:
  • a late UU so you aren't forced to choose between early war and peaceful expansion
  • you can bee-line to it fairly early on
  • it upgrades nicely to later industrial and modern units

Plus creative and organized makes for very easy expansion and conquest. An all around fantastic civ. Build stonehenge though!

Yeah, because of their awesome Cultural UB

I also love Ethiopia, but I find them too easy. I don't play with them for the same reason I didn't play with the old Augustus.

I didn't think they could get Drill III and Drill IV. If they do, that's pretty crazy.

Because they are new and people are slow to pick up on things like this, keep the secret..

Everything about them works nicely. REX and then have a nice defensive unit in the midgame to protect your vast empire. The UB is also underrated, +25% culture may sound fair but once its in action you really appreciate it. Plus, he's got cheap libraries, courthouses, theatres, colosseums.

Here's a good counter: knights with Combat/Pinch. They are stronger, have an extra move, and can be cheaply upgraded to cuirassiers, which are even better at trashing the Oromo with 12 Str! Those first strikes don't do you any good against cavalry!

Yes indeed..... Gosh I hated facing knight and Cuirrasier armies with my oromo warriors... negated their first strike ability.... Still, later in the game, say hello to Drill IV Rifles and Infantry

Yeah I was quietly pleased when I saw that all gunpowder units can now get Drill I-IV, I was like 'OMFG I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW AWESOME GUNPOWDER UNITS ARE NOW!!!!'

But yeah, Oromo's rule, they're the best unit to upgrade if you ask me, Imagine Tokugawa of the Ethiopians, Combat I + City Garrison I + Drill I + Drill I + Drill II :)

When I think of 'Oromo Warrior' I think of fierce horsemen, though I guess Civ4 has enough Knight-replacement UUs. Tigrean gunmen were the ones known as most skilled in Ethiopia, IIRC.

Just bring Pikemen with every Oromo stack, or Knights of your own.

Oh lawd! Combat I + CG I + Drill III and then add a Formation promotion to neutralize those damn Knights and you're off!

Of course. It's just that, often, those high str Combat II/III Knights in the enemy stack are picked to defend against oromo warriors.

I haven't had the pleasure of playing eithopia yet, but just from what i see in the civopedia they do look very great. Must try them some time. Not too keen on the leader's traits as they don't suit my playing style so much but oromo would be reason enough to give ethopia a try.

The traits?

Cheap Civics
Cheap courthouses
Cheap lighthouses
Cheap factories
Cheap Libraries
Free Culture
Cheap Happiness - theatres & coliseums

Who doesn't like cheap stuff? :goodjob:

sure! i am not saying he has bad traits just they don't suit my playing style at the mo. These days I run uber-specialist ecomonies so philosophical is a must. Since BTS I can't stop playing sulieman (philo/imperialistic) of the ottomans (the other uber-musketman civ!). If firaxis put out another expansion ( :please:) with haile sellasie (philosophical/whatever) as leader of ethiopia then I am sold!!!

Thats fine an dandy if your countering the AI's Oromo.

I always find it fascinating that people assume the AI is intelligent enough to do something like that? They suck with promotions and choosing counter units.

Most people on here don't even play MP and yet they give advice as if the average player was challenging a Human.

Oromo's start with Drill IV.. the AI is not smart enough to counter your Oromo's.

If a leader has the Protective trait (I think that's the one, that gives automatic Drill I promotion) does it stack with the Oromo Warrior if you mix/match leaders with civs? Basically, do they come out of the gate with Drill III (w/o barracks or civics) or does the trait and UU overlap to just give you Drill II?

I'm sure it would only come out with:
Combat I
CG I
Drill I
Drill II

I actually think Philisophical isn't a must for Specialist Economies (which I tend to run a lot of the time). Creative helps with cheap libraries and so you can run scientists early. Organized helps with being able to support more cities and thus more specialists!
