Two topics, one thread.

1) I've seen the lions. Will there be wild animals from other regions of the world? Bears in the forest, polar bears in the arctic, alligators in the swamps, scorpions in the desert (I'd like to see that represented visually!)? Are the lions a type of barbarian, or are they a unit used by the barbarians?

Note - The barbs in Civ3 certainly did act more like animals than tribes of people, so the step seems logical in that respect.

2) It seems the shield has been replaced with a hammer (or something similar) for production (see the images with the bottom interface and the round button to the left of the minimap containing a gold symbol, food symbol and a hammer).

The predatory animals could be good if well implemented.

Animals generally fear humans and only venture into settlements when hungry. Having them behave like Barbarians would suck.

When predatory animals spawn, they should migrate towards food-rich tiles. They might catch odd worker, armies would have to shoo them away, and they would rarely attack a city.

It would be good if they were huntable for extra food comerce or luxeries in some places.Hop they dont act like barbarians just like in age of empires i hated it they always killed my villagers.

... or when thirsty in a draught or in the midst of summertime. Back at home we had wild boars, mountain goats and snakes crawling all over our garden (we lived beside a mountain) when the blazing heat scorched everything.

I think you should get a cultural bonus and perhaps economic bonus in the late game to represent tourism for choosing not to destroy your regions wildlife but a square will be unworkable.

I think that a few animal-barbarians should be present to represent dangerous areas of the globe that were hard to explore without armed escort.

I seem to remember reading that there will be four types of animals: lions, bears, wolves, and panthers.

Rewriting the History!
Cool!
The thing is that only the name remain the same as history. It is not rewritng the history, it is a whole new history.

This will sound dorky...

There should be hippos in rivers and swamps not alligateors because hippos are the leading cause of death to humans by animals in africa. Scorpians? More people die by spider bites and they live evryehre.

I would kill myself if snakes were in there, and caused death. Did you know it's more likely to die by being hit in the head by a coconut then bya snake bite in the u.s.

Will oasis have killer coconut trees? The number one cause of death in the home takes place in the bathroom. Oh No! my city was struck with bathroom. 3 population died!

I really hope they keep animals out of it. considering they play such a TINY role in human history. Perhaps that should allready bre covered with disease in civ 3?

rodents spread the plague, not a TINY role... i guess diseases in civ3 represent that though. anyways, i wonder how lions, bears, wolves, and panthers are utilized in cIV

If lions, bears, and wolfs act like barbarians and attack military units for damage, then I WILL NOT BUY THIS GAME. That is the stupidest thing I've seen/read about Civ 4 so far.

Imagine Caesar getting a report: "Sorry sir, a pack of lions has attacked and destroyed our 10,000 man legion. You should have fortified against them."

Lame.

Actually, I liked it in AOE.

Now, it would be better if those animals are not just replacement for barbs. In AOE they were also (limited) food resources. It would be good if it's also implemented in CIV (whoever kills a lion gets 10 food or sth which could be carried over to the next city).

Actually, it should read, "Sorry sir, a pack of lions rebelled against the gladiators and destroyed your city. Guess we weren't feeding them enough Christians."

In AOE one animal would attack a stray soldier or villager. That's fine... it happens.

But come on, a lion attacking an infantry column and doing significant damage? In Civ, where units are not just one person, but represent anywhere from 100 to 1000+ troops, the idea is just plain silly, childish, and stupid.

That would be quite ridiculas but making them the supply for furs and food seems a good one to me.

But the battle graphics will look cool.

<sarcasm intended - i agree with you.>

That's covered in disease- there should be a plague feature though, involving hygeine. I'm talking about large animals, like lions and bears
