GOTM -132 Spoiler

Compared to haleewud I was perhaps 10 turns behind at this point, 200 turns into the game, with the endgame beginning. Numbers of cities are similar but my population and buildings are way down. I am 9 techs behind, and it is getting to a regular 1/turn time.

It's hard to tell how much better I could have done this phase: could more focused play have kept closer, or was this the consequence of the gap that had opened up earlier in the game?

1500-1750 I delivered, by sea all the way (I never built a railway up continent 12), 24 vans to foreign cities for 14,400g, and 14 vans to own cities for 2,700g.

Interesting to see how much production (factories, platforms, Hoover dam) haleewud has added, but I guess you can't spend all the 60,000g earned from trade on subversion!

That is one thing that I wish I would have thought of earlier, a major subversion effort. I subverted 2 Persians cities between +1510 and +1750, but I did it because they were on Continent 12 and the troops from the cities were interfering with the railroad. I did finally think of it later in the game, but just as I was about to start, the Egyptians switched to Democracy. Since I didn't want to have a war, I couldn't touch the Egyptians. I did, ultimately, subvert all of the Persian cities (except the capital of Persepolis).
 
I had some problems with Barbs, they captured a city on continent 45, but losing a ship with vans is very costly with such a long treck to the AI.
It was not quite that bad. It was the lead exploring ship with one unit on board trying to chart the world and hunt for huts along the way.
 
Charlie : If you are going to explore best options are Explorers or DIPS..you will rarely get Barbarians , and most of the time an advance city in the anti- oedo years...( consider Oedo years as an olympic issue , and soccer world cups...) I use a 2 turn or three after Oedo years to open a hut...rarely you will get a Hut with Barbarians..works for me !!
 
That is an interesting claim URUWASHI. I have never heard that hut outcomes are affected by the year in which they are tipped. Do you have any data to show us the details?

Ali, one thing it happens ( or at least I noticed ) is that Barbarians appear in cycles of 4 turns on , before or after Oedo years , and that is a consistent pattern, I will need to analize that theory. I am sure, as the game progresses they seem to appear in a specific location .

One of my favorite tricks is the " Partisan Trick " , when I notice Barbarians Popping in a specific location , I will build a City Near the spot where they appear.... and increase using 5 or 6 Setlers, then let the Barbarians take the city..depending on size and location of the city 8 to 12 NONE partisans will appear...the trick only works two or three times in the same continent.

In the past , before I joined this group, I experimented in many ways to understand how the AI works, that's how I learned about the special tiles and the creation of Huts.Regarding Barbarians. The only way to prove the " Showing " of Barbarians is to play in an open map , simply because we only can see whats going on ONLY on our discovered world.If you Play in an open map ( where all tiles can be visible ) and you know the " Barbarian Years " they will appear in a random spot...if you use the auto save....and go back and replay the same year...they will appear , not in the same location , but in a different place during the same turn.

I am NOT certain 100 % , about hut opening, my claim is based on my logs or maybe is a coincidence... this are the Oedo Years AD - 60, 140, 220,300, 380, 460, 540,620, 700, 780, 860,
940, 1020, 1100, 1180,1260, 1340, 1420, 1500, 1540, 1580, 1620, 1660, 1700, 1740...and many times I admit I do not WRITE the EXACT events on my Log , sometimes I build a city and realize a few turns later that I forgot tho post it.. In fact this happened in this game , I am Not Certain what Year I build my Science City..my last Save was 500 BC ...and the next 20 AD, so I GUESSED that my SS was built around 175 BC based on size of city.
 
It has been known for some time, as you mention, that barbarians that just appear on the scene do so only in certain years. Your extension of that to hut barbarians is interesting and worth a study to see if it can be backed up with real data.

In general I use EXPLORERS and Dips to open Huts, since explorers SEEM to have a better Ratio finding Advanced Cities . In this game my goal was to FIND the quickest way to get to the Persians using continent 12 , my TWO Explorers ( Movement of 3 ) objective was to Travel Near the South Coast ASAP to locate the fastets way North East, when they encountered a HUT , a Horse Unit and a Dips will open it turns later, in general I use 2 or 3 Units to open a Hut. When a Hut is located I sourround the location with a Horseman ( or Chariot ) , a Dip , and let the Explorer OPEN the hut, just in case is a Barbarian Hut, I will shield my explorer behind the horse and my Dip Can BUY a None Horse for 41 ..or Two if possible .

