Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

IF I had an SGL I would rush the wonder in a place that was not building anything, but not way out in the border area.

Well I have cleared my landmass so It's very low risk that I would lose it in an invasion, or at least not for long.

Was mainly just wondering if it would have an effect on coruption. As I think it would be good if wonders had a small local effect on coruption by boosting lets call it civic pride, even if it only lasted for the age that the wonders belong to.

As you probably know, several wonders start generating commerce, due to becoming tourist attractions after 1,000 (?) years...

Hello all, is there a way to play civ not full screen? I've got a 23" screen and as you can imagine, it's ridiculous!! Thanks!

I'd build the ToE and use the SGL for Hoover Dam, or even save it for the UN, if I wasn't worried about not getting MGLs.

What is ridiculous about that? I use a 25" and it is fine, except I could only get 1280 to not freak out. Before I was using 1440.

Some of the even older games do have problem for me.

The only Wonder that effects corruption is the Forbidden Palace, unless you modify the game. A fair number of the earlier Wonders do generate happy faces, which can give you a boost in getting a WLTK day, which does reduce corruption. I believe a WLTK day reduces corruption by about 50%. If you are considering modifying the game, you might want to take a look at my thread on My Modding Philosophy, where I discuss ways to lower corruption, to include changing the government corruption settings.

Not that I've tried to do this, but here's how.
You can't really play in a window any other way, though if you use "keepres=1" and "video mode=xxxx" (where xxxx is a supported horizontal resolution less than your desktop) then the game will not fill the screen but shows in the upper left corner leaving some desktop exposed.

Got another SGL and built hover dam with him. Still early days on regent for me, the only real problem I am having with this level is managing the unhappyness. It's a real limiting factore for me now in the early game.

Up till now my approach to dealing with happyness had been to hook up some luxaries that I can get my hands on in the early game. Then go to war to get some more and after currency build marketplaces everywhere.

I think I am only three lux's short of the total in this game. Cleared my landmass and have a good tech lead. Thinking of going for Diplomatic now as I have not been at war with any surriving civ and have been trading with them for a while now. Have about 7 techs to go, so still to soon to start a prebuild for the UN.

If I don't have deals with the three other civ's for a lux from each of them my big cities have unhappyness problems. Should I be building temples/catherdals or be going down the collisem's route or just using the slider?

Am i just thinking of CIV 2 but do collisem's give better happyness after electricty?

If you have 5 lux and are on Regent, you should not need anything else. Are you talking about cities or metros?

Cath and Colosseum require a temple to be available to build. You can sell the temple afterwords, if you want. Anyway it would be easier and faster to just up the lux spending as long as it is not over 30 already.

The best bang for the buck is to have a market, when you have 3 or more lux. Metro's should have citizens that have no tile to work after getting over size 20. That should be enough to keep them happy.

I rarely build cath or colosseum at any level and for sure not at Regent. At least not for happiness, maybe for culture goals.

There size 12, The cities are nor revolting or anything just a good few people unhappy. I have lux slider at zero. I suppose I just have to get a bit better at using that at the moment I only really use it to deal with war wearness when thats a problem and focus all my spending on science.

You have the option of trying to keep everyone so happy that you get WLTKD. Your other option, normally, is to just do enough to have at least have as many happy faces as unhappy.

This is my preference. There are times where you can do the WLTKD at no extra cost, but mostly you have to pay a price. The best way to deal with WW is to win the war quickly or end it quickly.

That means 20 turns more less. You could also be in a form of government that has no issues with war, such as Monarchy. You could also spend the resources to make the pop happy, in spite of war, that is expensive.

(Emphasis supplied).

Grabbing luxes is a good idea. Building markets is a good idea, though I don't think you need them everywhere. Markets don't start adding happiness until you hook up (or trade for) a third lux. Every core city should have one, but smaller cities in the boonies (the specialist farms) don't necessarily need them. Try cranking up the lux slider. 100% science is nice, but keeping cities from rioting is pretty much mandatory. The only time I can think of where you'd want a city to riot is to keep a wonder from finishing too early. If that means 80% science & 20% lux, that's OK.

Hi There !! I would like to ask where can I find CIV 3: Conquest Scenarios Walkthroughs, hints&tips? I am playing the CIV 3 Complete version at the moment, Thanxx !!

You've pretty much found it. There is no walkthrough per se. The game is too variable for that.

You can use this thread to ask any questions you may have about the game. Or if it's more than a quick question, start a new thread.

Or not. I'm in an Emperor game (which I will probably lose, but that's a different story), Republic, & at war for well over 100 turns now--and only *just* beginning to see *any* war weariness. Special circumstances: a bewildering mix of dogpiles on several different civs, changing alliances, & AI's randomly DOWing me for no particular reason. So I've gotten a lot of war happiness. Ordinarily, though, I'd agree: Republics can handle 20 turns without much problem, but it usually gets tough after that.

I have played games in Republic and stayed at war for more than 100 turns, but that is not going to be the norm. It is too much work to try to list all the exceptions, that is why we have a general rules for things.

Around here someone will always come by and point out all the exceptions. You can count on it.

[picky]You can be winning comfortably and suffer massive war-weariness, for example when an infantry-army-defended, walled beachead town is swarmed with archers and warriors.[/picky]
