Pericles was awoken from his sleep the night it happened, a frantic messanger came bursting in, trying to frantically explain what had happened. Pericles jolted up,
"This had better be important, or I could execute you in an instant."
"SIR! Avaris, it's-it's-"
"Out with it man!"
"Broken off from the Empire." At first Pericles gave the messanger a look, as if he were telling some sort of lie, but this indeed was no lie at all. The city had broken off to form its own nation. Pericles said nothing and merely sat back in is bed, had the worst happened? Was the Empire collapsing? He couldn't be sure, only time would tell.
And yet, no sooner had Avaris broken off, that its Sister city joined the Greeks. Niwt Rst broke free from Avaris control, wishing to rather be with Greece, than with another city of its own flesh and blood it seemed. It was renamed Diospolis Megale, and assimilated in, but at the same time, the new state of Avaris held much control over the lands.
Pericles quickly Mobilized a force to take Avaris, forces were moved from Buto to take Avaris back. The Attack was successful, but as luck would have it, the mobilization was not. Babarians quickly stuck the defortified Buto and razed the city to the ground. Pericles now had to make a choice, would he lose Avaris or Diospolis Megale? There were only enough troops to defend one city, and at the flip of a coin it seemed, Pericles chose Diospolis. The Avarian rebels should be burnt with their city.
But this was not the only problem, Horse Archers, in a move that could only be defined as Divine Intervention, took Babylon. Somehow against all odds taking out the well trained Archer corp garrisoned within.
The other poiwerful cities of the Empire now saw this as their chance, and in Greece's showing of weakness, split from the Empire. Only Tyre remained loyal to Athens. When Pericles heard the news, he collapsed, and tears streamed down his face,
"I only have two...
Only Two...
TWO CITIES! How could this happen?" He held his hands into the air, "How, in just a few years, could this empire slip through my fingers like grains of sand? ALLAH! Why have you forsaken me!" But the Heavens gave him no answer. Pericles knew that there was only one thing left that he could do. He had to rebuild.
The moment was right, a Plague was spreading through the Middle East at the moment, and the cities were mostly defenseless. Pericles mobilized his only Phalanx left in Tyre to assault Babylon. The Barbarians had no defenses due to the sickness, and the City was helpless. It had no choice but to rejoin the empire.
It was then that Mozart, a Great Artist who had been living in Tyre for some time now, came to the City. Like Michaelangelo before him, Mozart reminded Babylon just why it was a wonderous thing to be Greek. Thanks to him, the Empire was saved from Cultural Domination, and Babylon flourished once more under Graecan command.
It was around 1200 when a Vizer of the Empire came to him.
"Pericles! Your Empire has collapsed, and we fear for your safety! A people in the Far East have offered you shelter, if you in exchange leave Greece behind and lead THEM. We implore that you go so that you may live. Missionaries and Phalanxes shall escort you safetly."
Pericles gave a piercing stare at the Knave who suggested this.
"Are you that cowardly that you would leave the Greek Caliphate merely to save your own hide? You dog! I have ruled this Empire for 2000 Years now, and I shall see to it that I continue to rule this Empire until the day of my death, when the enemy is inside these walls. If you wish to go to the Barbarians in the east, then so be it, but I shall stand the test of the times and stay in Athens until the final day of this nation. Now Begone!"
