Historical events in Civ IV terms

- In 1206, the Mongols DOWed all their neighbours and proceeded to annihilate everyone with their Keshisk SODs. Unfortunately, the Revolutions mod was installed, and Genghis's empire rapidly collapsed after some 20 turns.

- In 1789, the French experienced some longer-than-expected anarchy when they switched from HR-Vassalage-Serfdom-OR to Representation-Bureaucracy-Emacipation-FR. In the end, Napoleon had to switch back to HR so he could get the Military Garisson bonus so he can conquer Europe with his SOD.

- In 1857, Victoria's recently conquered colonies in India began to revolt (she apparently had RevDCM installed) and lots of Indian rebels began to spawn. Her vassal the Mughal Empire and some of the princely states took the liberty of declaring independence from her. She and her loyal vassals eventually defeated them, but she decided to just curbstomp the Mughals.

- In 1859, Great Scientist Charles Darwin discovered Biology. Unfortunately, a glitch caused some happiness penalties to occur.

- In 2010, Great Artist Lauren Faust was born in California(?), which Obama used as a culture bomb. However, another glitch gave Obama major happiness bonuses all around the US (which Vicky probably was cursing).

Israel Needs more time to get its Missile defense built, so they are massing parachute troops in an effort to stall Iran's nukes. But why destroy the city when a spy could easily destroy hammers?

And why is nobody building thrusters? Alpha Centuri awaits!

I think it's pronounced Wah-oh or said fast wow man killah.

Japan was saved in the early 1300s by the Mongols when a random event. Typhoon wiped out 10 od there galleys with 20 units in them.:D

Ionian Revolt + 1st Persian War + 2nd Persian War: I didn't really feel like doing the Peloponnesian war.

The Persian empire captured the Ionian cities but the low culture level from resistance meant they culture flipped back to Greek. Athens had a lot of negative relation points against the Persians for repeatedly turning down their demands and was also Friendly with the Ionians, so it naturally DOWed. Together they razed Sardis, but the Persian Immortals had superior movement scores (+2 versus the Phalanx's +1) and so were able to surprise attack them on the way back. Ionia was forced to capitulate to the Persians.

Sparta and Athens were unwilling to capitulate and so Persia DOWed against them. A few Greek cities were alternately razed and captured, but the Athenians took advantage of the lack of stack defenders in the Persian army and slaughtered them at Marathon.

The Persians DOWed a second time. Their invasion of Greece was hampered at a 1 tile wide pass between mountains by Sparta, who had loaded a mod that turned off stacks (Sparta usually played Civilization 5 and so was more familiar with non stack attack). Spartan units had a lot of promotions, and it seemed like the Persians were doomed. Thankfully, Xerxes was able to map trade with Ephialtes and discovered a way around just as Sparta realized that his mod was on and unloaded it. Persians were delighted to find they could use stacks again, and spammed immortals on Spartan axemen.

The Persians razed Athens, which was suspiciously left defended by a single archer. The Peloponesian borders had lots and lots of troops fortifying, and so the defensive bonus was such that the Persians couldn't risk an invasion. Therefore, the only option left was sea battle to destroy the the Greeks' strong navy (they got an early start due to an oracle gambit and a tech lead via Representation). Some Greek ships waited in the open and then lured the Persians to Greek SoDs. The Greeks sunk the Persian troops and won the war.

Great explanation!

Let me add to your great explanation, Owfin: The reason the Greeks had so few troops to combat the Persians is because they spent all of their time building the Pyramids to adopt Universal Suffrage. In fact, the Pyramids played a large role in western history. The Romans had to take over Greece to adopt Representation. Years before, the Greeks built the Oracle, free-tecked Philosophy, founded Taoism(which was spread to the east by Isabella), and advanced to the middle ages( which was, contrary to popular belief, a time of great knowledge). By 323 B.C., Alexander had conquered Persia and Egypt. Sadly, the most of the Greek Empire's cities revolted back to their original motherlands after Alexander's death.

egypt just built the pyramids for the culture and engineer points, since they weren't interested in switching out of hereditary rule

The United States switched from Slavery to Empancipation in 1866...but then their stability fell during Reconstruction, so they switched to Caste System. Finally, with the happiness penalty too high and Great Prophet Martin Luther King, Jr. being born, President Kennedy switched back to Emancipation.

And now for the Peloponnesian war!

