Question about starting bonuses and the first to discover benefit...

Hi, I'd like to know if you get a spy at the start if you play as the Chinese because they start with Writing technology. Secondly, if you play a game and not the Chinese but the Chinese is another player can you get the spy, the first to discover benefit or not.

To get the bonus you have to be the first to research the tech. I'm pretty sure you get a free spy even if someone is playing the Chinese.

You don't.

Neither do the chinese. Nobody gets a free spy from writing that game.

Writing 40 Alphabet Great Library, Spy Free Spy.
Yes you do get a free spy, check the technologies section under Info Center.

He's saying you don't get the free spy as either the chinese or if you're the first to research the tech in a game with the chinese also in it.

Sort of like how the Spanish don't start the game with a galleon, despite starting with navigation, nor does the next civilization to discover navigation get one.

Yes, since you're the first and they haven't "got" their bonus yet.

Not when the chinese are in the game, or you play as the chinese. The chinese start with the writing tech (but no spy). Since they start with the tech, there's no possible way to research it before them. When you do research it (even if your the first to actually research it) you won't get the free spy in that game because the chinese already know writing.

Yes, but good luck getting there before they reach the medieval age.

On the very first turn of the game maybe you could check the tech tree. If no "one" is shown for the tech you will not get the bonus for that tech as a civilization out there has it naturally.