Again the priority in this game was to find a way for my ships to conquer Persians and Egyptians.

After I found the Ocean pathway between our Land and Persians, Explorers were send to other continents with one dip to Uncover Huts

Interestingly I Found 5 Advanced cities, ( 1080 , 1200 , 1380 , 1460 and 1580 ) mostly later in the game and my explorers were the Opening Units -

Hut outcomes have been studied at length. However, as far as I know, the researchers did not take the year or the unit that pops the hut into account. I highly doubt the latter makes a difference; simply because it makes no sense. I am not sure about the former: the year may have an effect on the barbarian outcome. If you can show with data that it does, you will be the first to do so.

The preferred method for huts pops is of course explorers. They can cover a lot more territory and even on difficult terrain they have enough movement points left to escape to a ship should barbarians appear. In practice though most exploration is done with warriors who are cheap and the earliest unit available.

I was a little surprised when I saw your log. In 1750, you were 5 techs ahead of me and getting ready to discover Space Flight (done in 1752).

I didn't discovered Space Flight in 1772.

You built Apollo in 1766. I built Apollo in 1774.

Your space race started in 1768. My space race didn't start officially until 1778, but unofficially it started in 1772 (same turn as Space Flight, when I started working on Wonders which would later change to SS parts).

However, you didn't launch your spaceship until 1788, my spaceship was launched in 1782.

So it looks like I was 3 turns faster than you. Of course, you will probably have a much higher score since you had 24 FT and I only had 9 and I am sure you had more citizen points than I had. BTW, how many cities did you have at the end?

I will post a log for the end of my game in a couple of days.
 
Did you launch a full space ship (4x3 modules)? or a minimal one (1x3 modules)?

I was in no hurry to build Apollo for the same reason you mentioned: I had cities working on wonders that would later turn into SS parts.

Your entire space race lasted 3 turns? Wow!

I did not count my cities past 1750. I made a note to go back and do that. My guess is that I added some 50 cites in this period.

I could have reduced science to 10% after the discovery of Space Flight and use the cash to speed up the space race but did not do so. In retrospect I should have done that primarily to cut down on real time. Each turn was taking near 90 minutes near the end.
 
I did launch a full (4-4-4-8-8-39) spaceship.

I had a number of cities that started a wonder in 1772. 9 of these cities produced 40 or more shields. In 1774, they switched to SC and rushed built it, then switched back to a wonder. They switched to SM when it was available. So 9 of the Modules were done in 5 turns.

The other 3 were rushed in 1780 so they were completed in 1782.

Most of my SC were built by starting a city improvement (like SDI Defense). After producing the first 30+ shields, the SDI Defense was rushed. Then I switched to SC. It then took 2 turns to complete the remaining 60 shields.

Many of these cities also built an SS after the SC was completed. 1 turn of production on Palace, then rush the Palace (to 100 shields), change to SS (50 shields) and normal production of +30 completes the SS on the second turn.

I spent 7368g on SS parts in 1774, 2878g in 1776, 3456g in 1778 and 1786g in 1780.

In 1778, 8 SS and 9 SC were completed.
In 1780, 5 SS and the remaining 7 SC were completed.
In 1782, all 12 SM and 26 SS were completed.


I did run Science at 0% from 1770 until 1778.

I was impressed by the fact that you were able to make 2 discoveries in many of your turns. I never had the citizens or science infrastructure to allow me to fully research a tech (without trade bonus) in a single turn.

I spent 10368g on SS parts in 1774, 2878g in 1776, 3456g in 1778 and 1786g in 1780.

In 1778, 8 SS and 9 SC were completed.
In 1780, 5 SS and the remaining 7 SC were completed.
In 1782, all 12 SM and 26 SS were completed.
Impressive. You must have saved money for quite a few turns for such a large expenditure. My treasury never went above 7500. I made most space ship parts with shields and vans not gold.
 
As it turns out, I somehow added the numbers incorrectly. In 1774, I actually spent 7368 (not sure how I added an extra 3000 to the total). I had 3492 left in the treasury at the end of 1772. Taxes added about 650 to the treasury. I made 6201 in deliveries in 1774. I did spend some money on city improvements in 1774.