Persia had neglected other aspects of its empire during the Second Persian War, and so it retreated and recouped its losses. However, just to be sure that they wouldn't be a problem later, many Greek civilizations vassalized to Athens (which had high rankings in the power scores at this time) and signed a defensive pact, forming the Delian League. The Peloponnesians, however, WFYBTA'd them, refused open borders, and said that "We're doing fine on our own".

Sparta got the unfortunate random event "Helot revolt", which forced them to switch out of the slavery civic.

The Athenian empire, rapidly rising in power due to frequently demanding gold from its vassals, expanded too close for comfort for the Peloponnesians ("Our close borders spark tensions"). Athens DOWed on some Spartan allies and captured their cities. Sparta, however, started sending pillaging stacks Athen's way, and so Pericles hastily agreed to a peace treaty and made all of his units retreat to the city tile.

The Spartans pillaging all the food in the area meant that not only did it crash Pericles's SE, it also meant that Athen's high :yuck: score from population far exceeded food produced. The combination resulted in the devastating Athenian Plague. Pericles did the best he could to salvage the situation; he started building a water economy and made the city work all of the water tiles. He was able to build a lighthouse but the lost hammers from the pillaging resulted in the Great Lighthouse being built much later by the Macedonian Empire. Still, Athens was able to keep itself afloat.

The peace treaty ended, and there were some inconclusive skirmishes here and there that alternated between Delian and Peloponnesians sliding up and down the power graph.

A friendly distant civilization called Segesta asked for the Athenians to declare war against their enemy Syracuse. They accepted, knowing that area (Sicily) had a lot of resources that would help Athens. They got a Great General, Alcibiades, but when he got to Sicily with his troops, the random event "Accusations of religious crimes" appeared. The options were:

a. Yes, Alcibades shouldn't be allowed to run this anymore! (Lose 1 great general, Sparta gains great spy)
b. No, we need him to carry out this expedition. (-3 :) in Athens)

Athens could not afford to lose any more happiness, so they chose A. Without the great general, the expedition was a humiliating failure. The loss of Athenian power made Athenian vassals threaten to cancel their agreement with Athens. However, Athens revealed a stack of 100 ships that it had saved for dire need, and the rebellion was quieted. Athens also switched civics from Representation to Oligarchy, which had the bonus of bringing back Alcibiades as a Great General. This prevented Athens from being wiped out.

Sparta finally ended the war by blocading Athenian trade routes, forcing them to briefly capitulate to Sparta. They ended the vassal agreement after 10 turns, but remained peaceful.

You mean the Romans?

I suppose you are aware that Greece has a little bit of financial trouble, right?

England cheats, because how could they get a woody 2 longbow in Agincourt?

If France already researched Nationalism, where did Napoleon get Mamluk mercenaries? I thought mercenaries are already disabled when he rose to power.

That sub seems to have ended its turn on an undefended fort.

his newly conquered vassals were gifting him camel archers in exchange for GPT.

1. The Americans were winning the Vietnam war, but the War Weariness was too much for them to set the research slider down due to the space and arms race with the Soviets.

3.The Soviets wanted to pursue a domination victory by invading Japan, but Japan became America's vassal after getting nuked by them.

21.12.2012:
the Maya (aka Mexiko), suffered a time defeat, along with all the other civs ingame.

Time score win goes to China, but no one else won any victory condition.
(the intial city spam paid off, despite the mid game technology problems, luckily no other civs took advantage of that, maybe because the many trade treaties China made)

Russia and USA tried for Space, but they launched to early without any of the essential modules like stasis, cold fusion engine, etc etc.

USA also tried for diplomatic with UN, but too many civs hate them.

Russia tried for domination under rule of Stalin by warring and vassaling, but they instead bankrupted their economy and even lost all their vassals.

The Vatican, and Arabs both tried for religious, but none of them spread the religion enough.

Rome and Greece tried for culture from the start of the game, but Greece was captured by Rome, and eventually Rome messed up badly at end of ancient era, didn't build enough praets, and got invaded by stacks of swordsman, chairots and horsearchers from more aggressive Europe players.

Rome tried going for domination too, and Caesor thought he got it and send a bug report to the dev, but apparantly he didnt even have the calendar and didnt center hiw world map, so was unaware of just how small land percentage he has.

for unknown reason, whomever is playing the game, keep pushing "just one more turn" button, although no further score or VC will be recorded.

I suggest for the current players to try posting in the strategy forum for tips on next game, also Sitting bull should prioritize gunpowder and rifling more, if he doesnt want to get eliminated in midgame again.
