What to automate and what not to?

When I was a new player, I used to automate scouts but I was missing a lot. Really you should automate nothing.

You don't get more gold out of merchant specialists during golden age and yes manual control of specialists is enough to not spawn stuff you don't want.

Thanks so much Acken! I will start manually managing my specialists now.

I hate giving up anything that's free (if I play Tradition, I must always always have four cities). The production trick is real, but it's so few hammers, just does not seem worth the bother.

Well using that trick somewhat forces you to manage citizens. They go hand in hand.
