Hi everyone,
Just finished my first king game by achieving a Diplomatic Victory in 2029 (!!!)
Played as Pocatello, marathon, continents, 12 civs and 20 CS. The beginning was very hard, I actually didn't manage to beat the AI's science advantage until the late industrial era. England and China were in my continent and I only managed to meet the other players when Portugal had already proved the world was round, so I lost the 1st World Congress leadership.
Elizabeth was spawning too close to my 3 cities by the beginning of renaissance. I didn't want to fight later, when she would have longbowmen and ships of the line, so I declared war, wiped her off the map and got a warmongering reputation with China, who didn't waste the chance to denounce me until the end of the game. This made trading very hard and my happiness suffered until I could adopt and Ideology (luckily for me, I was the first, got order because of the happiness tenants and managed to make it the dominant ideology later).
Even with my 3 own cities, London annexed and a few puppets, I still couldn't surpass the science gap, alternating between 3rd and 2nd in science and points until I decided to go all the way through patronage, getting the science bonuses from allies CS on the way. It was hard to compete with the multimillionaires for CS favors (Arabia, Morocco and Portugal). At a certain point, the first 2 destroyed Portugal, which was the only "friendly" civilization. But then I got the world congress and being allied to most of the CS helped me to make my religion and ideology dominant. Then I wiped off China, just because I wanted to.
In general, the game was much more challenging than on Prince and I think I was lucky to win on my first attempt. The AI plays better on this level and doesn't do stupid things like DOWing CS. Shaka did, once on one of my allies, but made peace when I offered him a single luxury. They also work better towards a cultural victory. By the point the game ended, 3 of the 5 remaining civilizations needed influence on 2 others to win. ALL the antiquity sites were excavated and even though I rush to produce archeologists as soon as I can, I still had some artifact slots to fill in my museums.
Anyway, it was a fun game... wondering which leader should I chose next. Casimir was fun on Prince, I enjoy it a lot. Thanks for reading and any suggestions will be appreciated.
