Playing a game on the Mediterranean map on prince with raging barbs.... And it's not going so well for the poor AI. Not sure if its the map (which has a ridiculous amount of empty space), but the Shoshone, my closest neighbor, is still sitting at one city, surrounded by barbs and stolen settlers. The AI also seems uninterested in goody huts. Something seems very wrong. Some unknown AI is building wonders
, so I hope to find an actual civ somewhere, but I wanted to know if anyone else had run into this level of AI incompetence. Is it the map?

Nah the AI will sometimes have a brainfart and think settlers don't need escort from barbarians. And then fail to prioritize clearing out the barbarian encampments.

I concur on this finding. Having raging barb setting really slows down the ai expansion and wonder spamming. On island map at emperor difficulty, the ai always beat me on most of the wonders. On a continent map, the ai is less inclined to forward expand to my area if there is a barb camp next to my border. Also, I can afford to build some wonders without worrying about failure.

Do folks remember Barb cities? I forget which version of Civ had it but the Barbarians if left alone long enough would develop cities. I remember playing Terra maps and when you discovered the new continent there would be these little barb cities scattered throughout. Sometimes they could even build wonders if i recall correctly.

Sometimes an AI would spawn all alone on a continent with these barbs and the poor AI faction would be hanging on to their little corner of the world while barb cities spread everywhere. I don't recall if I have ever seen a AI Civ go extinct due to the barbarians but that would not surprise me considering how bad the AI seems to handle them. In BNW I have had my scout go through some territories where all the AI's improvements are burning and barbs are marching around unopposed. My armies usually end up being the barb exterminators in whatever continent I end up spawning in.

An update: I'm using this game just to test out really wide empires, because part if the problem has to be this map: I've settled around 20 cities so far without ever fighting an AI, and there is still lots of room. Purposefully building no wonders, and it's Siam that's grabbing most of them. Mostly shocked that the Shoshone are the really broken civ, with one city alone on a big empty plain. I think I've rescued his settlers thirty times.
